Land O’ Lakeslibrary opensmakerspaceBy Kathy [email protected]
The Land O’ Lakes Branch Library offi-cially opens its new “makerspace,” known asthe Foundry, at a ribbon cutting on Dec. 17at 10 a.m., at 2818 Collier Pkwy.
It will be the first dedicated makerspacefor a Pasco County library, but likely not thelast. The technology and equipment at theFoundry is the future for libraries that areadapting to the 21st century needs of theirtech-savvy patrons.
The Foundry will have two 3-D printers,state-of-the-art Computer Aided Design(CAD) equipment, an Oculus Rift virtual re-ality system, and an audio recording studio.
However, traditional hand and powertools as well as crafting tools and supplies, including yarn and thread, also will be avail-able.
At the ribbon cutting, there will be toursof the Foundry and demonstrations of the 3-D printer, the virtual reality system, and therecording studio.
Refreshments will be provided by theFriends of the Land O’ Lakes Library.
The Foundry will be open 15 hours aweek, with a librarian available to answerquestions and show how the technologyworks.
A survey was done to find out how peo-ple would want to use the makerspace, saidKathleen Rothstein, the library’s branchmanager.
The room already is the meeting place
for the Edgar Allan Ohms robotics teamfrom Land O’ Lakes High School. The team isunique in being sponsored by the library.
However, Rothstein said the room also
would host other activities.“A lot of people want to learn textiles,”
she said. “They want sewing basics classes, and to learn how to do small home repairsand woodworking.”
So far, people have used the 3-D printersto do small items, such as figurines,Rothstein said.
The printers can make items as large as 8inches by 8 inches, she added.
The robotics team already is finding theCAD system and 3-D printers useful in build-ing its robots. In one instance, the teamproduced a plastic washer.
It took about 10 minutes including prep-ping and cooling off times, said 16-year-oldPhoebe Mitchell, the robotics team’s safetycaptain.
“It was a lot easier than going to a storeto get it,” she said. “It’s cheaper than buyingthem. And, they seem to hold up really well.”

An elevated toll road flying over U.S. 41could split the community and shut downsome longstanding Land O’ Lakes business-es, according to area business owners whospoke at a public hearing about redesigningthe intersection at State Road 54 and U.S.41.
They told representatives of the FloridaDepartment of Transportation that a “nobuild” option is the best choice, at least fornow. Several suggested that a by-pass to di-rect traffic around the intersection wouldwork better than an elevated State Road 54.
More than 100 people took part in thepublic hearing on Dec. 10 at the Myrtle LakeBaptist Church, off State Road 54.
Those attending could see exhibits ofproposed road construction, could watch avideo and could offer public comment.
“We are not against development, but de-
velopment should not be done for onegroup at the expense of so many others,”said Elayne Bassinger, president of theCentral Pasco Chamber of Commerce.
Bassinger renewed an earlier request forthe state transportation department toschedule workshops to permit a more in-depth discussion of the issues for residentsand business owners.
While some favor a no-build option, oth-ers want solutions for an intersection thatoften is described as being “a nightmare.”
About 99,000 vehicles per day cruisethrough the intersection, according to statedata. By 2040, state highway officials predictthat to more than double — with an esti-mated daily count of 208,000 vehicles.

Members of Wesley ChapelHigh School’s cross-countryteams led a solemn processionaround the school’s track onDec. 11 to honor the memory ofJaret Harshman.
The 15-year-old died from in-juries sustained in a Dec. 9 caraccident.
Shortly after the accident, hisfather, Mike Harshman, sharedthe news of his son’s death onFacebook.
After first apologizing for theshocking nature of the post,Mike Harshman, of WesleyChapel, wrote: “This evening onhis way to church with friends, our oldest son Jaret was killed ina fatal car accident. He was justshy of his 16th birthday on Dec.28. Kristi and I are numb and dis-traught - it seems surreal to us. We love Jaret, and are so proud of him - a terrible hole willbe felt in our family forever, and we are stillin shock over this. But we take great com-fort in our faith, believing he was welcomedhome into the arms of Christ.”
