As a mother with two young children,Miriam Cook wanted to find inexpensive,family friendly things to do. The Land O’Lakes resident would search the Internet forfun places to go, but was frustrated that itwasn’t as easy as it should have been.

“I was watching online and couldn’t real-ly find anything that was what I wanted,with events and stuff like that,” Cook said.“So I thought, I have to create my own.”

Around eight months ago, she did justthat. Now, FamilyFriendlyTampaBay.com is adestination for thousands of users eachweek, highlighting local freebies, cheapmovies and other low-cost activities thateveryone in the family can enjoy.

Cook takes her job as event seeker seri-ously, with specific criteria in mind whenshe’s looking for places to go. She’s lookingfor places that appeal to all family members,so children of all ages can have fun. Alcoholcan’t be the focus of the event, she said, andaccommodations like restroom facilities areimportant.

Price matters, too, of course.Cook uses her own family as a template.

She has two sisters with children who are inthe education field, and she wants to high-light events that families like theirs can afford.

Home BancShares Inc., the parent com-pany of Centennial Bank, and FloridaBusiness BancGroup Inc., parent companyof Bay Cities Bank, are merging.

Home BancShares will acquire FBBI for$101.6 million, an amount that is the secondlargest paid for a Florida bank since 2007.The bank in the past three years has alsobought Heritage Bank of Florida in Lutz, andFlorida Traditions Bank in Dade City.

A closing date on the purchase will be inOctober.

“I think it is a good thing for our share-holders,” said Gregory Bryant, Bay Cities’president and chief executive officer.

It’s a grassy tract with trees now, but lux-ury homes are slated for construction onmore than 9 acres on Carson Drive, east ofU.S. 41 in Land O’ Lakes.

Tampa homebuilder Timothy Mobley ofMobley Homes wants to build the Manorson Lake Padgett, a gated enclave of eighthomes on waterfront lots.

The project is in early stages, with plansto file for approvals with Pasco County, like-ly by the end of summer, said ReneeRiordan, sales agent with Mobley Homes.

“They are beautiful lake frontage,” saidRiordan. “You can’t always find sites likethis.”

The lots are priced at about $200,000each. The website for Mobley Homes,MobleyHousing.com, pegs home prices as

starting in the upper $500,000 range.Mobley Homes would have several designplans available for houses of about 3,000square feet, according to the website.

Riordan said Mobley Homes is fieldinginquiries from prospective homebuyers.

The site is located across from theCountryside Montessori Academy onCarson Drive. The road is north of the inter-section of State Road 54 and U.S. 41, alsoknown as Land O’ Lakes Boulevard. It dead-ends behind the Village Lakes ShoppingCenter.

Carson Drive is a two-lane roadway anda frequent cut-through for motorists whowant to avoid the busy intersection at StateRoad 54 and U.S. 41.

Pasco County records list the taxablevalue of the property as about $852,000.Mobley is a partner in BCL Florida LLC,which owns the property.

Lutz resident John Straumann was playingtennis several months ago and was trying tokeep statistics on how his shots were goingduring a match.

It wasn't going well."One of the biggest things was trying to

track unforced errors versus winners, and Iwas trying to do it in my head. It was impossi-ble," said Straumann, who was then living inWashington. "I started thinking, well, this newApple Watch is coming out. I wonder if Icould do something so I could track the stuffmyself."

Like many people, Straumann thought hehad come up with a pretty good idea for amobile device application. But unlike the vastmajority of those people, he actually designedthe app, tested it and brought it to market.

Straumann graduated from the Universityof South Florida with a degree in computerscience and engineering, and works in soft-ware sales, so it might sound like designingan app would be easy for Straumann.

After all, he'd been doing it for years.There was just one problem: All his experi-

ence was with the Microsoft Windowsplatform. Apple's operating system is differ-ent, and he didn't own an Apple computer oran iPhone. He didn't even own the watchthat was supposed to be the platform for hisnew app.

