The Shops at Wiregrass is adding freshfaces to its retail lineup.
By the end of fall, the outdoor mall willhost the grand openings of seven newstores.
The first three shops, Lola Perfume,Soleciety Sneaker Boutique, and 3DMusketeers Printing, already are open.
VisionWorks, VomFASS Oils, Vinegars,Spirits & Wines, Rocket Fizz Soda Pop &Candy Shop, and Irish 31 will arrive in thenext months.
“We’re continually working with our leas-ing department. We listen continually to ourcustomers who tell us what they want,” said
Greg Lenners, general manager at The Shopsat Wiregrass. “We try to have a little bit ofeverything.”
The new shops are part of the routine ofkeeping a mall fresh and were plannedahead of the opening of Tampa PremiumOutlets, Lenners said.
“We have to be very strategic with whatwe put in,” Lenners said. That’s true for everymall, including Tampa Premium Outlets, henoted.
Four outparcels at Wiregrass are still upfor grabs, so additional announcementscould happen this year, Lenners said.

Efforts begin to reduce floodingBy Kevin [email protected]
The Hillsborough County Public Worksdepartment will soon begin a project aimedat reducing the potential for flooding nearthe intersection at West Bearss Avenue andLake Magdalene Boulevard.
The department expects to begin con-struction on the West Bearss DrainageImprovement Project within the nextmonth. The $400,000 project entails replac-ing the existing drainage structure at thesoutheast corner of the intersection, upgrad-ing the drainage pipe on West Bearss Avenueand constructing a new linear pond to allowpretreatment of the water before it flows toLake Magdalene.

Robbie Wiseman said debris buildup overtime has led to flooding at the intersection.
Stormwater flows through a flume to aditch bottom inlet with a grate positionedon top to prevent debris from entering thestorm system and ultimately the lake,Wiseman said.
“This project will provide a large slotinto the structure to allow water to flowinto the structure, while still preventing thedebris from entering the system,” he said.
Wiseman added the drainage project willallow stormwater runoff to flow to the lin-ear pond, located on the south side ofBearss Avenue.

A group of 13- to 15-year-oldTampa girls are turning heads in thelocal music scene.
Extra Celestial, an all-girl bandmade up of vocalist Casey Banales,14; guitarist Devyn Dacus, 15; bassistCaitlin McHale, 15; and drummerAnabella Vivero, 13, will be perform-ing several live shows in the nexttwo months.
They’ll be at Skipper’sSmokehouse on April 8, the HardRock Café on April 30 and TheOrpheum on May 14.
The band, formed in August byJim Chambers of Jim ChambersMusic Box, is also working onrecording its first single, “Restart.”
Chambers, a former 15-yearrecord executive who won threeGrammys with Maroon 5, the DaveMatthews Band and Flyleaf, hadbeen trying to put an all-female band togeth-er for some time.
“I had worked with them in the past,”said Chambers, who works closely withthree other bands. “I finally was able to as-semble them.
“I think they’re the only all-female bandin Tampa. Each of them do have (good) qual-ities; they all play very well.”
The band, described as “alternative rockwith pop leanings,” mainly plays cover songsfrom the 1980s to contemporary.

include “Helter Skelter” by The Beatles,“Heartbreaker” by Pat Benatar and “Exes andOhs” by Elle King.
“We don’t really stick to one specific areaof music. We kind of just do everything,” saidMcHale, a sophomore at Steinbrenner HighSchool who’s played bass for two years.
While it’s “much easier” for the band tolearn cover songs, the group also has itseyes set on creating a few more singles, andpossibly creating an EP, extended play.
Their single, which they’ll record in a stu-dio on April 17, was written by Banales and
riffed by Dacus. The process of crafting thesingle to make it “sound good” took about amonth, band members said.
“I think it will be easier now to put outmore (songs) since we understand theprocess of songwriting more,” McHale said.
The band, which typically rehearsestwice a week, has developed a close cama-raderie since forming several months ago.
“I think it’s because we’re all from differ-ent cliques at school,” explained Banales, a