In the post, Mike Harshman, who is apreacher, also asked for prayers for the twoboys that Jaret was riding with, Ryan andMichael Miller, also of Wesley Chapel.
Michael Miller “was in surgery for hoursand appears to have a long recovery fromhis injuries,” the post says. It also notes thatRyan Miller “will have to deal with the emo-tions he will face. We love those 2 boys likeour own sons, and will continue to embracethem as this will be a difficult road for themas well …”
According to a report from the FloridaHighway Patrol, 18-year-old Ryan Miller wasdriving a 2006 Chevy Aveo north onCulbreath Road, approaching a stop sign atthe intersection County Road 572 (PowellRoad) around 6:18 p.m., on Dec. 9.
Meanwhile, Christopher Reed Russell,25, of Spring Hill was driving his 2014Dodge Ram on County Road 572.
Miller failed to stop at the stop sign andtraveled into the pathway of Russell’s vehi-cle, according to the Florida Highway Patrolreport. Charges are pending.
During the memorial at the school, mem-
bers of the cross-country teams carried apaper banner containing hundreds of trib-utes to Jaret.
The messages were printed in tiny let-ters, or scrawled in giant cursive. They
were written with markers orpens in green, red, black, blueand pink.
The posts expressed sorrowat Jaret’s death, gratitude for hav-ing known him and hope forhim to have a new life in heav-en.
Here’s how Nicole put it:“Jaret, you always brightened upmy day and lit the whole roomup with your smile. You wereone of the best people I ever gotto know. Love you J. Harsh.”
Another friend, Pey, wrote,“I’ve known you for seven yearsnow and I will love you and missyou forever. Doesn’t seem real …You had a heart of gold.”
Members of his cross-countryteam wrote a tribute, too. “Iknow, we know, that you will bewatching us at cross-countrymeets and cheering us on fromup in heaven. Thank you for
being an amazing friend, brother to us. Welove you so much.” They signed the message:“Love the cross-country team that you willalways be a part of.”
Desirae K., added “you were loved bymany and had such a kind heart. You will bemissed dearly. Rest easy.”
Members of the cross-country team, andthe coach, spoke during the memorial, de-scribing Jaret as a devoted runner whoinspired others with his dedication to thesport.
Mike Harshman spoke, too, thanking thehundreds gathered at the track, and every-one else who has offered comfort andsupport in response to Jaret’s death.
Carin Hetzler-Nettles, principal at WesleyChapel High, characterized Jaret as “an in-credible young man who loved school, loved his friends and family, and loved par-ticipating in sports here at Wesley ChapelHigh.”
She also noted: “ He touched many liveswith his random acts of kindness and self-lessness, and was adored by his Wildcatfamily. He will be missed greatly and will al-ways be in our hearts.”

The holidays are meant to be a time ofgood cheer, but with all of the hustle and bus-tle, there’s also more opportunity for accidentsand crime, too.
Here are some pointers from various localagencies and national websites, intended tohelp you have a safe and happy season.
Here are some holiday safety tips from theHillsborough County Sheriff’s Office:
Be Safe While Shopping• Lock your car doors and roll up your win-
dows.• Limit the amount of cash you
carry.• If possible, pay for
your purchases with acredit or debit card.
• Limit how muchjewelry you wear.
• Keep your purseclose to your body andyour wallet in an inside jack-et pocket if possible.
• Place all packages in your trunk, sopeople walking near your vehicle can’t seethem.
• Remember where you parked.• Have your keys out when you’re ap-
proaching your vehicle.• Don’t leave cellphones, purses or other
items in your parked car where they can beseen.
• When using ATM machines: use one in apopulated area and pay constant attention toyour surroundings. If possible, go during day-light hours. If anyone is lurking near themachine, pass it up and find another.Remember to retrieve your credit/debit cardafter the transaction.
Be Safe at Home• Be sure to lock your doors and windows
when you leave your home.• Don’t display gifts where they can be
seen from a window or doorway.• Leave on a light or a television while
away, to give the impression that someone ishome.
• Be wary of strangers who come to yourdoor seeking charitable donations.
• Don’t leave boxes from gifts outside forthe trash collector. Take them to a dumpster sothieves don’t target your homes for new TVsand other items.
