Seventy-seven-year-oldL. David Kirk lives by theU.S. Marine Corps’ motto,“Once a Marine, always aMarine.”

He served in theMarine Corps from 1956to 1964, completing twotours of duty in theMediterranean, two toursof duty in Okinawa, andserving in Southeast Asiaand California, as well.

“It was the best eightyears I ever spent, becauseit took me from teenagerto man,” said the retiredLutz business man. “I cannever thank the MarineCorps more, for giving methe discipline to make itwhere I am today.”

Even though he com-pleted his service morethan half-century ago, Kirk’s fidelity to theU.S. Marine Corps remains robust.

“Three years ago, two other Marines andmyself, and our wives, we got together andwe thought it would be a good idea if westarted a Marine group in Land O’ Lakes,”Kirk said.

That group, named Marine ForeverVeterans Group LLC, meets on Mondayevenings at the Beef O’ Brady’s in theVillage Lakes Shopping Center, 21539Village Lakes Shopping Center Drive inLand O’ Lakes. The shopping center is onthe north side of State Road 54, slightly eastof U.S. 41.

Kirk now is accepting applications fromthose wishing to join a new Marine CorpsLeague Detachment that likely would meetat the same Beef O’ Brady’s restaurant.

The league is open to active duty, re-serve and honorable discharged veterans ofMarine Corps and Navy FMF Corpsmenand Chaplains who live in Land O’ Lakes,Lutz, Odessa, Wesley Chapel and surround-ing areas.

There’s a need for the new detachmentbecause there isn’t one nearby, Kirk said.

“We’ve got Marines here that travel 15and 20 miles to belong to the League. Thinkhow many more that would join, if theydidn’t have to travel that far. And, there’s alot of Marines that live in this area.”

Besides being more convenient, itwould be less expensive to attend meet-ings in Land O’ Lakes, because it wouldn’ttake as much gas to get to meetings, Kirkadded.

To launch a new charter, the groupneeds at least 20 members that do not be-long to an existing detachment, Kirk said.Once the new detachment is established, existing league members can transfer, headded.

A meeting has been scheduled for June25 at 2 p.m., at Beef ‘O’ Brady’s, in theVillage Lakes Shopping Center, to answerquestions about the proposed new detach-ment, the annual dues, uniforms, meetingdates, mission of the group and so on.

Anyone who would qualify to join andwould like more information is encouragedto attend, said Kirk, past commandant ofthe Angus R. Goss Detachment in Tampa.

The Marine Corps League was foundedin 1923 by World War I hero Major GeneralCommandant John A. Lejeune, and its con-gressional charter was approved by an actof the 75th Congress, which was signedand approved by President Franklin D.Roosevelt on Aug. 4, 1937.

The league’s mission calls for its mem-bers to “join together in camaraderie and

A bouquet of heart-shaped balloons sep-arated and floated skyward into the nightair, carrying messages of love forChristopher Joseph Sanfeliz.

Below, candles burned brightly, heldaloft by more than 400 people who filledthe stands at Ron Allen Field at GaitherHigh.

They had gathered for a candlelight vigilto honor the life of the 24-year-old Sanfeliz, one of 49 people killed during a massshooting on June 12 at Pulse nightclub inOrlando.

“Chris was taken way too soon from theworld,” Stephanie Woychowski, president ofGaither’s Parent Teacher StudentAssociation said during the June 15 vigil.“Remember Chris. Remember love.”

Besides killing 49 people, the lone gun-man armed with an assault rifle, injured 50others before he was killed by law enforce-ment.

The mass shooting, reported as thelargest in the nation’s modern history, tar-geted a club popular among the LGBT(lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender)community.

The Gaither community responded im-mediately, with former classmates, currentstudents and faculty coming together to or-ganize the vigil for Sanfeliz, a member ofthe class of 2010.

“Once a Cowboy, always a Cowboy,” saidTeresa Trumbach, a teacher at Gaither, known as the home of the Cowboys.

Trumbach met Sanfeliz when he was afreshman.

“He was just one of those great guys,”Trumbach said. “I find it impressive that somany of you came back.”

Before filing into the stands, peoplestopped to pick up candles, drop donationsinto a box, or leave photographic memen-tos of Sanfeliz in a memory box.

Friends and family clung tightly to eachother in long hugs. And, they shed tears.

Amid the sorrow, though, they found away to share the joyous times and recalledSanfeliz’ love of life.

