The idealized version of the holidays in-volves festive gatherings, enjoyable mealsand touching exchanges of special gifts.

In reality, though, many people are com-pletely stressed out by calendars that havetoo many events and activities to attend, toomuch food everywhere and too much pres-sure to choose the perfect gift.

And because of those expectations, self-imposed or otherwise, instead of being aspecial time, the holidays can become verystressful.

There are strategies, though, to help con-trol holiday stress by simplifying holidaytraditions, controlling overindulgence andlearning some emotional freedom tech-niques.

A trio of women recently gave a talk onthose topics at the Jimmie B Keel Regional

Library, 2902 W. Bearss Ave.The talk was presented by Senior

Information Resources, an organization thatis aimed at “Helping baby boomers and be-yond live well in our community.”

Barb M. Mahlmeister, a registered dieti-tian and nutritionist from Carrollwood,offered strategies for navigating through theholidays, without the weight gain that oftenaccompanies the season.

Brenda Cassato, executive director ofSenior Information Resources, offered prac-tical suggestions for reducing the stress thatoften comes with trying to find the perfectholiday presents.

And, Sandra Miniere, a personal lifecoach based in Wesley Chapel, demonstrat-ed emotional freedom techniques – whichinvolve tapping specific energy points inthe body to gain rapid relief from emotionaland physical disturbances.

Senior Information Resources is an or-

ganization with about three dozen mem-bers, coming from Pasco, Pinellas andHillsborough counties.

Mahlmeister gave the audience numer-ous practical suggestions for enjoyingholiday foods, but reducing impacts that lastwell beyond the season.

Many people view the holidays as beingthe time between Thanksgiving and NewYear’s Day, Mahlmeister said. In reality,though, “the holidays start when kids getdressed up for Halloween.”

And, she said, they don’t end until thesecond week of January.

During that time, she said, people arebusier and tend to exercise less. At the sametime, they tend to indulge at all sorts of gath-erings.

So, she offered pointers to help reducethe impacts.

Lake Park, a popular park in Lutz, hasbeen closed until further notice because of asinkhole.

At this time, the sinkhole is 6 feet acrossand approximately 90 feet deep, according toMichelle Van Dyke, a spokeswoman forHillsborough County.

The county has closed the park, at 17302N. Dale Mabry Highway, in an abundance ofcaution to protect public safety, Van Dykesaid.

The county hired a geotechnical firm toconduct soil borings after floodwaters reced-ed about four weeks ago, revealing adepression on one of the main roads in thepark, according to Van Dyke.

When Pine View Middle School puts on aconcert, there’s a good chance that some ofthe instruments it’s using are on loan fromother schools.

And, when students want to practice athome, they often have to take turns check-ing out the instruments.

In one way, it’s a good problem: More stu-dents are enrolling in the school’s musicprogram.

In another, it’s not so good. Students don’talways have access to instruments, losingtime they could use to improve their skills.

Amarilys Barbosa, who teaches band andchorus, and Sue Castellano, a devoted grand-

parent volunteer, are on a quest to drum upcommunity support for the band.

There are different ways the communitycan help, they said.

One way would be for people who haveinstruments they are no longer using to do-nate them to the school’s band program.

People who took band or music lessonsyears ago may have instruments they nolonger use, Barbosa said.

There are professional musicians, too,who may be able to part with some of theinstruments they used when they were juststarting out, she said.

Instruments of all types are welcome, theband director said. “They’ll certainly go to agood home.”

While happy to accept any donated in-strument, the band’s greatest needs are fortubas and French horns.

During a recent concert at The Center forthe Arts at Wesley Chapel, the school had toborrow a tuba from Wesley Chapel HighSchool, she said. “There are eight tuba play-ers, but only seven tubas.”

There’s a shortage of French horns, too.“My other shortage is French horns. We hadto borrow three from other schools,”Barbosa said.

In some cases, the school has an instru-

ment, but no case, so students can’t borrowthose instruments.

Enrollment gains triggered the increasedneed for instruments.

The enrollment increases are a result ofPine View Middle’s effort to be designated asan IB Middle Years Programme.

“The very, very cool thing about this pro-gram is that now all of the so-called electiveclasses, they are now becoming core class-es,” Barbosa said. “The idea is to expose themto a world-class education.”