Fire Safety TipsHere are some pointers from Tampa Fire
Rescue to help you stay safe at home, especial-ly during the holidays.
• Be sure your batteries are fresh in yoursmoke detectors, and be sure there are detec-tors near bedrooms and on every level of yourhome.
• Never leave cooking unattended.
• Do not wear loose-fitting clothes nearburners.
• Keep the cooking area free of greasebuildup.
• Do not place items near the stove thatcould catch fire, such as paper towels, cerealboxes and dishtowels.
• Turn off the stove and unplug small appli-ances, when leaving your home.
• Never smoke in bed.• Keep ashtrays away from upholstered fur-
niture and curtains.• Never leave burning cigarettes unattend-
ed.• Keep matches and lighters out of the
reach of children.• Use alternative heatersonly in well-ventilated
areas.• Do not use space
heaters in areas wherethey can be easily
knocked over.• Keep blankets,
clothing, furniture and any-thing that could catch fire away
from portable heaters.• Always use a protective screen near fire-
places.Be Safe While TravelingIf you’re hitting the road during the holi-
days, these tips from AAA might come inhandy.
• Be sure your car is roadworthy. Check theair in your tires. (The proper pressure level canbe found in the owner’s manual, or on a stickerthat’s usually located on the driver’s side door-jamb). Also, get your battery checked, have yourcar’s fluid levels checked and make sure youhave good windshield wipers.
• Buckle up. Be sure everyone is buckledup, and be sure that little ones are traveling inthe proper type of car seats.
• Know the route you’re taking, and makesure someone else knows it, too.
• Be sure that you’ve adjusted your seat andyour mirrors for maximum safety and comfortbefore you leave your driveway, or the rentalcar agency.
• Stay focused. Changing the radio, puttingon makeup or talking on the phone takes yourfocus off the road. If a phone call or text can’twait, have a passenger take the call or send thetext.
• Be alert to what other drivers are doing.Even good drivers can’t predict what otherdrivers will do.
• Don’t drink and drive. If you’re going tobe drinking, have a designated driver.
• If you get lost, don’t panic. Often, you cansimply take the next exit to turn around to getback on track.
• Pay attention to weather conditions andreports, and make any needed route adjust-ments.

of options.“We’re not taking cats that are inconven-
ient for somebody,” Jenkins said. “They haveto be in advanced difficult circumstances, and we’ll consider taking them.”
More than a dozen cats roam the half-acre of the Cats Cradle, lounging or strollingon bridges that crisscross the yard from traindepot to a lookout station at the chickencoop to a tall wooden tower.
On a recent morning, Garfield nappedmid-way between the tower and a smallschoolhouse that contains supplies and avideo monitoring system.
Inside the schoolhouse, the colony’snewest tenant - Prowler - stayed by himselfin a “transition” room, also known as the sun-room.
Prowler, a 12-year-old marble Bengal, would hang out there for awhile, Jenkinssaid, before moving outdoors and claiminghis place in the social hierarchy.
“Prowler is getting adjusted,” Jenkins said.“The main thing is to get him used to thesights and smells. There’s a lot to do and seehere.”
While Prowler was hanging out in thetransition room, Garfield suddenly poppedin to share feeding time with him.
Babette, a seal point Himalayan, groomedherself atop the tower. Forrest stretched outon the ground next to half a dozen feedingdishes.
Moxie padded over to Jenkins, side-by-side with the mini-horse and an inquisitivegoat.
Jenkins explained the eclectic mix of ani-mals.
“We just like a variety in a farm setting,”said Jenkins, whose property is zoned agri-cultural.
A row of frontier storefronts houses asenior center with cat beds and train trackscircle a water pond in the Garden Room.
Jenkins hopes in the future to raise about$2,000 to refurbish two more buildings, andopen up room for more cats.
He recently began restoring an old trainengine that once made appearances at theLutz Fourth of July parade.
The sanctuary began with Forrest andBumble (now placed in a forever home), anda plaintive request from Jenkins’ wife. Oncethe children, Casey and Nikki, grew up, theback yard sort of went to seed - and weed.