They talked about a young man whowas the friend that everyone wanted. He

was loyal, funny and compassionate. He wasalways ready to do whatever it took tomake his friends happy.

He also had his own way of doingthings.

“Chris loved cottage cheese. He lovedDisney. He would walk around the houseand sing Disney songs,” said Ben Mercado.“He loved Selena (the movie).”

Mercado said he and Sanfeliz came out

Guv’na candidateincreasing fundraising effortsBy Kevin [email protected]

Greg Gilbert is new to the area — justlike his competitor in the Lutz Guv’narace.

And just like his rival, Andre Pamplonaof Royal Lanes Bowling, Gilbert was urgedby by Suzin Carr, the Lutz Guv’na ambassa-dor, to jump into the 2016 race.

“She was relentless,” Gilbert said, de-scribing Carr’s encouragement for him toenter the race.

“However, it did sound like a lot of funto do something like this, and to be in-volved in the community a little bit more,”said Gilbert, who took over as the manag-ing owner of Beef O’ Brady’s in Lutz inDecember.

Before moving to Florida, he spent 20-plus years in Michigan working as ageneral manager for both T.G.I. Fridays andRuby Tuesday.

Due to his wide-ranging obligations tohis restaurant, Gilbert admits he has somecatching up to do on the Guv’na campaigntrail.

To try to make up some ground, Gilbertplans to dive headfirst into fundraising ef-forts between now and July 4, the final dayof the annual charity event.

He hopes to organize a car wash be-hind the restaurant, and perhaps hold a

Ryan Paul James’ first brush with famecame at the age of 6, when his name waslisted in The Laker/Lutz News.

“I was playing Little League there, withthe Red Sox. All of the players were men-tioned there in an article,” said James, aformer Land O’ Lakes resident, now an actorand writer who lives in Los Angeles.

Since moving to L.A., he’s performed intwo dozen plays, has written 10 plays and isnow shopping a pilot for a television showhe’s written called “The Comeback Kids.”

The show is about a pair of actors whowere famous as children and are attemptinga comeback, decades later.

While no one has picked up the televi-sion show yet, it has been screened at filmfestivals in such places as Los Angeles,Honolulu, Miami, Switzerland, Australia andLondon.

It also has picked up a number ofawards.

It’s a project James has been working onfor five years. He’s written eight episodes ofthe show and has casted most of them, withdifferent stars who would be making ap-pearances as themselves, or performing arole in the sitcom.

The TV pilot most recently screened onJune 10 at The Chinese Theatre inHollywood.

James said his desire to act began whenhe was a young boy, when his dad was awildlife officer and the family lived on thegrounds of Pine View Middle School in LandO’ Lakes.

“Living in the middle of nowhere andplaying there on the campus of Pine View, Iwould let my imagination go.

“I remember, that, like for a year, theywere building their (Pine View Middle) gym.I don’t think I can get in trouble for this any-more — but I would go in there and play

Indiana Jones,” James said.“I would watch probably too much tele-

vision,” he added. His acting debut came in 1994 when he

played the role of a Mousekateer on theMickey Mouse Club, filmed in Orlando. Hisacting teacher, who was the show’s castingdirector, got him the gig, he said.

He knew from the beginning the rolewould be a short run.

“When I was brought on, they’d alreadyannounced that the show was cancelled,”James said.

He replaced a cast member who wantedto go to Los Angeles to pursue a music ca-reer.

James moved to Los Angeles in 1995 toattend the American Academy of DramaticArts.

But, that didn’t last long, either.“I was so homesick, and I hated L.A. —

could not stand it,” he said. So, he returned to the Tampa Bay area,

where he became a disc jockey on 100.7Kiss FM.

“I wasn’t really looking to get into radio, but it just happened for me. I bouncedaround to a couple of other radio stations. Aradio station out here in Los Angeles heardone of my air checks, and they called me upand wanted to see if I would be interestedin coming out here,” he said.

He wasn’t sure what he wanted to do.So, he prayed about it.“I was like, ‘God, you’ve got to give me a

sign here’,” James said.He knew he couldn’t afford to move to

L.A., but within a month of his prayer, hehad booked two national commercials andhad received the offer from the radio sta-tion.

“And, so I thought, ‘I’ll give L.A. one moreshot.’

“Here I am, 12 years later, married, with akid,” James said.