Four New River Elementary students aregetting set to take off their “thinking caps”and put on their “chef’s caps.”
Fourth-graders Payton Furman, CameronKeehn, Payton Leidy and Charyn Maldonadowill compete as a team in the third annualGridiron Cooking Challenge at One BucPlace, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers training fa-cility, on May 14 from 9 a.m. to noon. Otherregional competitions are being held at theMiami Dolphins’ and Jacksonville Jaguars’ fa-cilities on separate dates.
The challenge was created by the FloridaDairy Farmers and is part of Fuel Up to Play60, an in-school nutrition and physical activ-ity program launched by the National DairyCouncil and the NFL to help encourageyouth to lead healthier lives.
The team from New River Elementary, lo-cated in Wesley Chapel, was named as oneof four central Florida finalists in March afterthe students’ recipe — “Cheesy Chicken andBacon Quesadilla with Yogurt Veggie Dip” —was judged and chosen by members of theDairy Council of Florida.
The four students decided to create aquesadilla recipe, since they all enjoy the en-trée, and knew the contest required entrantsto make an original recipe that includeddairy products.
To make the Mexican classic healthier,they opted to add a few veggies — peppersand chopped spinach— to the recipe.
“I wasn’t sure about the peppers or thechopped spinach, but then I did end up lik-ing it, because all of it was good together,”said Leidy, 10. “I don’t like them separate, butI do like them together.”
The team will have 60 minutes to pre-pare and present the quesadilla and veggiedip in front of the judges at One Buc Place.After making the meal once before, they areconfident they can get the finished productcomplete in 45 minutes or less.
To do so, group member has been as-signed a job, whether it’s making the veggiedip, flipping the quesadilla or cutting it intofootball shapes.
“It’s fun cooking, but the best part is eat-ing it,” Maldonado said with excitement.
“I like how we get to cook at One BucPlace. That’s my favorite part, and cooking infront of other people and the judges,” saidKeehn, a fan of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
If the New River students win first place,
they’ll each receive a tablet, and the schoolwill receive a $2,500 prize pack.
The team’s program advisor and school’sP.E. teacher, Kathie Gillooly, said the entireinitiative is beneficial, because it helps stu-dents learn about healthy habits and helpsthe school obtain additional funding.
“Since we brought this aspect into theschool, I think it really helps them becausethey know “fuel up” means eating well, and“play 60” means they’re supposed to exer-cise for 60 minutes,” said Gillooly, who’sbeen an advisor for the cooking challengeall three years.
“I really think it’s an advantage thatthey’re doing this for kids. It’s also an advan-tage for schools getting that grant money,”she said.

boat, and he (Hugh) took them (water) ski-ing. We’d swim at the beach. We took themfishing,” Nellie said.
“We’ve traveled all over the UnitedStates, from Maine to San Francisco. We tookthe whole family, the children and grandchil-dren, to Yellowstone,” Hugh added.
Having fun with each other, with theirfriends and with their family, has alwaysbeen important to both of them.
“We’ve always had fun. You just can’thave a good marriage without some fun init,” Nellie said.
They also share many fond memories oftimes they’ve shared together.
When they lived in San Antonio, theylived near the Alamo.
“Bands would be down there playingevery night. Our windows would be open,and we could hear that soft romanticmusic,” Nellie said. “They had a watermelon
hut there. They served nothing but water-melon down by the water, so we’d havewatermelon every night.”
Hugh thinks Nellie saved his life.“I went into Afib and my heart was beat-
ing 160 beats a minute, and they took me toTampa General,” Hugh said.
He spent seven days in intensive care,with Nellie at his side.
“He was heavily sedated,” Nellie said.“They would say: ‘He might can hear you.’
“I’d say, ‘Hugh can you hear me? Squeezemy hand.’ He’d squeeze my hand,” Nelliesaid.
When they were young, Nellie said, sherecalls imagining Hugh the way he lookstoday.
“That’s what I always wanted, for us togrow old together,” she said. “We’re actuallystill in love. It’s a much deeper love now.”
Hugh agreed: “She’s still my sweetheart.”