“Either tear it down or re-purpose it,” hiswife told him.
A neighbor’s two cats and a dog in crisismade up Jenkins’ mind. The dog found a newhome but Jenkins’ took in Forrest and tem-porarily, Bumble.
“It kind of grew from there,” Jenkins said.Cats range in age from 8 to 18 years. No
feral cats are accepted.Babette’s owner moved from an assisted
living facility to a nursing home. Similar sto-ries of life changes, such as financial loss, death and illness, brought Prowler, Bonnie,Daisy, Tucker and Clyde to the sanctuary aswell.
The cats have to be in good health andopen to joining a cat colony. A local veteri-narian provides discounted rates for medicalcare, and another veterinarian serves on thenonprofit’s board of directors.
“I don’t like to turn people away, but wehave to have a balance to keep the commu-nity happy,” Jenkins said.
Jenkins does what he can to place hiscats. A few have settled in as companion catsat nursing homes. “Sometimes residents arereally, really lonely, but they want to care fora pet,” Jenkins said. “They are happy to havea cat to sit on their lap. It’s great for the cat. They get more attention than they’d gethere.”
Or Cats Cradle residents have found anew home with individuals willing to take inan older, more settled cat.
“This is a niche we’ve kind of fallen into,”Jenkins said. “It’s a national problem.Everybody wants a cute kitten.”
Jenkins would like to put a spotlight onthe problem of older, homeless cats - anddogs - and see more sanctuaries pop uparound the country. He also believes petowners need to think about setting up pettrusts as part of their wills.
“It’s unfortunate they are over age eightand often unadoptable,” he said. “Many (pets)are put down, and they have a lot of love inthem.”
For information, call Jenkins at (813) 501-8868, or visit Cats-Cradle.org.
Kirk Bogen, with the Florida Department of Transportation, addressed more than 100 peopleat a public hearing, at Myrtle Lake Baptist Church.
Clyde, left, Bonnie, Daisy and Bumper share a picnic table at Cats Cradle.
Cats Cradle is decorated for Christmas.
John Spear moved into a subdivision offState Road 54 in 2010.
He said he and his wife often sit in trafficfor five minutes or more.
When they first arrived in Land O’ Lakes,he said, “Traffic used to be light. Now thelanes are full. I’m appreciative of somethinglike this being done. It looks like a lot ofthought has gone into this.”
Stephen Riddell, a Canadian snowbird, recently returned from Ontario. “In the lastsix months traffic has increased tremen-dously,” he said. “I think improvements areneeded. I don’t know which alternativeyet.”
But, some think an elevated roadwaywould essentially be a wall, separating LandO’ Lakes and Lutz.
They said the purpose of the new inter-change seemed to offer more benefits tomotorists from other counties, includingPinellas.
“The Land O’ Lakes community de-serves to be more than a high-speed avenuecarrying cars east and west through ourcommunity,” said Ann Childers. “No build, that’s the only thing I could vote for as aresident in good conscience.”
The state department of transportationis conducting a study to evaluate the proj-ect before settling on the design and typeof improvements for the intersection. Thecompletion date for the study is spring2016.
About $3.4 million is available for designwork. However, no money is budgeted topurchase rights of way, or for construction.
Improvements to the intersection areamong Pasco County’s 2015 list of top 10traffic priorities.
Two construction alternatives would ele-vate State Road 54 over U.S. 41, and bothwould have toll lanes. A no-build option ispossible, too.
One proposal for the State Road 54 fly-over would cost about $160 million. Thatwould require about 70 acres in rights ofway. About 24 businesses could be relocat-ed based on loss of property, according tostate transportation data.
The new intersection would have fourthrough lanes on U.S. 41 in each direction,
two through lanes at-grade and two elevat-ed lanes on State Road 54.
The more expensive alternative wouldcost about $180 million, and would requireabout 30 acres in rights of way. No addition-al lanes would be added to U.S. 41, and turnlanes would not change. There would betwo through lanes at-grade and two elevat-ed through lanes, again on State Road 54.
Under this option, six businesses couldpotentially be relocated including RussellAdams Realty, MCOR Automotive, Pinch aPenny, Hungry Howie’s Pizza, McDonald’s,7-Eleven and CVS Pharmacy.