Some days don’t go exactly as planned.Just ask Danielle Bunin. The Land O’ Lakes’ resident was in line

on April 30 waiting for the procession tostart for her commencement ceremony atSaint Leo University.

While waiting, Bunin —six months preg-nant at the time — stepped away from thecrowd to get some fresh air. She passed out, fell down and landed on her stomach.

After an ambulance ride and four hoursin an emergency room, Bunin heard thegood news that her baby would be fine. But,she had missed a graduation that meant somuch to her and her family.

She had expected to receive her seconddegree from the university that day — amaster’s in business administration inhuman resource management.

“She was really looking forward to mak-ing that walk,” said her husband, BradleyBunin. “She was so upset that she didn’tmake it.”

It turns out that the staff at Saint Leowanted to make things right.

On June 6, Bunin received her degree ata commencement ceremony held just forher at Saint Leo’s main campus, off StateRoad 52 in St. Leo.

She received her degree from William

Lennox, the university’s president.Family members looked on, with pride.Bradley Bunin’s brother, Matthew Bunin,

flew in from Las Vegas to attend the ceremo-ny.

“It’s inspiring to see what she has accom-plished,” her brother-in-law said.

Danielle Bunin and Lennox stood in capsand gowns outside the president’s office, framed under an archway.

After receiving her degree, Bunin re-sponded with gratitude.

“Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. It’s in-credible that you were able to make thishappen,” she said.

Lennox said personally bestowing thedegree to her meant something special.

“We know how much work goes intothis. It’s important to do this,” he said.

Saint Leo has nearly 16,000 undergradu-

ates and graduates who enroll in coursework at more than 40 locations in sevenstates, and online from anywhere.

Lennox said the university reaches out inparticular to students who are in mid-careerseeking to expand their possibilities.

“That takes an awful lot of work fromthe family,” he said.

Danielle Bunin gave credit to her hus-band.

She works at home as a social mediamarketer. Bradley Bunin is a salesman withan IT company.

She often spent nights doing courseworkand taking tests that had to be finished with-in specific deadlines.

Her husband would free up her time andwatch after the couple’s 2-year-old son,Ashton.

“It was a team effort,” she said.Danielle Bunin and her family might also

qualify as “Team Saint Leo.”Bradley Bunin is a Saint Leo graduate. His wife received her bachelor of arts de-

gree two years ago when she was thenpregnant with Ashton. At that ceremony,Danielle Bunin’s mother, Lorene Mervis, alsoreceived her bachelor of arts degree in soci-ology.

The next order of business is awaitingthe arrival of the newest Bunin – a secondson.

The baby is due in August.

Walt Disney — is a voiceover artist.Though not a household name like her

cousin, she has attracted her own share offame.

She narrated the trailer for the actionmovie, “Gone in 60 Seconds,” — widelycredited as one of the first major movie trail-ers to employ a female voice, according toThe Hollywood Reporter. She also hasvoiced The Academy Awards, The Emmy’sand the Billboard Music Awards.

While James and his wife work in the in-dustry, their 4-year-old son, Ryder, gets achance to dip into the lifestyle, too. He al-ready has met such international stars as

Madonna, Harrison Ford and James EarlJones.

Although the Land O’ Lakes native haslived in L.A., for a dozen years, he still getshomesick and travels back to the area tovisit family a couple of times a year.

Every time he comes home, he mustmake one stop before returning to L.A.

He drops by Larry’s Deli, on Land O’Lakes Boulevard, where he loads up onCuban sandwiches to take back toCalifornia.

The mere mention of them, James saidduring a recent telephone interview, makeshis mouth water.

Only weeks have passed sincethe awful news thatemerged from MeadowPointe, but ensuing events in

Orlando make it seem like a lifetime. Somuch atrocity packed into so little time. Wehadn’t even crossed the solstice, and alreadyit was the summer of sorrow.

But for many in our community, it beganhere, with the dark bathroom, the blockeddoor, the oozing blood, and the pure, inex-pugnable horror beyond.

And after that, the revelations and theconjecture, the grief and the fury. TovonnaHolton murmured she “owed them.” Butsurely she didn’t owe them this, the ulti-mate self-sacrifice. Surely not this. The life ofa 15-year-old, so vibrant and full of possibili-ty, in exchange — if the early narrativeproves out — for cruel, brainless shaming?