They were teenagers.She was visiting her brother and his wife
in Tampa, and she took the streetcar over tothe Sulphur Springs swimming pool.
He was at the pool to relax.He spotted her.“He came over and started talking to me,
and he was cute, so I talked back with him,”said Nellie Bailey, of Lutz.
“I was 16,” said Nellie, now 87.“I was 17,” said Gains Hugh Bailey Sr.,
now 88.“That day we went
to Whitehead’sDrugstore, got a ham-burger and went to amovie,” Hugh said.
They don’t remem-ber what movie theysaw.
“I was looking ather, not the movie,”Hugh said.
“We dated everynight the whole sum-mer,” Nellie said. “Wewent to the beaches.We bowled and weate out, and we wentto movies, and wewent over to the parkand kissed under thetrees.”
But, then she hadto return to NorthCarolina to finish highschool. He had to fin-ish high school, too.
“We wrote aboutonce every twoweeks. We continuedon with our normallives, going to school,and dating other boysand girls. But, we did-n’t forget each other.We kept writing,”Nellie said.
Then, she movedto Tampa with herfamily in January of1946.
“We renewed ourdating, dating everynight,” Nellie said.
Then he was draft-ed.
“He asked me tomarry him and gowith him. I said, ‘OK, let’s go,” Nellie said.
They married on March 31, 1946.“Our first stop was Amarillo, Texas. The
next stop was San Antonio, Texas. The thirdstop was West Palm Beach. I followed himwherever he was sent.
“He was honorably discharged inFebruary 1947,” Nellie said.
“We had our first anniversary in Tampa,March 31, and our daughter was born then.Right on the day.”
Their second child, a son, also was bornon their anniversary in 1951.
The couple went on to have a total offour children: Donna, Gains Jr., James Douglasand Janice. The couple also has six grandchil-dren and seven great-grandchildren.
This past weekend, they celebrated their70th wedding anniversary at a party withabout two dozen family members.
Even after seven decades, the romance isalive.
Nellie said she wrote Hugh a love letteryears ago. “He reads it every night,” she said.
And, she still recalls every word of a songcalled “You Belong to My Heart” — theirsong when they were dating.
“He tells me everyday, ‘I love you morethan anything in theworld.’ And, I tell himthe same thing, everyday,” Nellie said.
“We always kissgoodbye when he goesout the door and kisswhen he comes in,” shesaid.
“We love each othervery much. If we have aspat or disagreement,we can’t stay mad, orgo to bed mad, becausewe won’t be able tosleep if we do.
“I’m miserable assoon as we have crosswords and he is, too, sothe sooner we makeup, the happier we are,”Nellie said.
“We just can’t stayangry. I’ll try to see hisside and he’ll try to seemy side, and we kind ofcommunicate on it andsettle it – to both of oursatisfactions, to wherewe’re both all rightwith it,” Nellie said.
“Whatever is impor-tant to him, isimportant to me. And,that’s the same way hefeels,” she said.
“If it isn’t, I make itimportant,” Hugh said.
For instance, he saidhe learned to fish aftershe gave him a rod andreel.
“I fished when I wasa child and he didn’t, soI bought him a rod anda reel as an anniversary
present,” Nellie said. “Our neighbor was a fisherman, and he
started taking me fishing,” Hugh said.For her part, Nellie expanded her musi-
cal tastes.“He likes country music, and I never did
like country music,” she said. “I like countrymusic now.”
Hugh was always a good provider, Nelliesaid.
“We took vacations every year with thechildren, to the beaches, and camping andfishing. We enjoyed them so much. We got a