Last year, her largest band was 45 stu-dents.

“This year, I’m double that,” she said.There are 240 students enrolled in the

music department, including beginning, in-termediate and advanced band, and chorus.

And, the program will continue to grow.“Within the next couple of years, they’re

track-laying crew stormed after him on ahand car, planning to lynch him.”

The Orange Belt faced many hardships inits early years due to debt run up during var-ious phases of construction.

Frigid temperatures during the GreatFreeze of 1894-1895 killed many citrusgroves in Florida.

The freeze also ended Demens’ owner-ship of the Orange Belt.

Within weeks, he sold the Orange BeltRailway to railroad tycoon Henry B. Plant.

Plant converted most of the railway tostandard gauge (4 feet 8 1⁄2 inches), whichmade it more profitable.

In 1902, the Plant system became part ofthe Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. Passengerswould later ride on that railroad in luxuryPullman railcars with sleeper berths duringFlorida’s land boom in the 1920s.

As cars, buses and planes took more pas-sengers, the Atlantic Coast Linediscontinued its train service in 1970.

The depot in San Antonio was left aban-doned and forgotten until 1976, when agroup of Tampa residents organized underthe name of Robert Most and Associates.They took passengers on a round-trip rail-road excursion, typically a 90-minute trip,from San Antonio to Blanton on weekendsand holidays.

The last ride took place on Feb. 21, 1978.

Sections of the Orange Belt rail line arenow part of the Pinellas Trail in PinellasCounty, the South Lake Minneola ScenicTrail in Lake County and the West OrangeTrail in Orange County.

The depot in San Antonio is a reminderof the vibrant role that railroads played dur-ing the early days of Florida’s development.

The historic depot is the last one remain-ing on the Orange Belt Railway, whichcrossed Pasco County for 80 years, connect-ing northern markets in the St. Johns Riverarea with St. Petersburg.

The depot was completely restored in1996 with a $15,600 preservation grantfrom the state, plus a $25,000 contributionfrom Pasco County and countless hours ofvolunteer help.

With a history that had its roots in poli-tics, the San Antonio depot also has aconnection to political life today.

Besides serving as a railroad museumand community building, it’s a votingprecinct, too.

The history of a train depot building inSan Antonio is rooted in political uncertain-ty in Russia roughly 135 years ago.

On Feb. 17, 1880, a second assassinationattempt on Emperor Alexander II occurredin the imperial dining room of the WinterPalace in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Terrorists blew up the dining room,killing or maiming 67 people – but the em-peror wasn’t present during the attempt onhis life.

The previous year, nitroglycerine wasused in a failed effort to destroy AlexanderII's train. And, there was the unsuccessfulmission to blow up the Kamenny Bridge inSt. Petersburg as the tsar was passing over it.

These events, and the political uncer-tainty that followed them, prompted PiotrAlexandrovitch Dementieff, a Russian no-bleman, to flee to Florida as a Russian exile.

Dementieff, who later shortened hisname to Peter A. Demens, would go on to

become a co-founder of St. Petersburg,Florida.

And, the city would become home tothe southern terminus for one of thelongest narrow gauge railroads in theUnited States at the time of its completionin 1888.

The decision to locate a railway line inSt. Petersburg was made during the sametime that Henry B. Plant was opening up arail line near Port Tampa, which had adepth of 5 feet.

St. Petersburg, by comparison, had a har-bor with a depth of 18 feet, enabling it toimport and export more cargo.

With dozens of railroads competing inFlorida, Demens saw an advantage in run-ning a railroad north from St. Petersburg totransport the area’s abundant long-leaf yel-low pine and its citrus.

Known as the Orange Belt Railway, themainline was 152 miles long.

It was the first to cross central PascoCounty diagonally -- throughTrilby, San Antonio, Ehren,Drexel and Odessa.

The Orange Belt Railwayalso played a role in the devel-opment of other towns alongits route including TarponSprings, Dunedin, Clearwaterand Largo.

As a narrow gauge (3 feet)railway company, Demens hadarranged for some incredible fi-nancing -- which left him indebt with angry capitalists inPhiladelphia.