So, he invested about $5,000 in the cur-rent technology and taught himself the insand outs of Apple hardware and software.

He spent a couple of hours in theevenings after work and got up early onSaturday mornings to write and test the appbefore his family woke up.

During the same time frame, the familyalso was moving from Washington to Lutz.

It may sound like a lot of sacrifice and ef-fort but, for Straumann, it was a form ofchallenging fun.

"It was almost more interesting to me be-cause it was new. It was learning somethingnew, taking on a new project, a new technol-ogy," he said.

In less than two months, he had an appready to go.

Wearing an iWatch, a tennis player canrecord his or her statistics during a match.With a couple of swipes after each point,players can record what type of shots theyhit and how they fared. If there's an un-forced error, the player can log it was aforehand, backhand or serve return, for ex-ample. For winners, slices, drop shots, lobsand other types of shots can be recorded in-stantly and analyzed later.

Designing an app is one thing, but mak-ing it useful is another. And Straumannwanted to make sure it would work as wellon the court as it did on his computer.

"The biggest things were ease of inputand connectivity," he said.

Because the iWatch has to be in constantcommunication with a companion iPhonefor the app to work, he had to make sure theconnection would be strong from variousdistances on a tennis court. And he didn'twant recording each shot to interfere withthe natural flow of a game. Once a playerlearns how to use the app, recording statis-tics should take about a second, he said.

Once he had a useful app, he obtained adeveloper program membership and sent itto Apple for their testing and review. If theyapprove it, it's ready to go. But if there's aproblem, Straumann said they don't offermuch insight into what's wrong.

He had to wait a couple of weeks to getthe verdict.

Apple responded with the green light. Soit was ready for market, right?

Not quite. It turns out that Straumannwas a harsher critic than Apple itself.

"I wasn't happy with what I had done, soI rejected it myself and then submitted itagain," he said. After a couple more tweaks,and a little more back and forth, both sideswere happy, and he felt good about what hehad produced.

The app has only been out for a matter ofweeks, but Straumann is happy with the re-sponse he's seen so far. At $1.99 (with noads), Apple gets about 25 percent of the ten-nis app revenue, allowing Straumann to seea little monetary compensation for his ef-forts as well.

And the ScoreIt! app family has alreadygrown. A golf app for the iWatch is designed

to help players keep score on their watchesand input data based on the particularcourse they're playing. An update to the ten-nis app also lets players use it to keep scoreif they'd prefer to do that instead. Anotherfeature allows a parent or coach to track ten-nis stats via a non-watch device while theplayer is on the court.

The new app business is a family affairfor the Straumanns. The website introducesdaughters Alex (marketing and social media)and Avery (gameplay consultant), as well aswife Patti (graphics) as important team part-ners.

And while he considers designing appsfor Apple devices to be a fun project (he'snow a fan of their products), Straumann saidthe tennis app has real-world uses for peo-ple looking to improve their game.

By analyzing the statistics, trends will de-velop that show what areas are strengths fora player and what areas need more work inpractice, he said.

"I think if they really use it, they can lookat things they can improve," he said.

Tariq Zidan ponied up more than $1,000and was named the honorary Mayor of LandO’ Lakes.

He didn’t win the title through a shadydeal in a smoke-filled room or making bribesto fix an election.

Zidan won the honorary title fair andsquare.

He raised the most money during thecampaign which ran from early March untillate June. The funds go to the Central PascoChamber of Commerce, and the mayor's sashwent to Zidan.

"It feels fantastic," said Zidan. "This wasmy first shot at fundraising, so I'm not aheavy-hitter. But I'm very satisfied with myfirst efforts on my way to becoming a heavy-hitter with fundraising."

Zidan succeeded in his first fundraising ef-fort by putting together a trio of successfulevents at area venues: A Bunco game night atCopperstone Executive Suites, a trivia nightat Stage Left and a karaoke night at City Grill.Together, they raised the amount that earnedhim the win. He credits April Saland andElisabeth Butterfield with making the Buncoand karaoke events successful.