It is too late for Tovonna, whose photo-graphs reveal her beauty and outward joy,but fail to detect her brittle vulnerabilities. But, if there are young people in yourhousehold, or your neighborhood, or inyour greater village where you work, play, worship, attend school or volunteer, now —yes, literally, now (tonight might be too late)— is the time to tell them: There is nothingso awful in your life that we cannot sort itout together.

I’m talking to adults, of course, but notjust to adults. This is on teens and ‘tweens,

too. This next is for them.Guys, you know, oftentimes better than

parents or the other adults in your lives, when your friends are aching, when theythink they’ve been done wrong.

Nobody expects you to fix the hurt. But,you can be the key to helping make surethe hurt doesn’t explode. You can be theone who gives permission to seeking thegrownup who can defuse the bomb tickinginside your friend.

Your elementary school training aboutstumbling upon mislaid weapons applies.Whether it’s an abandoned gun or yourfriend’s crisis, it’s not your duty to pick it upand carry it around. Instead, you providesupport by getting help. And that help be-gins by gently introducing a responsibleadult.

Sometimes it’s mom and/or dad.Sometimes it’s a pastor or a teacher or acounselor or a coach or a club sponsor or

the principal. Maybe it’s one of the momswho’s always working the concessionstand, even if her kids don’t run in your cir-cles. Maybe it’s the neighbor with theslightly disheveled yard, or the manager atyour favorite night spot.

The thing about grownups is, they’veusually learned knowing all the answers isless important than knowing whom to askwhen they’re stumped. And they — we —would much rather play the role of guidethan mourner. We’d rather bring relief thancasseroles and flowers.

What allegedly happened to TovonnaHolton — a surreptitious video of her show-ering, or bathing — posted on the internet, was unspeakable. If the claims survivescrutiny, then every step in the process vio-lated Tovonna’s most precious rights: theright to innocence, the right to privacy, theright not to be exploited, the right not to besubjected to ridicule.

At the time this is being written, aspokesman for the Pasco Sheriff’s Office re-ports the agency is close to wrapping up itsinvestigation. If the allegations are con-firmed, it is difficult to imagine apunishment sufficient for those who con-spired to propel Tovonna over the brink.

But, even if the source of ultimate trou-ble lay elsewhere, the shaming video exists.Did no one stop to think: “What’s the worstthat can happen?” And its necessary follow-up: “Can I live with that?” These are alwaysgood questions to weigh, in every phase oflife, but never more so than when whatyou’re plotting holds the potential to scarsomeone for life.

For life? Yes. The internet is forever. Ifshe’d somehow found the courage andcounseling to survive her tortured momenton the cliff overlooking oblivion, she’d havehad to figure out how to get along knowingthe footage was out there, always lurking.

“Explain this video,” says the college gate-keeper. “You want to tell me what was goingon here?” says the personnel director be-tween her and her dream job. “How did youwind up naked on YouTube?” asks the manwho was almost Tovonna’s fiancé. And onand on and on.

And yet, we would surrender all that isgood and reassuring about our species if weimagined even such an unforgivable prankcouldn’t have been surmounted.

In the wake of the slaughter in the night-club popular with Orlando’s LGBTcommunity, people set aside their politicsand upbringings to overwhelm bloodbanks. And, there’s movement on how tokeep firearms away from smoldering bad ac-tors tentatively identified by lawenforcement.

Because these are things we can do. So iswrapping an arm around a troubled teenand saying, right now, “I am here. You areloved. Things will get better.”

Tom Jackson, a resident of New Tampa,is interested in your ideas. To reach him, email [email protected].

W ith hurricane seasonopening June 1, hereare some steps to help

keep your family safe.Plan Ahead – Ensure your fami-

ly’s safety by creating a disasterpreparedness plan in advance ofhurricane season. This includes as-sembling a disaster survival kit andplanning your emergency evacua-tion routes.

Secure Your Property – When ahurricane warning is given, closewindow shutters and attach protec-tive panels with previously installedfasteners. Videos on how to quicklyand safely board up your home canbe found at FLASH.org, the websitefor the Federal Alliance for SafeHomes.

Get to Safety – If you have not al-ready evacuated inland, and there isno time to get to an emergency shel-ter, stay in the middle of your home, away from windows and glass doors.

Take cover under a staircase or aheavy piece of furniture. Do not stayin a manufactured home becausethey are easily overturned in highwinds and pierced by flying objects.