“At one time, his creditorschained his locomotives to thetracks,” writes Glen Dill for TheSuncoast News in August 1988.“At another time, his unpaid

It’s not something that you would thinkwould happen very often, but surprisinglyenough, it happens more than you wouldthink.

People show up at Pasco County AnimalServices Department ready to adopt a pet,but forget to bring a leash or carrier to takehome their new dog or cat.

And, when they forget the pet supplies, itcan be problematic, said Animal ServicesManager Mike Shumate.

Getting a pit bull from the shelter into aparked car, for instance, can go awry, if thedog decides to bolt, he said.

“We want convenience for our cus-tomers when they walk out the door,”Shumate said.

Pasco County commissioners voted onDec. 1 to allow the agency to sell pet adop-tion supplies and promotional items tosupport the agency’s services, and its animalshelter at 19640 Dogpatch Lane in Land O’Lakes.

Items for sale will include collars, har-nesses, leashes, carriers, crates and trainingitems. The supplies are expected to arrive atthe shelter by January.

People adopted 699 cats and 1,499 dogsfrom the agency in fiscal year 2015.

To help encourage more adoptions, theagency is offering special deals throughDecember. The fee for a dog older thaneight months is $20; for a cat of any age, it’s$10.

All adoption fees include spay/neuter, mi-crochip and vaccines.

In addition to adding adoption supplies,the board also gave the agency permissionto sell promotional products with em-bossed logos including T-shirts, cups, mugs,magnets and bumper stickers.

Those products are already available,Shumate said. The T-shirt in particular is pop-ular, he said.

“We’re not looking at making any profit,”Shumate said. “We’re not in competitionwith local pet stores or veterinarians.”

The sales prices will be scaled to coverpurchasing and handling costs to the coun-ty.

The pet adoption supplies are focusedsolely on providing the transition from shel-ter to new home.

The promotional items will help marketthe agency and its logo, Shumate said.

“It’s something people are going to rec-ognize and know more about,” he said.

The Pasco County School Board has ter-minated its contract with AMIkids Pasco,effective Jan. 29, for services the organiza-tion is providing to 46 students, who comefrom across Pasco County.

While voting to end the contract, theboard made it clear that it will consider rein-stating it, if AMIkids Pasco can demonstratesubstantial improvement in its performanceby Jan. 12.

The board’s action came at the recom-mendation of school district SuperintendentKurt Browning, who informed the boardthere are “some pretty significant issues” thatneed to be addressed.

“The Jan. 12 date is really kind of thedeadline for AMIkids (Pasco) to demonstrateto us that they can turn the ship around andthey can provide the quality of service tothose students,” Browning said.

The program serves 25 therapeutic emo-tional/behavior disability students and 21students in the Department of JuvenileJustice program.

The facility opened this year in a campusof portables on U.S. 41, north of State Road52 at 18950 Michigan Lane in Spring Hill.

If the organization can demonstrate con-siderable progress, Browning said he willrecommend that the board revoke the termi-nation, allowing AMIkids Pasco to carry on.

If the district isn’t satisfied, nothing elsewould need to be done, and the districtwould assume responsibility for the site onJan. 29, Browning said.

The district leader said discontinuing thedistrict’s relationship with AMIkids Pasco isnot the preferable option for him or forPasco County Schools.

But, Browning added: “The bottom line ishow the children that we’re responsible foreducating are being served. That’s first andforemost my priority.”

While hoping the issues can be resolved,Browning said, “there’s a great deal of workto be done.”

He outlined his concerns in a Nov. 30 let-ter to AMIkids Pasco.

O.B. Standee, president of AMIkids, urgedthe board to reject Browning’s recommenda-tion, instead giving the organization time tocorrect deficiencies.

Standee said AMIkids Pasco was given theopportunity because of its track record.

“We help kids that have struggled inschool and in the community, and we helpthem find and develop their potential,” saidStandee, whose organization has workedwith Pasco County Schools since 1993.

“Because of our historic success, theschool district talked to us about expandingour services to not only the alternativeschool kids, but kids with disabilities, requir-ing specialized behavioral and emotionalservices,” he added.

He acknowledged startup issues.He said he was willing to forego a 60-day

cancellation notice — and would put thatin writing — if the board would give him anopportunity to correct the issues.

