THE PROBLEM FACED BY SMALL BUSINESS
Small businesses are the backbone of the US economy. 99.9% of businesses are small in the US. They employ 58.9 million people and generate over $420 billion in exports annually.
But 1 in 2 small businesses in the US fail within 5 years. This results in lost jobs, lost income for households, lost dignity and higher risk of personal, family and community breakdown.
Greater knowledge and data is the key to small business success. Unlike large corporations, most small businesses lack the resources needed to access and use a range of data that can help them make better business decisions.
THE PROBLEM FACED BY MUNICIPALITIES
Economic development is increasingly important to municipalities. Today, some element of economic development is present in virtually every city, town and village in North America. In the US there are over 40,000 municipalities alone.
Municipalities can drive economic development by helping small businesses. Studies have consistently shown that supporting the growth of emerging and existing small businesses produce the majority of economic growth in US communities.
The internet is the most powerful economic development tool. Unfortunately most municipalities lack the resources to harness the internet to help businesses ask better questions, understand their market, avoid costly mistakes and create a more resilient and successful local businesses.
A huge opportunity exists to help the 40,000 municipalities across the US drive local economic development and support small business growth.

TESTIMONIALSRochelle Freeman, Business & Economic Development Director, City of Southfield MI
“My office was not able to meet these needs adequately prior to our entering into a relationship with Localintel. Additionally, Southfield is able to assist clients 24/7 via the Localintel tools, enabling businesses access to information when they want it rather than being limited to our business hours. We have received very positive feedback from our local partners including the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, Oakland County Economic Development and Southfield Area Chamber of Commerce. They are featuring our community’s economic development tools in their presentations to new businesses and entrepreneurs when working with them to showcase how to find the correct resources and information needed for effective business plans and expand marketing efforts.”
Brian Surratt, Director of the Office of Economic Development, City of Seattle WA
“Data is only useful if it is easily accessible. That’s why I’m so excited about the Business Decision Engine (the name given to Localintel’s tools by
Seattle). Through a beautiful and engaging interface, entrepreneurs will have access to volumes of City and partner agency data that together can help business owners make choices about where and how they do business in Seattle. Before the Business Decision Engine, people had to search several agencies, and even if they found the right data, they may not have had the context to make it useful. Now, all the most important information is in one place and easily digestible for anyone.”
Kathy Henderson, Director Economic Development, Carbon County PA
“I was contacted by one of our local tv news reporters who is doing a story on the unemployment rate here in Carbon County. I was able to use the new data provided in the tools to showcase in their story. They also used the graphs as a visual.”
Jon Allan, Economic Development Officer, Town of Sundre, AB
“The Town of Sundre uses Localintel’s interactive economic development tools to help recruit and promote new businesses. Being able to provide a biomedical industrial investor with legitimate information about the regional workforce via Localintel’s tools was a catalyst in helping secure their $10 million investment.”