Zidan, who runs Zidan Marketing &Media, an online marketing and web designcompany, was honored with the title at thechamber's awards and installation banqueton June 26. It was also a celebration of theorganization's 40th anniversary, and includedthe installation ceremony for the chamber’snew officers.

As the new mayor, Zidan can look forwardto ceremonial events such as ribbon cuttingsand other appearances.

Zidan also gets to direct some of themoney he raised to the charity of his choice.He chose the Bubba The Love SpongeFoundation, which was founded by the pop-ular radio personality. The charity assists thesurviving family members of fallen officersand first responders.

For Zidan, it's a chance to help familieswho have lost loved ones serving the com-munity.

"It's what makes our country great," hesaid. "We've got to pay it forward to the peo-ple who make it all possible."

Zidan joined the Central Pasco Chamberlast October. The Lutz resident has been amember for just a small part of the cham-ber's 40 years, but said it's already done a lotfor him.

"It has presented the opportunities to cre-

ate some great relationships and foster thoserelationships on a business and personallevel," he said.

One of those relationships is the reasonhe's the mayor today. The now former mayor,Terri Dusek, convinced Zidan that he'd be agood replacement for her when her termended. Now that he's the mayor, Zidan saidhe'll be active in finding more people to runfor the office.

Each mayor is different, and Zidan wastedno time in putting his own stamp on the of-fice. He's already updated the traditional sashby adding a large clock to it. It's a tribute torapper Flavor Flav, who is known for wearingclocks at appearances and concerts. Zidanbelieves the accessory gives the sash a need-ed bit of flash.

"I figured I'd give it an untraditional spark.Bling it out a little bit," he said.

While the mayor title doesn't come withany real responsibilities or tangible duties,Zidan said the benefit of having the race isvery real for the chamber and its goals.

"It creates attention and gets people inter-ested, which is always a good thing," Zidansaid. "I think that chambers that don't do itare missing out on an opportunity for an or-ganic degree of exposure that they can onlybenefit from, and the Central Pasco Chamberhas done that,” Zidan said.

Land O’ Lakes’ honorary mayor begins his term

KeriCure Inc., a Wesley Chapel company,has secured a patent that is expected toopen new doors for partnerships with phar-maceutical and medical device companies.

“Our foundation of the company was ac-tually built around this nanoparticle drugdelivery technology that I helped to create atthe University of South Florida,” said KerriannGreenhalgh, who operates the companyfrom her Wesley Chapel home.

The company, which launched in 2011,has been offering consumer products to helppromote the healing of cuts and wounds onpeople and pets, through liquid bandagessprayed on the skin.

The polymer retains its elasticity, protect-ing the wound and allowing the cut to heal.

The products for people are sold underthe names Natural Seal Liquid Bandage,Natural Seal and Natural Seal on the Go, andare available at Publix, Kroger, PriceChoppers, Marsh and Meijer, and in naturalproduct stores throughout the United States.

The pet products are known as ToughSeal for Pets and Champion Seal, and areavailable online and at some feed stores.

The company also has a professional lineof liquid bandage products, under the nameof KeriCure’s Advanced Seal — Rx forMedical Use. That formulation is used byphysicians in various cosmetic, dermatologi-cal, burn, wound care and post-surgicalapplications.

With a patent granted in June, Greenhalghexpects her unique polymer to be used in amuch broader array of applications.

The patent “gives us the opportunity totalk to larger pharmaceutical companies —who have products, drugs, bioactives thatthey want to deliver topically — and tellthem we have a great, FDA-cleared system inplace now, and that we can incorporate theirdrug into and provide very sustained releasewith our product,” Greenhalgh explained.

“One area that we’re looking at is in theanti-cancer area,” she said.

“We would incorporate a very well-known anti-cancer drug into our polymersystem,” she said. Or, her product could beused to apply radiation seeds topically.