He voiced concerns about retaining staff,if the board approved Browning’s recom-mendation.

“We don’t want to just meet the needs ofthe district. We have a vision of making thata model program,” he added.

Board member Cynthia Armstrong saidshe knows that AMIkids Pasco has donesome good work.

But, she added: “I was very disappointedwhen I was reading the issues that cameup.”

Board member Steve Luikart said he hasbeen impressed by AMIkids Pasco in thepast.

“I’m a supporter, but I will tell you thatit’s disappointing. I wish you the best ofluck in turning that around.”

Board member Alison Crumbley said thecurrent issues are troubling.

“I was dismayed, extremely upset.

They’re serious insufficiencies,” Crumbleysaid.

She also said that Browning’s recommen-dation offers AMIkids Pasco a chance towork out the problems. “It does give you asecond chance,” she said.

Board Chairwoman Joanne Hurley put itlike this: “There’s a lot in that that you haveto tackle in order to get the board to changeany recommendation. But, I think you can doit, based upon your past history with the dis-trict. I think it’s within your power to fixboth the educational and the financial is-sues, and get back on track.

“I feel it’s necessary as a board to take theaction that we’re taking in the best interestof students, with the idea that it can alwaysbe undone if you demonstrate success,”Hurley said.

Armstrong rejected Standee’s idea of al-lowing to end the contract without notice.

“There’s no way we’re going to come inand lock the doors and say, ‘O.K., you’re out,we’re in.’ That would not be in the best inter-est of the students to have that type oftransition,” Armstrong said.

Martha Henry never dreamed thatKaitlin Babb, a 10-year-old neighbor andplaymate of her daugh-ters, would one day beher business partner.

“When I was growingup in Land O’ Lakes, wedid hair all the time atMartha’s house,” Kaitlinrecalls fondly. “I’ll neverforget the day she mademe a blonde in herkitchen.”

As Martha styled andcolored the hair offriends and family in herLake Padgett home,Kaitlin patientlywatched whateverMartha did, learningenough by the time shewas 12 to begin doinghair for her friends.

Martha’s early men-toring had a lasting impact. After graduat-ing from Land O’ Lakes High, Kaitlinattended Paul Mitchell The School inTampa, graduating from the 10-monthcourse in 2011.

Meanwhile, Martha’s career was takingoff at The Salon at Ulta Wesley Chapel,located in The Grove shopping center.Martha joined Ulta when the salon openedin 2006, and was soon one of its top stylists.

During her eight years at Ulta, Marthafollowed Kaitlin’s progress as she graduatedfrom high school and cosmetology school,and began working as a hair stylist. Twoyears later, with Martha’s encouragementand recommendation, Kaitlin was hired atThe Salon at Ulta.

“It was a bit like working alongside mydaughter, since I’ve known Kaitlin most ofher life,” said Martha, “I was very proud of

what a good stylist she had become.” Last January, Martha decided to open her

Pasco County com-missioners approvedthe hiring choices attheir Dec. 1 meetingin New Port Richey.

Brian Head, a formerchief deputy with thePasco County Sheriff's of-fice, will be assistantcounty administrator forpublic safety and admin-istration. He served 12years with the sheriff'soffice before retiring in2013 with the rank ofcolonel. Most recently, hehas been employed byPasco-Hernando StateCollege at its law en-forcement academy.

In 2011, Head wasone of three finalists forthe top cop job in PascoCounty following the re-tirement of Bob White.Gov. Rick Scott appoint-ed Chris Nocco as the county's sheriff and,soon after, Head was promoted to second-in-command as deputy sheriff. He held thatposition at his retirement in 2013.

He is a graduate of Troy Universitywith a degree in public administration,and also has a bachelor's degree in crimi-nal justice.

Head's start date is Dec. 14 at an annu-al salary of $115,000. He will oversee FireRescue, emergency management and thecounty's new 911 communications cen-ter. He replaces Randy TeBeest who leftseveral weeks ago to move out of state.

"I believe he is exactly the right candi-date to help us put the cherry on top ofthe consolidated communications center,”said Pasco County Administrator MicheleBaker.

Cloyd "Flip" Mellinger will become as-sistant county administrator for utilityservices effective Dec. 9. His start datewill overlap by a few weeks the remain-ing tenure of Bruce Kennedy, who plansto retire at the end of the year.