Be Sure Your Home Is ProperlyInsured – Think of homeowner’s in-surance as financial protection forwhat the future may bring. Withoutan adequate policy, you will have tocover home repairs out of your ownpocket.

Homeowner insurance coversyour house, your possessions andprovides financial protection againstlawsuits.

“We’re here to help you preparefor the worst, by writing a policythat gives you the most protectionand resources after the storm,” saidJo-z Wilder, a State Farm agent inLutz. “I’ve sold insurance for over30 years, and invite you to call todiscuss your needs and concerns.”

A+ Realtor Specializing in Pasco

TALK toTERRI

T erri Dusek stands apartfrom other Realtors be-cause she works with

clients every step of the way —from the very first contact throughthe close of the sale.

By design, she does not work aspart of a team, or have staff answer-ing phone calls and emails. Instead, she personally handles every ques-tion, and takes care of all the followup and details involved with buyingor selling a home.

“I’ve learned that clients preferworking with one person — the onethey met with originally — instead ofbeing passed off to others,” saidTerri. “I am always the point of con-tact and purposely limit the numberof people I work with at one time. This allows me to focus 100 percenton my customers, and always beavailable when they call.”

That one-on-one philosophy hasworked very well for Terri, who hasbeen a successful Realtor for 15years, and for the hundreds of cus-tomers she has helped sell or buy ahome.

Here’s just a sampling of the manypositive reviews Terri has earned.

“Terri is on top of her game. She isstraightforward, knowledgeable andhelpful. She worked very hard for usand made selling our home veryeasy.”— Todd & Cindy Caroline

“Before Mrs. Dusek, I had threeother Realtors. None got close to the

service provided by Terri. I am veryhappy with the transaction. A+Realtor. Very knowledgeable, verydedicated to her clients and honest.”— Mr. & Mrs. Moya

While Terri works with buyers andsellers throughout Tampa Bay, shefocuses on the Pasco market, espe-cially Trinity, Wesley Chapel, Lutzand Land O’ Lakes, which has beenher home for 30 years.

Terri’s love for Lutz/Land O’Lakeshas led her to become very engagedin the community. She is the 2016-17president of the Central PascoChamber of Commerce and an ac-tive Rotarian, chairing a satelliteRotary Club in Land O’ Lakes.

Terri’s interest in real estate goesback to her childhood in London, Ky,where her father was a developerand her mother sold the homes herfather built.

“I loved being around the con-struction sites, playing in the sand, helping to nail studs in place and lay-ing brick,” recalls Terri. “It was onlynatural that I became a Realtor.”

Terri is a Realtor for RE/MAXPremier Group in Wesley Chapel. Her expertise is in the areas of newconstruction, re-sales, luxury prop-erty, land and investment property.

As the warm-season vegetable gardenseason draws to a close in Central Florida, there’s still much work to be done in prepa-ration for the next planting season. This is agreat time to collect heirloom seeds, whichcan save money and provide an easily re-newable source of your favorite plantvarieties.

An heirloom variety is an older cultivarmaintained in relatively isolated regions, even one’s own backyard.

Heirlooms aren’t used for wide-scaleagriculture production any longer, but theyare often quite resistant to pests and weath-er extremes.

Heirloom plants harbor lots of genetic di-versity, which means they are unlikely toyield consistent colors, size and even flavor, but that doesn’t mean they cannot be fla-vorful, pretty and highly prized in the homegarden. More importantly, heirloom varietiescan be nurtured, selected, preserved andhanded down from one family member tothe next for many generations leaving a linkto past heritages.

The goal with heirloom preservation isto ensure all of the cultivar’s genes are trans-mitted from each generation to the nextleaving us with a large gene pool – and lotsof variation.

The basics of saving heirloom seedsstarts with nurturing every plant into matu-rity, except for any diseased plants or onesyielding fruit or veggies we don’t like.

We then harvest the fruit, clean the seedsof flesh, dry the seeds, then store the seedsin the hope of germinating those same culti-vars the next season or years down theroad.

Beans, cowpeas, even tomatoes and pep-pers make excellent plants for seedpreservation. A few considerations: Hybridplants will not provide seeds bearing thesame qualities as the plant from which theycame – seedlings from these plants willhave some, but not all, of the qualities of theparent plant.

If you are interested in saving seeds, besure to grow enough plants to get a largeseed batch and avoid inbreeding. For corn, you need 100 ears, and for tomatoes, adozen plants to get enough quality seed tostore.