Patients could benefit from her compa-ny’s product, she said.

“The beauty of this is that they wouldn’thave to be getting exposed to massiveamounts of radiation. It would be extremely

targeted,” she said. “So, you would get rid of alot of the side effects that happen with radia-tion.

“That is a very serious opportunity,” shesaid.

KeriCure is currently talking to variouscompanies that have an interest in its tech-nology, Greenhalgh said, including 3M. “Theyhave a couple of projects that they’re inter-ested in having us collaborate on.”

Greenhalgh said she launched the compa-ny as a consumer products companybecause it was the smoothest way to raiserevenue.

“We really want to grow in the biotechspace and create products for advancedwound care, like chronic wounds and burnwounds,” Greenhalgh said. “We’re actually intalks with a couple of large wound care com-panies, as a private label. We do have a veryinteresting opportunity in front of us rightnow.”

“We’ve just been asked to go to CVS andpresent to its private label group of buyers,so they’re interested in bringing the producton as a CVS product,” she said.

“We just got picked up by CardinalHealth. They’re the largest medical productdistributor in the U.S.,” she said, adding hercompany will be attending Cardinal Health’strade show in Las Vegas this month.

It also is presenting at Winn-Dixie’s localbuyer division this week.

Greenhalgh grew up in New Tampa andgraduated from Wharton High School beforeobtaining her bachelor’s degree and doctor-ate from USF.

“Beginning in October,2015, the liability onfraudulent transactionsswitches to the issuingbank instead of the mer-chant, so long as the mer-chant is able to processcredit cards that have thenew chip technology,”

explains Terry Inman, President and CEO ofVecter Technologies, LLC. “The new chip tech-nology is known in the industry as EMV (EuropayMasterCard Visa) which is a technical standardfor smart payment cards.”

“However, businesses that are unable toprocess smart cards will continue to be liable forfraudulent transactions,” Terry explains.

In order to benefit from this importantchange, Vecter Technologies is updating its cur-rent customer base, while also helping new mer-chants, by providing compliant credit card pro-cessing equipment needed to process EMV trans-actions.

“Vecter loans EMV capable equipment toqualifying merchants at no cost,” says Terry.“Vecter never leases equipment to its customers,as equipment is constantly changing to meet pro-cessing demands. In many cases, merchants arestuck in a lease where the equipment they areusing is no longer a viable solution. Lease optionscan be a costly investment to the merchant.”

Terry goes on to say, “We encourage business-es to upgrade their equipment which will allowthem to accept EMV, near communications, andswipe transactions now, and not wait until theliability shift in October.”

EMV cards, or smart cards, which have beenin use for years in Canada and Europe, have asmall computer embedded in them which signifi-cantly reduces credit card fraud.

“These smart cards help with fraud preventionand will not be usable if a thief attempts to skim

the card numbers, which is unfortunately some-thing that can happen with magnetic stripe cardstoday,” Terry stated. “Even though Pay at thePump stations and ATM locations are prevalentto these type of fraudulent transactions, the FraudLiability shift for these services will not go intoeffect until October, 2017. The reason for thedelay is due to the significant equipment invest-ment and the limited number of certified instal-lation technicians across the country.”

“The liability shift gives issuing banks a realincentive to provide customers with EMV creditcards,” Terry said, “even though they are moreexpensive to manufacture than traditional mag-netic stripe cards commonly used today.”

“This means smart cards will quickly becomethe standard card used by most consumers. It’sessential that businesses update their processingequipment so they are ready to accept smart cardtransactions,” Terry noted.

In addition to providing credit card processingservices, Vecter Technologies has a proprietarypoint of sale system (POS) called TotalCommerce. It also offers an industry specificPOS system for cigar merchants called FuegoTotal Commerce, and a software applicationspecifically designed for private schools calledTotal Campus, in order to provide a cashlessenvironment. In addition to having their ownfrontend gateway, they are also certified on mostPoint of Sale software solutions including tabletsystems such as BreadCrumb, iConnect, andShopKeep.