Motorists passing through Wesley Chapeltoday are likely to see it as a place on themove.
Within the past decade or so, a land-scape once characterized by cattle ranchesand citrus groves, has become a place be-coming more widely known for itsshopping, medical, education and residentialoptions.
But, there are plenty of people who re-member when the community was moreclosely associated with timber and turpen-tine operations, moonshine stills and gatorhunts.
To help keep those memories alive, thePasco-Hernando State College’s PorterCampus at Wiregrass Ranch hosted a WesleyChapel History Fair.
The college intends to have the eventevery year, said Dr. Bonnie Clark, vice presi-dent of distance education and provost ofthe Porter Campus.
Speakers at the event were:• Madonna Jervis Wise, author of “Images
of America: Wesley Chapel,” who talkedabout details about the community she un-earthed during her research
• J. Thomas Touchton, founding chairmanof the Tampa Bay History Center, whobrought along an 1884 map of HernandoCounty, when it included Wesley Chapel,though not called that at the time
• Quinn Porter Miller, who shared storiesabout the Porters’ history in Wesley Chapel
• Stephanie Bracknell Black, director ofthe Pioneer Florida Museum & Village, whoshared stories about her grandfather, LonnieTucker
• Angelo Liranzo, a librarian who talkedabout a project involving the digitizing ofmore than 100 years of newspapers, andhow to access the data
Because Wesley Chapel, unlike somecommunities, did not have a central down-town or a government, Wise relied oninformation she gleaned from homesteadrecords, pension records and other publicrecords, and interviews with families.
As she conducted her research, shelearned about the close connections be-tween families.
“I’ve rarely seen families that cared somuch about each other,” Wise said.
She was surprised to learn about the im-portant role that music played in WesleyChapel.
“There’s something in Southern Culturethat’s known as the fifth Sunday sing.Sometimes it is known as the singing con-vention,” Wise said, explaining people wouldgather for an entire day of singing and pic-nics.
“The First Baptist Church of WesleyChapel was the center. After the convention,they had something that was known as‘Dinner on the Ground.’ This was an all-daything.”
Wise also talked about the turpentinecommunities, truck patches, gator huntingand moonshining that were part of life inWesley Chapel.
There aren’t many remaining historichouses in Wesley Chapel, and that’s mainly
because most were constructed of wood,Wise said. “We actually only found aboutthree or four homesteads that were stillstanding.”
Quinn Porter Miller, another speaker, ap-plauded the idea of annual history fairs.
“My dad would talk about all of thesestories. My brother and I would say, ‘We’vejust got to get them all in one room, givethem some Scotch and hit record.’
“We didn’t get the chance before my dadpassed and, thankfully, Madonna (JervisWise) was able to get these people togetherand really document all these wonderfulstories and these things, otherwise, thatwould really go down with the people,”Miller said.
Miller told the crowd about her grandfa-ther James Hatcher “Wiregrass” Porter, whomoved into the area in 1946 with his wife,Martha.
Her dad, Don Porter, was 6 when the
family moved to Wesley Chapel.“Wiregrass’ father, J.B. Porter, or J.B. or
Pop Porter, as he was called, bought the landin 1937 from the Rockefeller Land Trust, forsomewhere around $3 an acre,” Miller said.
When Wiregrass moved to the area, heand his family lived in an old frame house.
“My grandma Martha would cook thesethree hot meals a day on a Coleman stove.No electricity, no running water up thereuntil they built their red brick house on(State Road) 54 in 1960,” Miller said.
“I don’t know if anyone could haveknown how this area would grow,” Millersaid.
But, the family has always known howimportant education is, and that’s what in-spired the gift of 60 acres where PorterCampus now sits.
She recalled her father’s determinationto help make that happen.
“He knew how important it was that astudent could go from preschool throughcollege without having to leave the WesleyChapel community,” she said.
And, when Don Porter came to the col-lege’s dedication ceremony shortly beforehis death, he was thrilled by the college, shesaid. She recalls him saying: “Can you believethis? Isn’t it wild?”
Touchton also recalled Don Porter’s vi-sion for the area.
“I remember visiting with Don when hewould show me the master plan, as it wasbeing developed. He was willing to be pa-tient, and he would point out different areasof the property – this will be residential, thiswill be shopping, this will be education, thiswill be sports. He was very, very proud ofthe vision, in conjunction with his brothers,of course, and I’m sure J.D. and Quinn,”Touchton said.
Black shared tales of the legendaryLonnie Tucker, known for his gator huntingabilities and his marksmanship.
To her, though, he was her grandpa.She recalled asking him once to bring
two big watermelons to share at school.He did.But, he also brought scores of small wa-
termelons so all kinds of people got to takeone home.
The annual history fair aims to help pre-vent such memories from fading away.