Also, be sure to allow the fruit to matureon the plant before harvesting; be selectivewhen you harvest. Choose only the best ofthe fruits from the plants which you favor

for specific traits. Seeds that collapse whenthey’ve been dried are not viable. Throwthem away. For example, squash, cucumberand melon seeds should be hard and plumpwhen dry, not shriveled.

When you have harvested the seeds, besure to immediately clean and dry them. Fortomatoes, rinse the seeds and wipe themwith a rough towel to remove the gel-likefleshy coat which prevents germination. Formost any other plant, remove the flesh fromthe seeds as best you can, then lay them outon newspaper to dry. Any moldy seedsshould be discarded. Even a food dehydratorcan be useful in drying seeds. But, a warm, sunny spot for a few days will do just fine.

Once the seeds are dry (usually hard, butnot brittle), place them in well-marked en-velopes (cultivar, date, traits), wrap theenvelope in aluminum foil, place them in asealed plastic storage bag and store them ina refrigerator.

Place small amount of seeds in each en-velope just to ensure a bad batch doesn’truin the whole bunch.

Before planting stored seeds for the nextseason, bring them up to room temperaturein a closed container on the counter for twodays. This will help prevent thermal shock.

Planting seeds in the garden can be greatfun and provide quality time with family.Preserving seeds for the next season andyears to come can serve as a time capsule ofgenerations past. Consider saving your heir-loom seeds — and, at the same time, save apiece of your heritage.

Whitney C. Elmore is the UF/IFAS PascoCounty Extension director and UrbanHorticulture agent.

Heirloom seeds preserve heritage, save moneyNATURE NOTES

WHITNEY C. ELMORE/PHOTOCollecting heirloom seeds from the vegeta-bles you grow in your garden can savemoney. Heirloom seeds can also be passedfrom one generation to another, giving you achance to save seeds and a piece of yourheritage at the same time.

Recreational vehicles and RV parks dotthe landscape of rural thoroughfares sur-rounding Dade City.

But, just north of the historic downtowndistrict, a very uncommon RV park is beingplanned. This project, an upscale RV gatedcommunity with amenities more oftenfound in pricey single-family home subdivi-sions, is moving toward development.

Hill Country Estates is at 17151 U.S. 301,atop one of Dade City’s rolling hills.

“It’s a pretty unusual project,” said JackBuckley, real estate solutions provider withExit Realty in Land O’ Lakes.

The site has 37 ready-to-build one-acrelots.

Construction on the first site is anticipat-ed within 45 days.

A standard feature will be a pull-throughRV garage. Buyers will have several floorplan options ranging from about 1,200square feet up to a more customized 5,000square feet.

There will be one-bedroom, one-bath;two-bedroom, two- bath; and three-bedroomand two-bath houses.

Amenities can include an observation

deck atop the garage, a pool house, gardenand courtyard. The base price will be about$505,000. There also would be fees for ahomeowner’s association.

“We like to think these would be a sec-ond residence,” said Buckley. Though forsome, he said it could be a third or fourthhome.

Interest in the homes has been high,Buckley said, with more than 90 inquiries.Developers hope to acquire an additional 98acres from an adjacent golf course in orderto build another 80 homes, he said.

The initial goal is to sell at least half of theexisting lots, and then expand, Buckleyadded.

The project’s location is centrally locatedwith easy access to Interstate 75, and trips toTampa International Airport and downtown.

But, Buckley said there also is plenty hap-pening now and in the future in Dade City.Potential projects could include a new golfcourse and a boutique hotel, he said.

The Publix grocery store that opened inlate 2015 at the corner of U.S. 301 andClinton Avenue is also a plus. It’s a shortdrive from Hill Country Estates.

“That’s a big feature for us, because yearsago where would people go to do theirshopping?” Buckley said.

“I’m new to this area, so I have to findsome avenues to make some of this hap-pen,” said Gilbert, who lives in Spring Hill.

Though he considers himself to be“quite a shy guy,” he enjoyed participatingin the whimsical Lutz Guv’na debate lastmonth at the Old Lutz School.

There, he showed the ability to step outof his comfort zone during the question-and-answer portion of the debate, wherehe offered some clever responses to someof the “hot-button issues” pertaining toLutz residents.

For example, during the light-heartedbanter, Gilbert proposed to have “allCanadians stopped in Land O’ Lakes” as asolution to prevent snowbirds from inhab-iting Lutz.