Vecter Technologies, with sales offices in 22states, differs from its competitors as its salesagents earn a portion of the residual revenueinstead of an up-front commission. “This createsa personal relationship between the agent andthe merchant. It also provides a real incentivefor the agent to assist in resolving any merchantrelated issues that may arise,” said Terry.

Buck Rollings is passionate aboutmaking trees healthy and safe, and hiscrew at Omega Tree Service shares hiscommitment.

Buck is the owner of Omega TreeService, a commercial tree trimmingcompany that has been in business forover 30 years. Buck bought the businessthree years ago when he retired from theU.S. Marines Corps after 20 years ofservice.

Buck was already a certified arborist(having owned orchards in Texas),before buying Omega. With the businesscame key crewmembers who had beenwith Omega for many years.

“The crew that came with Omega hasbeen invaluable, because they are keep-ing alive the craftsmanship of tree trim-ming by training our younger employ-ees,” said Buck.

Buck explains that tree trimming isan art that is dying — a skill that can’tbe found in books.

“It’s something you learn by doing,”Buck explains. “There’s a huge differ-ence between having the knowledge ofhow a tree should look, and then actual-ly being able to trim a tree safely andaccurately.”

Once you understand how treesshould be trimmed, it’s troubling whenyou see trees that are trimmed incorrect-ly, Buck says.

“There’s only one way to trim trees,and that’s the right way,” says Buck.

All of Omega’s crewmembers are cer-tified, and all participate in ongoingtraining with other arborists in the area,as well as enrolling in programs taught

by the University of South Florida.Because felling trees and trimming

massive tree limbs can be extremelydangerous, Omega’s employees aretrained to avoid accidents and knowhow to leave a tree so it’s safe for cus-tomers.

“Trimming trees improperly doesn’tjust make them less appealing visually,but it can actually make them very dan-gerous to homeowners. That is why weput so much time into training andmaking sure our work is done correctly,”said Buck.

Another priority of Buck and his staffis prolonging the longevity of their cus-tomers’ trees.

“We are very passionate about find-ing ways to preserve trees, instead ofdoing major work just for the money,”he said.

With Omega’s extensive experienceand equipment, it primarily focuses onlarger tree trimming jobs. Buck and hiscrew do a lot of work in Lutz and LandO’ Lakes because there are so manymature, older trees in this area.

The Florida Department of Healthwants to remind everyone to remain vig-ilant of severe weather.

“This summer, as you enjoy Florida'sgreat outdoors, stay ahead of severeweather by knowing the forecast andhaving a plan to get indoors," said StateSurgeon General and Secretary of HealthDr. John Armstrong, in a news release “Beprepared for any weather change, ex-pected or otherwise.”

In order to ensure all enjoy the outdoorssafely, it is important to understand the dan-gers of lightning and follow a safety plan incase of inclement weather. For the past 30years, lightning ranks just behind tornadoesand flooding in weather-related deaths, thenews release says.

“Florida averages more lightning strikesper square mile than any other state, andour abundance of outdoor recreational op-portunities makes lightning a very seriousconcern,” said Florida Division ofEmergency Management Director Bryan W.Koon. “Our Kids Get A Plan campaign is oneof the tools we use to address lightning safe-ty. Cook brings her own review committeewith her when she attends events. If daugh-ters Jasmine, 5, and Hazel, 3, want to go backto a destination, Cook knows she has a win-ner. And on weekends, husband Ben joins inas well.

Still, it takes work to keep a popular web-site running and current with the latesthappenings. She spends time each day re-searching deals in the area, and her emailinbox is full of messages from different busi-

nesses and public relations companies. She fil-ters through the offerings and compiles the listshe thinks represents the best of Tampa Bay.