According to Jason Boulnois, the coun-ty’s construction services manager, thelinear pond will provide additional treat-ment of the stormwater runoff by “allowingtime for water from the roadway to slowlymove from the entry point in the pond tothe outfall” in Lake Magdalene. He noted itwill “naturally treat and remove particles col-lected from the roadway.”
The entire system should have a 50-yearlife span, with proper periodic mainte-nance, Wiseman said.
Construction will take place on week-days between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Access tohomes will be maintained through construc-tion.
Officials say most of the constructionwill be in the right of way. However, it maybe necessary to work on private propertywith prior approval, and all areas affected bythe construction will be restored, they said.
Boulnois said one lane of traffic mightneed to close during construction whenworkers or equipment are present. Closureswill be between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Weather permitting, construction shouldbe complete within 90 days, he added.
The project is being funded through theStormwater Fee Capital ImprovementProgram. Additionally, the Southwest FloridaWater Management District is cooperativelyfunding the project at 50 percent.

Despite being the lead vocalist, Banaleswas initially hesitant about joining a band.
“One of the reasons I didn’t want to bein a band was because I don’t like having toget to know new people,” she said. But, shesaid her mom encouraged her, saying: “‘Doit. You’ll like it.”
So, Banales decided to give it a try anddiscovered she liked it.
“They’re all actually really cool,” she said,referring to her band mates.
Over time, the group has become closerthrough learning to communicate and ex-press opinions with one another.
Also helping the band’s development isChambers’ vast experience throughout themusic industry, which included stints atSony/BMG and VH1.
“I just show them how to navigate thatprocess...and manage them, like, ‘How doyou make a flyer, how do you use socialmedia,’” Chambers said. ... “It’s really ‘RecordLabel 101’ and ‘Band Management 101,’ too.”
“It’s good to have someone tell you whatyou’re doing wrong just because sometimeswe don’t notice...when it sounds bad or
off,” McHale said.According to Chambers, pitching a
young band to certain venues can be atough sell — until management witnessestheir talent and the ensuing crowds thegroup draws to their shows.
“It’s a big deal Skipper’s is allowing themto perform on a Friday night,” Chamberssaid, emphatically. “Often...you see a youngband and you’re like, ‘Okay, we’ve seen thisshow before.’ But, our bands kick (butt); it’slike, ‘Whoa, they’re quite good.’
“It’s a really tough pitch, but when youbring 300 people, they’re like, ‘Oh, he wasn’tkidding.’ I did that on a Sunday with them,”he said.
While the band was initially nervouswhen they first had to perform in front of alive audience, the group now has no prob-lem headlining on a big stage.
“When there’s a lot of people, I don’t getas nervous,” Banales said.
Dacus agreed, saying, “When you’rearound people you don’t know, it’s kind ofeasier.”
With youth and potential on their side,Extra Celestial has no plans of slowingdown anytime soon.
“I would love to do it professionally,”McHale said. “I don’t know if that’s whereit’s going to go, but I think that would bepretty cool. I’d love to do that.”