It’s also where he revealed his cam-paign slogan: “Beef it up at Brady’s.”

“I was pretty apprehensive going intoit, but I had a lot of fun doing that,” Gilbertsaid about the tongue-in-cheek debate.

When he’s not working or dedicatingtime to fundraising efforts, the Guv’na can-

didate has a passion for brainteasers — hedescribes himself as a “crossword andSudoku junkie.”

Despite his busy schedule, and no mat-ter the outcome of this year’s Guv’na race,Gilbert has no qualms about becoming acandidate all over again.

“I’d be more than happy to try this nextyear, where I’ll be able to put a lot moreinto it,” he said.

The Guv’na race continues through theFourth of July weekend.

The winner will be announced after thecommunity’s traditional parade.

The next honorary mayor will receivethe coveted “sash” from last year’s winner,Jennifer Rankin, who raised more than$9,200 in the 2015 race.

The annual charity event— which start-ed in 1991— is sponsored by the LutzCivic Association, and benefits about 20local causes, including the Boy Scouts andGirl Scouts, the Old Lutz School and theFriends of the Library.

The winner of the Guv’na race may alsoearmark 10 percent of what they raise tothe organization of their choice.

Colin Eke was fed up with playing soc-cer.

The 60-year-old was tired of the nagginginjuries and the over-aggressiveness of“younger lads” he regularly played against.

After undergoing several operations —including Achilles and knee surgeries, plus ahip replacement — Eke decided about fouryears ago that it was best to stop playing thegame he still loves.

“I hung my boots up,” said Eke, a nativeof Ipswich, England. “I was really wearingmyself out.”

After a few idle years, Eke is planning toplay the sport again, albeit in a fashion that’smore accommodating to his age, and hisknees.

As the league director of the New APSL(Adult Premier Soccer League) in NewTampa and Dade City, Eke is forming anOver 50s Walking Soccer League that beginsplay on July 3. Games will be played eachweek on the fields of Benito Middle School,10101 Cross Creek Blvd., in Tampa. An intro-ductory practice session will be held onJune 26.

Described as “the fastest growing sportin the United Kingdom,” walking soccer iscompletely non-contact.

Many of the rules are different than tradi-tional soccer.

For instance, there’s no running or jump-ing, no off-sides, no throw-ins, no enteringpenalty areas and no slide tackling.

As opposed to 11 versus 11, each walk-ing soccer squad can only have six playerson the field at any given time.

Considering the reduced numbers, thefield (50 by 25 meters) and goalposts arealso smaller than conventional soccer.

The sport (walking soccer) is growingvery quickly, and I thought this could be agood chance to try something locally inTampa,” said Eke, who started organizingvarious New APSL soccer leagues in 2012.

“It tries to avoid injuries that can be causedthrough muscle strain, hamstring problems, back problems, ankle twisting and all thoseother things that happen when you’re overthe age of 50.”

To further reduce the risk of injuries, there’s a penalty box, or “sin bin” for thosethat get hotheaded or try to bend the rules

of the game, which last an hour, consistingof two 30-minute halves.

Eke hopes the variations to the world’smost popular sport will reignite the passionof the game for older players “without hav-ing to go to work on crutches.”

The league director said men andwomen of all skill levels are welcome, andhe fully expects to have some people signup that haven’t played the game in decades.

“We just do it for the fun and enjoymentof it,” he said. “That’s purely what the gameis all about — some people are playing intheir 90s in the U.K., which is quite incredi-ble.”

Eke hopes to have at least four teams inplace by June 26, with an eventual goal of12 teams. To reach that mark, registrationwill remain open throughout the nine-weekseason for additional teams and individualplayers.

“If we get one person who loves it, he orshe will tell their friends — that’s howwe’ve grown to now,” he said.

In addition to a little competition and ex-ercise for middle-aged and older folks, Ekesaid walking soccer will also serve as abridge to meet others.

“It’s a lot of fun for us to meet new peo-ple and introduce it to so many that haven’tplayed the game for a long time,” he said.“They play together and make friends; it’s asocial event where everyone shows up, andhas a laugh and a joke, and goes home hope-fully uninjured ready to play another game.”

Individuals can register for $45. A team(nine players) can register $400.

For more information on the league, visitNewAPSL.com, or call Colin Eke at (813)610-2278.

They wanted to support their son, JuanObando Jr., who is part of the WesleyChapel Cadet Squadron, and they wantedto express their patriotism.