Mellinger currently is director of utilityservices in Marion County, a position hehas had for about six years. Previously, healso served four years in supervisory posi-tions with the same department.

He served in the U.S. Navy and is a grad-uate of the University of Maryland with abachelor's degree in business administra-tion, and a master's degree in science andenvironmental management.

His annual salary will be $128,000.Kelley Boree will become director of

parks, recreation and natural resources ef-fective Jan. 4. She currently is parks andrecreation director in Jacksonville.

She is a graduate of William WoodsCollege in Fulton, Missouri with a degree inbusiness administration. She has served indirector level positions with the FloridaDepartment of Environmental Protection.

Her annual salary will be $105,000."I look forward to leading an awesome

parks team," said Boree in comments tocommissioners prior to her appointmentto the job.

“The toothpicks are not your friend,” shesaid. Many people eat much more than theyrealize, because they’re munching on foodsthat are presented on toothpicks.

No matter how busy the season is, it’s es-sential to exercise, she added.

Everyone can find a way to fit 15 to 20minutes of exercise into their schedule eachday, she said.

People should view exercise as a form ofbuilding up credits, which are then spent onthe foods you eat. If you want ice creamlater, exercise more now, she said.

Besides giving you more freedom to in-dulge, it makes you more mindful, too, shesaid.

You tend to make more thoughtfulchoices about eating. Instead of automatical-ly picking up a dessert, people will ask: “Do Ireally want to eat that or not?”

And, because they’re more aware of theimpacts, they’ll make choices on how to in-dulge. Do they want a calorie-ladencasserole dish or a slice of pie, she added.

It’s also important to carry food withyou, such as protein bars, nuts and seeds, toavoid getting too hungry, she said.

Before entering a gathering, eat a fat or

protein and drink lots of water, she advised.Portion size is important, too, Mahlmeister

said.Cassato offered suggestions for simplify-

ing gift giving during the holidays.If you know someone living in an assisted

care facility, they might enjoy receiving a hairappointment and lunch, for instance.

Or, perhaps you could create a calendarwith family photos. Birthdays can be markedby photos, too, she said.

Audio books, fleece throws and boxes ofall occasion cards are other ideas, she said.

Of course, she added, “Everybody loves agift card.”

Other ideas include helping an older rela-tive to complete some technical chores, suchas programming their cellphone or settingup social media accounts.

The key is to simplify and to focus on theessentials of spending time with others, andletting go of the stress, Cassato said.

“Our time is valuable. We have to guard itlike gold. But, the time you give away to oth-ers is like an investment,” Cassato said.

While Mahlmeister focused on stayinghealthy through the holidays, and Cassatotalked about simplifying gift giving, Minieretalked about a soothing self-care techniquethat involves the mind and body.

Emotional freedom techniques provide re-lief from emotional and physical disturbance,by combining principles of acupuncture andacupressure to balance energy flow in thebody.

Miniere offered ademonstration, describingthe energy points at vari-ous locations on the bodyand tapping them, tochange the energy flow inthe body.

The technique also in-volves breathing exercisesand the repetition of phras-es, as people tap at variousenergy points.

Over time, people whouse this technique canlearn how to change theflow of energy throughmental tapping, Minieresaid.

The county notified the GFWC Lutz-LandO’ Lakes Woman’s Club about a possible sink-hole, which forced cancellation of the club’sannual arts and crafts festival at the park.

The two-day festival, held in earlyDecember, typically features around 300 ven-dors and attracts about 30,000 people. It’sthe club’s biggest fundraiser of the year, andits cancellation will have a ripple effect onthe various local organizations it supports.

Lake Park is a 589-acre sanctuary for birdsand wildlife. It features five lakes, cypressswamps, pine flatwoods, and hardwood ham-mocks.

It also has an archery range, a BMX bicy-cle track, two equestrian arenas and aradio-controlled car track.

The county closed the park after receiv-ing an engineering report on Dec. 1confirming the presence of a sinkhole.

The immediate area affected looks like adip in the road, but tests indicate a sinkholebeneath the surface. The exact footprint isnot known, Van Dyke said.

Additional fencing has been installed onthe park road leading to the affected area, sheadded.