From Courtney Durbin to StephanieFrances, Sunlake softball coach NelsonGarcia has seen his fair share of power hit-ters in his five seasons at the school.
Perhaps none is more powerful than sen-ior catcher/third baseman Gianna Basilone,who leads all Tampa Bay area hitters withseven home runs, through 19 games. Onemore dinger and she’ll tie Sunlake’s single-season home run record set by SamanthaDittman in 2009. In addition to her homerun total, Basilone has 28 RBIs to go alongwith an eye-popping .448 batting average.
The senior’s performance, both at theplate and behind the plate, has led to ascholarship offer from Oklahoma StateUniversity, which is coached by KennyGajewski, a former assistant with the FloridaGators.
The Sunlake slugger is still waiting on afinancial package from the university beforeshe commits.
Coach Garcia called Basilone a “coach’sdream” because of work ethic, leadershipand, of course, on-field results.
“You get these certain players, I won’tsay every year, but you get these players, youcan’t replace them. They’re irreplaceable,”Garcia said. “Somebody can come in and saythey can hit eight home runs or nine homeruns, but it doesn’t replace these players. Aspeople, they’re awesome, and as teammatesand leaders. It’s the same thing with (former
players) Stephanie Francis or CourtneyDurbin.”
While Basilone has always been knownfor the pop her in her bat—she mashed sixhome runs last season—she’s become aneven more imposing slugger after Garcia im-plemented a team weight-training programin the offseason.
The program has helped Basilone getstronger and quicker — aspects that are im-perative for making an impact at theDivision I level.
“There’s always things I can like improveon,” said Basilone, who started attendingSunlake as a sophomore after moving fromPittsburgh. “It’s such a higher pace up in col-lege.”
As Basilone has filled up the stat sheet,some opposing teams have started to ap-proach her at-bats differently. Instead ofgiving her pitches to hit, teams have resortedto giving her a free pass to avoid facing her.
“After my first few at-bats, they try to finda weakness that I have. Or, some people just
walk me or hit me,” Basilone said.“There was one game (against Hudson
on Feb. 26) she had two home runs. ...I wassurprised they pitched to her the secondtime,” Garcia said, adding, “I wouldn’t havepitched to her.”
The strategy of avoiding Basilone’s batonly works so well, as Sunlake (13-7) fea-tures a lineup with seven everyday playersbatting over .350.
In his lineups, Garcia opts to place seniorCassidy Roberts (.435 batting average, 16RBIs) ahead of Basilone, and freshman sen-sation Shelby Lansing (.438. 20 RBIs) behindher in the lineup.
“I like to try to do to people what the(New York) Yankees used to do from a fewyears ago,” Garcia said. “I want (teams) to betired by the time they get through ourorder. Then we can go small ball.”
With a 7-3-district mark, the Seahawkshave aspirations of winning their district,and making a deep run into the postseason.
“I’ve told these girls from Day 1 whenwe started practicing that I’m very confi-dent that if we play our game, and staywithin ourselves, we can go out and com-pete against anybody out there,” Garcia said.
Basilone added this year’s team is “defi-nitely” the best one she’s been on in herthree seasons at Sunlake.
“All the girls that I’m playing with wantto go to college, and they all are here for areason,” she said. “They give their full ef-fort...and they’re just all really competitive.
“That’s how we all click, too.”

A former professional cyclist has createda weekend community cycling ride in DadeCity that welcomes riders of all skill levels.
The ride, organized by Josh and KaleighThornton, takes place each Saturday at 8a.m., at the parking lot next to 14112 EighthStreet in Dade City.
Rides are typically two hours long, withvarying paces, depending on each mem-ber’s skill level.
Thornton, a professional cyclist from2005 to 2009 and former member of theU.S. National Team, wanted to create a com-munity ride to promote the cycling industryand bike advocacy in the area.
He said there’s currently a core group of10 to 15 riders that have been showing upeach Saturday over the past few months.
“It’s a really good ride, because it truly isfor all skill levels,” Thornton, 37, said. “There’sother rides that are very fast and for veryskilled riders, and a lot of people are intimi-dated by that, so this is kind of neat becauseit’s for anyone. We wanted something thatreally started in Dade City; there was noth-ing like that.”
“There’s no cost. Just show up and go,and hopefully hang out and meet some newpeople,” he added.
Throughout the course of the two-hourride, the cyclists usually log about 30 miles,pedaling at an average pace of 13 mph to15 mph. However, some less-experiencedriders can opt to start out slow, and worktheir way up.
Thornton noted the group will typically
“head out toward thehills” and ride alongDarby Road. Othertimes, they’ll headnorth and hop on theWithlacoochee Trail.
“The roads thatwe pick are generallythe less-traveledroads. That’s generallyhow most cyclists tryto think,” he said. “Wedo have a couple dif-ferent routes thatwe’ve done.”
Instead of tryingto finish first, therides are more about enjoying the scenery,and getting in some early weekend exer-cise.
“We have a protective group; we’re look-ing out for the other riders,” Thornton said.“You ride differently when you’re thinkinglike that as opposed to where you’remuscling around with the guys, jockeyingfor position.”
While still a small group, Thornton hopesthe local rides will grow to the point wherethere can be multiple groups — like an A, Band C group —that can more closely matcheach rider’s skill level.
Although no longer a professional racer,Thornton is still very much involved in thecycling industry.
He operates a bike promotions andcoaching business called Wicked AwesomeRacing, and has also spawned a cyclo-crossracing series.
As opposed to a road race on pavement,
Thornton’s Wicked Awesome Racing Seriesevents are held on closed courses, like atStanley Park in Lacoochee.
According to Thornton, cyclo-cross iscurrently the fastest growing form of cy-cling.
“It’s a much different form of cycling,”said Thornton, who competed in both roadraces and closed-circuit races (criteriums) asa professional. “It’s almost like a minor stee-plechase kind of a race. It reminds me ofcross-country in high school. You have amodified road bike— a little bit wider tireswith knobs on them and the brakes aremore like a mountain bike style brake.”
“The cool part about it is it’s a seven- to
eight-minute loop, so you see the (racers)multiple times. It has this spectator-friendlyaspect to it that you really don’t get whenyou go to a road race,” he added.
With Pasco County’s rolling hills andvarying elevation points, the area offers anideal setting for the cyclo-cross races,Thornton said.
“I’m from New England originally, andpeople see photos of (the course) and theydon’t believe its Florida, because they thinkit’s flat as a pancake and there’s (only)beaches here,” he said.