The site isn’t a moneymaker yet, butCook can see it growing into a business inthe future. She’s already planning expan-sions into other markets such as Orlandoand Miami.

But for now she’s working toward build-ing the site’s popularity and gaining thetrust of local families. And the positive feed-back she’s received from friends and peopleat her church is an indication that she’s onthe right track.

“My focus has really just been trying toget the word out that my website’s here tohelp people out,” Cook said.

Cook also wants those families who visitthe site to attend and support as manyevents as possible, which will encouragecompanies to take note of the demand forevents that go easy on a budget and every-one can enjoy.

“If we go and participate in these events,then they’re more likely to cater to familiesand make sure that their events or their lo-cation is more family friendly,” Cook said.

Richard Abbattistaknows about rare wines.And he knows when tomake the kind of wineoffer no one would wantto refuse, least of all moviedirector and wine mag-nate Francis Ford Coppola.

Abbattista is retiredfrom a 40-year career inthe New Jersey wine in-dustry. He worked forhundreds of wineriesaround the world includ-ing Coppola’s winery inNapa Valley, California.

Along the way,Abbattista won a bottle of1973 Inglenook EstateCharbono in a sales incen-tive program in the 1980s.It is still unopened.

So when he read in“Wine Spectator” thatFrancis and EleanorCoppola bought the histor-ical Inglenook wine estate in 1975,Abbattista knew he wanted to send hisprized wine to the director.

The California winery dates back to thelate 1870s.

The bottle of wine was a thank you,Abbattista said, for Coppola’s great movies,such as “The Godfather” trilogy, but also formaking great wines. As an industry insider,he felt pretty sure Coppola didn’t have this

particular estate bottled wine.He left a voice message and exchanged

emails with Lorraine Gaudet, office managerfor The Family Coppola: Wine, Food, Resortsand Adventure. Gaudet responded thatCoppola would indeed be happy to acceptAbbattista’s “very generous offer.”

She sent a wine-shipping box with a pre-paid label and, on July 7, Abbattista sent hisgift on its way to Coppola in California.

Hillsborough County is opening its firstdesignated cricket fields at Evans Park, 1104N. Kingsway Road in Seffner. The park in-cludes three cricket fields, two lightedbatting cages, lights for night matches, cov-ered bleachers and LED scoreboard.

As a champion gymnast and pole-vaulter, Nikki Carroll relies on hersuperior balance. But when shefound out that she won the AmateurAthletic Union High School SullivanAward, she became uncharacteristi-cally shaky on her feet.

“I was just so shocked. I couldn’teven believe what she was saying,”Carroll recalled about the phone callconfirming she won the award. “Ihad to hold onto the table that wasnext to me. I almost fell on the floor.”

While the AAU hands out the awardto four male and four female athletesaround the country, just one of eachwins the top prize of $10,000 in schol-arship money. Carroll, who lives inLand O’ Lakes, beat out hundreds ofapplicants around the country to takethe top female athlete prize.

Her athletic accomplishments areimpressive – she’s a two-time highschool state pole vaulting champion,and she took the top all-around posi-tion for gymnastics at the AAU JuniorOlympic Games.

But, it takes more than physicalskill to win the top Sullivan prize. Inaddition to participating in at leastone AAU sport, athletes are also

judged on academics, leadership andcharacter, and had to prepare essayresponses on the application.

In those areas, Carroll also com-pared favorably to her peers. Shemaintained a 3.7 grade point averagein high school, coached younger ath-letes over the summer andvolunteered at Feeding AmericaTampa Bay, where she sorted foodand distributed it to the needy.

She won’t win any medals by vol-unteering, but Carroll said the resultis rewarding just the same.

“It’s such a great feeling, beingable to help other people,” she said.

Helping young athletes learn newskills was particularly rewarding,Carroll said. Perhaps that’s becauseshe used to be one of those youngathletes herself. She’s been doinggymnastics since she was around 5years old, and her dedication to twosports has required much of her lim-ited free time. At Tampa CatholicHigh School, Carroll spent severalhours a day after school on gymnas-tics, whether it was beam, bars, flooror vault work. Weekends meant atrip to Merritt Island to practice polevaulting at Pole Vault City.