County staff will be talking with the engi-neering firm and the City of St. Petersburg,which owns the land, to determine what thenext steps will be. The county leases theproperty from the City of St. Petersburg.

County staff is contacting event organiz-ers and groups that use the park, to notifythem the park is closed until further notice.

Any park usage application fees for can-celled events will be refunded.

Beyond meeting basic needs, Barbosawould like to give her band students achance to learn additional instruments.

Uniforms are going to become anotherissue, Barbosa said.

As the band continues to grow, it won’thave enough marching band uniforms —and it’s unlikely they’ll be able to find anythat match because the current uniformsare several years old, she said.

As it is now, Castellano spends countlesshours helping to keep the band lookingsharp. She takes hems out and puts them in.She sews on new buttons, and so forth.

Besides asking for instruments, planningefforts are underway for “Night Under theStars,” a fundraising event that will takeplace on March 12 at the Land O’ LakesCommunity Center.

The event will feature musical perform-ances by Pine View students, but also willinclude outside silent auctions.

Gift baskets — containing items thathave been donated by family, friends andbusinesses — will be auctioned to helpraise money to meet the band’s needs.And, tickets will be sold to the event, al-though the admission price has not yetbeen set.

While the shortage of instruments ischallenging, both Castellano and Barbosaare excited about getting more students in-volved with music.

Sunlake head football coach BillBrowning has one more game on the side-lines this year.

It’s not a playoff game.It doesn’t count in the standings.He’s not even coaching his Seahawks

this time.Still, it’s an important game.“It’s something that a lot of the coaches

have wanted here for years. I’ve been push-ing for it for a long time,” Browning said. “Itwill be the very first one. It’s kind of a bigdeal.”

The big deal is the Pasco County East-West Classic, the county’s first all-starfootball game. The best of the best will gohead-to-head in a contest on Dec. 10 at 7p.m., at Sunlake High School, 3023 SunlakeBlvd., in Land O’ Lakes.

The game, organized by the Fellowshipof Christian Athletes, will have players squar-ing off from opposite sides of the county.

Players on the East team willrepresent Land O’ Lakes, Wiregrass Ranch,Wesley Chapel, Zephyrhills, Pasco, BishopMcLaughlin and Zephyrhills ChristianAcademy.

Players on the West team will representfrom River Ridge, Ridgewood, Mitchell,Anclote, Hudson, Fivay, Gulf and Sunlake.

Sunlake was placed on the West team forcompetitive balance purposes, Browningsaid.

Each team features top athletes whowere selected by the coaching staff.

Browning is coaching the West team,with the other school’s coaches serving as

his assistants. On the East side, the headcoach will be Wiregrass Ranch’s MarkKantor. Each roster of players is made up en-tirely of seniors.

The teams will only have a few practicestogether before the contest, so the gameplans probably won’t be too complex.

The game is valuable to the players be-cause if offers one more chance to impressteams at the next level, Browning said.

“It gives an opportunity for collegecoaches to see them in an all-star gameagainst other very good players,” Browningsaid. “It’s just really a chance for the seniorsto go out, have some fun and showcasetheir talent.”

For the Fellowship of Christian Athletes,there are additional benefits as well. Thegroup has put in about $20,000 to make thegame a reality, and wants area seniors tohave another chance to show off their skills.But, they’ll also get a chance to play with

teammates and coaches they would-n’t have met previously, which allowsthem to foster new relationships andcontacts throughout the county.

“They play on their individualteams all year. Now here’s a chance toplay with the best from otherschools. So there will be bonding,there will be friendships made forlife, hopefully,” said Bob Durham, areadirector for the Fellowship ofChristian athletes.

The game also allows coaches towork more closely together and tostrengthen their bonds as well.Coaches are instrumental to the FCA,and having them work together is apositive experience for everyone in-volved, Durham said.

The plan is to make the game anannual event, with head coaching du-ties and game location possiblyrotating from year to year.

Feedback has been positive fromeveryone involved, Durham said,which isn’t surprising, consideringthe popularity of football in PascoCounty.

“Schools and people and fans lovefootball here, and so this has just beena missing piece of the county in termsof football,” he said. “It fills a void. Thecommunity has been looking for thisfor years, and now it’s finally here.”