Keystone Community Church also couldbe in the pathway of construction.
The hearing was intended to gatherinput from the public, and that will be con-sidered before a decision is made, said KirkBogen, environmental management engi-neer for FDOT in District Seven.
“They are both viable alternatives,” hesaid. “We’re coordinating with county plan-ners.”
Bogen said the no-build alternative alsoremains an option.
Meanwhile, property owners say theyare in limbo.
“It’s the waiting game until they decide,”said Russell Adams, owner of Russell AdamsRealty on U.S. 41. “You can’t build more, andit’s hard to sell.”
Adams said he can see that somethinghas to be done, but said poor planning hasbeen the problem.
Thousands of homes in new subdivi-sions have been approved over the years, and he said, “They know when you planhomes, you’ll have 2.5 cars (per home).”
Trinna Van Nostrand’s family has owneda bar on U.S. 41 since the mid-1970s. It wasknown as Sam’s Place when her father op-erated it, and mostly recently as RockHarley Saloon.
Like many business owners, VanNostrand said the previous widening of U.S.41 chopped off part of her property. Thebar now sits a few feet off the road.
The new road project could chop offeven more land.
“If they are going to take my building, Idon’t want to spend a lot of money on it,”she said. “I’m fortunate to have enough inthe back to move back, but being in limbo, Ican’t do anything.”

Academy at the Lakes tops all 2A private schoolsBy Michael [email protected]
When Tom Haslam took the athletic di-rector position at Academy at the Lakesaround seven years ago, the school had var-sity teams. But, a lot of their games wereagainst junior varsity opponents.
With a high school enrollment of slightlymore than 100, the talent pool was limited. In some sports, around half of the school’sschedule would be games against a rivalschool’s lesser squad.
“We were just trying to start somewhere, and get competitive games,” Haslam recalled.
They started small, but they didn’t staythere.
Academy at the Lakes is now seen as apremier athletic program in class 2A compe-tition, and it was recognized as such bywinning the Carey E. McDonald Award, given to the state’s top 2A private schoolathletic program.
The award, presented by the FloridaAthletic Coaches Association, recognizes theschool’s accomplishments during the 2014-15 school year.
To turn things around, Haslam initially fo-cused on a couple of key areas.
He wanted to upgrade the coachingstaff, and was able to hire men and womenwith a strong track record at other schools. The change produced results for someteams rather quickly.
The second change seems a bit unortho-dox. He upgraded the Wildcats’ uniforms.
“It may sound like a minute thing, but it’snot. Kids have to feel good about them-selves, and they have to feel important. And, I thought that was one thing that wasan easy fix that we could do right away andmake an improvement,” Haslam said. “Itdoesn’t sound like much, but if you’re a 16-or 17-year-old kid, it’s important.”
Haslam switched the school over to Nikeuniforms, giving them a sharper look.
That change yielded results, too.The student athletes more-closely resem-
bled their opponents, giving them a boost inconfidence, and giving the program a moresuccessful image that they soon would du-plicate on the field and on the court.
To be recognized as a top 2A school, aschool must be successful across a varietyof sports.
While some schools have a good team or
two, Academy at the Lakes has found suc-cess in several sports.
During the 2014-15 school year, eight ofthe school’s individuals or teams reachedthe regional or state level of competition.
The success isn’t limited to this year, ei-ther.
The girls’ basketball team has reachedthe final four in each of the past four sea-
sons. The girls’ softball team has won fourstraight district championships, and alsoreached a final four. A swimmer at theschool won a state championship, a boys’doubles tennis team won a district title anda girls’ doubles tennis team won a statechampionship.
With that much success, all of the acade-my coaches want to continue their winning
ways in their respective sport. And that includes Haslam, who coaches
boys’ basketball, in addition to being theschool’s athletic director.
“You don’t want to be the coach thathasn’t got your program going yet,” Haslamsaid. “I feel some pressure, you bet. I likethat. I think that’s the way it should be.”
Haslam’s team certainly is contributingto the school’s overall athletic success.