“We are American citizens,” JuanObando said. “We are supporting Americaat this time,” he added, referring to the massshootings in Orlando.

“It is so sad,” his wife, Monica said. The event also attracted a number of

dignitaries, including Pasco CountyCommissioner Ted Schrader and state Reps.Danny Burgess and Shawn Harrison. BobHatfield was there, too, representing U.S.Rep. Gus Bilirakis.

Eric Johnson, of Wesley Chapel Toyota, sang “The Star-Spangled Banner,” with a fewmembers of the audience reverently join-ing in.

When adding the flagpole to the region-al mall, Lenners said “we were methodicalin looking for the location.

“We wanted something that was frontand center,” he said. “This is certainly frontand center.”

By B.C. [email protected]

Initially billed as a celebration to un-veil a new 40-foot flagpole at TheShops at Wiregrass, the event took on

a more somber tone in light of the massshootings in Orlando.

At the beginning of the Flag Day cere-mony, Greg Lenners, the general managerfor The Shops at Wiregrass, asked for a mo-ment of silence.

That moment lasted 49 seconds. Each second symbolized the loss of a

life on June 12 at Pulse nightclub inOrlando.

In asking for sign of respect, Lennersalso asked those gathered to honor thosewho were injured, as well as their familiesand the community of Orlando.

Following Lenners’ remarks, PascoCounty Commissioner Mike Moore sharedsome history about Flag Day, noting that itwas officially established by a proclamationby President Woodrow Wilson on May 30,1916.

President Harry Truman signed an Act ofCongress on Aug. 3, 1949 declaring June 14as National Flag Day.

Moore invited those gathered to reflectupon the meaning of the American flag.

“Think to yourself: What does this flagmean to me?” Moore said. “In your heart, right now, what does it mean to you?” heasked.

“Who gave up their lives to keep thatflag flying?” he asked.

Moore said when he thinks about theflag, he thinks about such things as free-dom, family, veterans and pride.

The Wesley Chapel Cadet Squadron ofthe Civil Air Patrol handled the duties ofpresenting the colors and hoisting the flag.

Immediately after raising the 8-by-12-foot flag to the top of the pole, squadronmembers lowered it to half-staff, in honorof the Orlando shooting victims.

Those attending the event said theycame to demonstrate their patriotism andcelebrate what the American flag repre-sents.

Teresa Fegan came sporting a blousedecked out with stars.

“I feel like we’re free in this country,” the73-year-old Fegan said, explaining why shewanted to attend. “It’s wonderful to be apart of this country. I am so sorry for whathappened in Orlando,” she added.

Her 80-year-old husband, Pete, said heposts a flag at his home on all of the na-tion’s patriotic holidays.

Fifty-year-old Juan Obando and his 42-year-old wife, Monica, came to theceremony for two reasons.

Shops at Wiregrass debuts flagpole on Flag Day

With precise movements, members of the Wesley Chapel Cadet Squadron of the Civil AirPatrol lend an air of solemnity to the inaugural flag raising at The Shops at Wiregrass onJune 14, which is Flag Day. From left, cadets Cassie Ramer, 15, of Spring Hill, and FranciscoPulgarin, 16, of Wesley Chapel, are among the members of the squadron who presented theflag to hoist on the new 40-foot flag pole.

FRED BELLET/PHOTOSGabriel Quinn, a cadet with the Wesley Chapel Cadet Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol, and others, salute, while Eric Johnson sings ‘The Star-Spangled Banner.’

Wesley Chapel Cadet Squadron cadets Jennifer Zartman, 13, and Sydney Jung, 15, work atthe squadron’s information table.

The American flag flies at The Shops atWiregrass, after a Flag Day ceremony at theregional shopping mall.

The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office mounted posse was on hand at the June 14 Flag Day ceremony, to celebrate the installation of a 40-foot flagpole at The Shops at Wiregrass.

Unfurling the 8-by-12 American flag, mem-bers of the Wesley Chapel Cadet Squadronof the Civil Air Patrol prepare to raise theflag during a Flag Day ceremony at TheShops at Wiregrass. Cadets, from left,Andrew Alayon, 16, of Wesley Chapel;Cassie Ramer, 15, of Spring Hill; andFrancisco Pulgarin, 16, and Elicia Smith, 15,both of Wesley Chapel, assist in the regionalmall’s first flag-raising event.