And that doesn’t count the out-of-state traveling. As an AAUparticipant, Carroll travels to places

like Iowa and New York to competein gymnastics and pole vaultingevents. She’s been to the Big Appleseveral times just this year, she said.

She has enjoyed competingagainst athletes from different states.

She also has had the chance tomeet coaches, too, who have provid-ed valuable advice and critiques onher form. She’s even planning to at-tend a camp run by a coach she metat a competition.

Now that she’s graduated highschool, Carroll’s schedule will change.

But it won’t get easier.She’ll miss gymnastics, but pole

vaulting will become a priority, sinceit earned her a full scholarship to theUniversity of South Florida.

Her academic studies will focuson integrative biology in pursuit of acareer in either trauma medicine orforensics.

And the $10,000 in scholarshipmoney won’t hurt, either.

While the monetary prize andthe state champion accolades arenice, Carroll is most proud of notjust being named a Sullivan winner,but in taking the top female spot outof all eligible high school athletes.

“This is on a whole other levelthan everything else that I’ve done,”Carroll said.

Summertime can be an especially riskytime for poisoning accidents with pets.

The American Society for the Preventionof Cruelty to Animals’ Poison Control Centeroffers these tips to help keep your pets safe:

• Don’t leave alcoholic beverages withinreach of your pets. Alcoholic beverages havethe potential to poison pets. If ingested, theanimal could become very intoxicated andweak, severely depressed or could go into acoma. In severe cases, your pet could diefrom respiratory failure.

• Don’t apply sunscreen or insect repel-lent on your pet that is not labeledspecifically for use on animals. Ingestion ofsunscreen products can result in drooling,vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst andlethargy. The misuse of insect repellent thatcontains DEET can lead to neurologicalproblems.

• Always keep matches and lighter fluidaway from your pets. Certain types ofmatches contain chlorates, which coulddamage blood cells and result in difficultybreathing—or, in severe cases, kidney dis-ease. Lighter fluid can irritate skin, and, ifingested, can produce gastrointestinal irrita-tion and central nervous system depression.If lighter fluid is inhaled, aspiration pneumo-nia and breathing problems could develop.

• Don’t put glow jewelry on your pets,or allow them to play with it. While the lu-minescent substance contained in theseproducts is not highly toxic, excessive drool-ing and gastrointestinal irritation could stillresult from ingestions, and intestinal block-

age could occur from swallowing largepieces of the plastic containers.

• Keep citronella candles, insect coilsand oil products away from your pets.Ingestions can produce stomach irritationand possibly even central nervous systemdepression. If inhaled, the oils could causeaspiration pneumonia in pets.

• Be sure to keep your pets on their nor-mal diet. Any change, even for one meal, cangive your pets severe indigestion and diar-rhea. This is especially true for older animalsthat have more delicate digestive systemsand nutritional requirements.

It’s also important to keep in mind thatfoods such as onions, chocolate, coffee, avo-cado, grapes, raisins, salt and yeast dough allcan be potentially toxic to companion ani-mals.

The American Kennel Club also offersthese tips to keep your pets safe duringsummer.

• Avoid scraps from the grill. Whiletempting to our pets, any sudden change toyour pets' diet can cause stomach upset.

• Avoid feeding your pets fatty and richfoods such as hamburgers, hotdogs, chickenand baby back ribs. They can lead to indiges-tion, upset stomach, diarrhea and ultimatelypancreatitis.

• Don’t give your pet raw meat or fish,because they contain bacteria or parasitesthat are extremely dangerous to our petsand can be fatal.

• Don’t give your pets discarded bonesfrom ribs, steak or chicken because they cancause an obstruction or lacerations of yourpet’s digestive system.