The boys’ basketball team has reached theregional finals three of the past four years, and made it to the final four last season.
Now that the academy is an elite program, staying that way presents its own challenges.Haslam is hiring new coaches to improve thesports that are lagging, and he also must re-tain the talented coaches on his staff.
With a track record of success, games insome sports frequently reaching capacity at-tendance and a high school student bodythat’s grown beyond 160, Haslam’s goal is tokeep moving forward and continue improv-ing.
That includes the uniforms. No longer content with just one brand of
apparel, their current agreement allowsteams to choose between Nike, Adidas andUnder Armour.
The school’s schedule also includesstiffer competition than teams have faced inthe past. As the program has grown instrength, its opponents have become chal-lenging, sometimes including schools suchas Mitchell and Land O’ Lakes high schools.
In addition to winning the Carey E.McDonald Award, Academy at the Lakes alsoplaced third overall for the FHSAA Floyd E.Lay Sunshine Cup All-Sports Award, whichincludes more than 100 eligible 2A publicand private schools.
Haslam finds the recognition gratifying, since he has a hand in all of the sports atthe academy.
But, the athletic director credits the menand women he’s hired to lead theWildcats with shaping the school into aperennial athletic success.
“To me, it’s all about the coaches. We’vegot some great people leading our kids, andI’m smart enough that once I get a goodcoach, I stay out of their way,” Haslamsaid. “I’ll take a little bit of credit for gettingthem there. But once they’re there, they’rethe ones winning these games and moldingthese kids.”
COURTESY OF ACADEMY AT THE LAKESAudra Leipold and the rest of the girls’ basketball team have contributed to the award-win-ning athletic success at Academy at the Lakes.

If you want to have yourself a merry‘little’ Christmas, you may want tobypass Bill and Debbie Tuttle’splace.
They’re not into merry ‘little’ Christmases— they prefer presenting a mega-dose ofholiday cheer. And, they deliver it throughthousands of artfully arranged decorations.
Beyond the mere size and variety of thedécor, there are stories behind scores ofitems in their display.
And, in a true spirit of Christmas, thecouple will open their home to the publicon Dec. 18, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., so peoplecan take a peek. The couple’s home is at2308 Camp Indianhead Road in Land O’Lakes.
When visitors arrive, they’ll see a lighteddisplay in the front yard, and decorationsadorning the house.
But, that’s just a prelude to what liesahead inside.
Every room in the house is dressed upfor the season.
Near the front door, a giant figure ofSanta, welcomes those who enter.
There are trees, with various themes, indifferent rooms of the house.
In the office and crafts room, for in-stance, there’s a tree with ornaments madefrom old wooden spools and decorationsdepicting various crafts.
There’s a Mickey tree and a Minnie treethat Debbie Tuttle made, to complement theanimated Disney characters adorning a shelfin the couple’s living room.
There’s also a massive tree illuminated by5,000 lights and decked out with ornamentsdepicting moments of the family’s lifethrough the years.
The couple’s zeal for Christmas is on dis-play everywhere.
The sunken tub in the master bath, forinstance, is off limits for the holidays be-cause decorations encircle the tub.
Even the dog crate, in the couple’s mas-ter bedroom, is decked out for the season.
There’s a holiday bedspread that Debbiemade, on the couple’s bed.
There’s homage to her late father, too, featuring a miniature John Deere tractor, asmall tree decorated with tiny John Deerehats, and a small figure of a fisherman — de-picting the things that he loved best.
The dining room features an 11-footbottle tree that Debbie made this year, using bottles she bought at Dollar Treestores. “I went to 13 stores in one day,” shesaid, adding it took 201 bottles to makethe tree, and she even picked up some of

There is no charge to takethe tour, but donations areaccepted.
The couple uses themoney to provide Christmasfor some families in need. This year, theythink they’ve received enough donations toprovide a Christmas dinner and presents forfour families.
Getting ready for the holidays at theTuttles begins on Oct. 1 and takes consider-able work, but the couple enjoys sharingtheir holiday handiwork.
They also enjoy sharing their enthusiasm

Making holidays bright is what it’s allabout, said Bill Tuttle, who works for SeniorHelpers.