C onstruction trailers once clut-tered the vacant lot on a hillyrise across from FloridaHospital Zephyrhills.
Now, a community garden is taking rootthere, as hospital employees, one by one,build garden beds that will sprout with veg-etables, flowers and herbs.
The Florida Hospital Zephyrhills CRE-ATION Health Community Garden sitsbehind a white picket fence, on Dairy Roaddirectly behind the hospital.
The garden is a complementary piece tothe hospital’s new CREATION HealthWellness Center.
The center offers gym memberships, per-sonal training, a Kid Zone play area, freecooking demonstrations, healthy lifestyleseminars and more.
“This is kind of tying it all together,” saidKelley Sasser, the hospital’s director ofprocess improvement.
Garden beds can be rented by anyone inthe community for $75 annually, with nocharge for the soil.
Some beds are built tall enough to ac-commodate gardeners with mobility issues.
Sasser and David Force, who works inthe same department as a specialist, are thegarden’s promoters.
Force brings gardening expertise to theproject; Sasser is a passionate cheerleader.
“We’ve taken the garden under ourwings,” Sasser said. “That is what (David) eatsand breathes.”
Force credits his grandmother with giv-ing him a love of gardening.
He grew up in Zephyrhills and DadeCity, but every summer he visited his grand-mother who could coax plants to grow inthe worst of conditions.
“She always had a garden,” he said. “Thiswas in north Florida in the middle of sand.”
It was a happy time, he said. “That’s someof my best memories.”
Initially, Force wanted to create a gardenfor hospital volunteers.
“The hospital thought that was a goodidea but wanted to go further,” Force added.
It took nearly three years from merelyhaving an idea to actually digging in the dirt,but on March 16, the first of 70 garden bedswere nailed together and filled with fertilesoil.
Force has about 500 plants growing in asmall greenhouse, from seeds donated byLowe’s home improvement store inZephyrhills.
Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, zucchini,squash, lavender and cilantro are among theplants ready to sprout. Ultimately, thesefresh veggies and herbs could find their wayto the hospital’s cafeteria or into a cookingdemo at the wellness center.
One long-range goal is to have enoughcommunity involvement that a farmer’s mar-ket might be held once a month, Force said.
Or, maybe a cooperative, he added,“which would be wonderful.”
At the mid-March kickoff, hospital em-ployees walked over throughout themorning and into the lunch hour, to helpwith the gardening tasks.
Several volunteers sported T-shirts withthe message, “Doing Good in theNeighborhood.”
Florida Hospital Zephyrhills is the onlyhospital in the area with a community gar-den. As one of 45 hospitals in the AdventistHealth System, it is the second hospital inthe system to start a community garden. Thefirst started at an Adventist Hospital in CastleRock, Colorado.
A gazebo, garden shedand a small greenhouse areon-site. Walkways and land-scaping give the 2-acregarden a tranquil, invitingambiance.
Aquaponics, an educa-tion pavilion, a butterflygarden and a small orchardwill be added during thesecond phase.
Benches also will beplaced throughout the gar-den, which now is dottedwith red and yellow hibis-cus in ceramic planters.
The garden also nur-tures the spirit.

“My big thing is teaching the next gener-ation to do sustained gardening, and toknow where their food comes from,” saidForbes-Thorne, the hospital’s rehabilitationdirector. “I see how real this is. This is goldright here.”