Starting the season with a four-gamewinning streak is good. Taking all fourgames against district opponents is evenbetter.

The Zephyrhills Bulldogs boys basketballteam ran its record to 4-0 after an 84-63 vic-tory over Hudson on Dec. 1. Because all four

games were against district opponents, theynow sit atop Class 5A-8 with the samerecord.

Most of the contests haven’t been close.Aside from a 38-37 victory over WesleyChapel on Nov. 24, Zephyrhills has won allof its games by more than 20 points.

The temperature in the yoga classroomis a perfectly regulated 90 degrees. Humidityis 65 percent.

Students expect to sweat and, to sweat alot.

“The key to being on the board is you al-ways want to have big breaths,” McClure tellsher students, who are members of the LandO’ Lakes High School Yoga Club. “You’regoing to have to have full trust in me.”

At age 15, McClure is a master yogateacher, certified nearly three years agothrough Live, Love, Teach, a nationally recog-nized yoga alliance program. It’s an unusualaccomplishment for one so young.

She also is founder of the yoga club, afeat she accomplished in her first year atLand O’ Lakes High School.

“It’s really rare for a freshman to do that,”said classmate and yoga club member, 16-year-old Vanessa Toro.

Toro is among more than 60 students inthe club. There are no dues. But, once amonth, on a Friday, a dozen or so studentsget their yoga togs on and settle onto thebalance boards in the hottest room in LandO’ Lakes.

McClure teaches Baptiste-style yoga atFlorida Power Yoga, at 7016 Land O’ LakesBlvd., directly across from the high school.

McClure’s mother,Denice McClure, ownsthe studio, which livesup to the motto etchedon the studio’s store-front window – “It’s NotYour Grandma’s Yoga.”

Baptiste is very physi-cal, high energy andnonstop motion. Gentleyoga, it is not.

And, classes atFlorida Power give yogaanother twist withboards that test balanceand strengthen thebody’s core.

Denice McClure, also a master yogateacher, is co-creator of The Original PowerBoard. A patent is pending on the sturdyboard that is generally yoga mat size with arocking motion and a paddleboard look.

The boards are used with all classes.Sometimes free weights are added.

“This actually gets you pumped andsweaty,” said 14-year-old Novatana Wheeler.

“This is a different type of yoga,” saidLeslie Rabi, age 15. “You’re constantly sweat-ing and constantly moving.”

The yoga poses are familiar - the down-ward dog, the chair, warrior one and two,and at the end, a few minutes of meditation,in the dead man’s pose.

“Well, I wanted todo that,” she told hermother.

Denice McClure hadbeen a stressed-out par-ent, living in Ohio, withnot enough hours in the day. But, she tookyoga at a friend’s suggestion and came awaya convert.

“Every piece of my life made sense,”Denice McClure said. “I actually had moretime by going there.”

Trained as a chemist, she retired at age38 and toured the country learning fromdifferent yoga teachers and working towardmaster certification.

Her daughter wasright there, undauntedby being a child noviceamong adults. She has amaturity that is earned.

“She gets acclimatedto the adult world,” hermother said, “and for-gets she is 15.”

Christie McClurewanted to start a yogaclub at Pine ViewMiddle School. But, shehad to wait until fresh-man year at Land O’Lakes High School.

“I wanted to have aclub where studentscould find an outlet andget interested in an ac-tivity,” she said.

The club also focus-es on helping otherstudents who needhelp buying books andother supplies. Specialyoga events are held toraise money. The goal is

to donate $2,000 to the high school by theend of the year.

One recent Friday afternoon, JustinCheriyan, 15, took his first power yoga class. Heis a yoga club member who plans to be back.

“I was looking for a more aggressive form(of yoga) to relieve stress,” he said.

The appeal of power yoga covers thegamut from weight loss, to meeting up withfriends, to becoming a more conditioned

athlete, Christie McClure said.Behind her, an eye-catching mural cap-

tures the spirit of power yoga with messagesencouraging participants to “challenge yourlimits,” “get ready to sweat,” “inhale,” and“wring it out.”

Just give it your best and the rewardscome, the young yoga teacher said.

“As long as you’re getting messy and feel-ing great, that’s what our goal is,” she said.
