Defining Culture

Across the breadth of the course we have approached culture from a number of

unique frameworks. We have classified and contrasted cultures by reviewing culture

lrom holistic, qualitative and vatue-based theories. The holistic view is often one of the

most talked about yet least defined vyays to approach culture. lt is the acknowledgment

of an entire system of beliefs that shape not only the conscious self and those parts of

human character that are most easily described (such as food and drink) but also from a

subconscious one. Culture becomes a quintessential part of the individual under this

vague and all-encompassing standard. Hofstadter generally approaches cultures

through this framework, inferring that the birth and base upon which a culture is built is

language. He inadvertently defines culture through his experiences in France and other

foreign nations while acknowledging that, if language is the primary unit or morpheme of

culture, one can never fully understand a culture unless one has been born into it.

Hofstede and Trompenaars approach culture from qualitative and value-based

frameworks. Hofstede uses a few key attributes such as power distance and masculinity

versus femininity. He produces multiple measurements by which to classify a culture

using large arnounts of collected data. Though his framework is slightly simplistic, each

measure approaches important differences between cultures in such a way that can be

referenced and utilized by scholars or businessmen at a tater time. Trompenaars

approaches culture through yet another avenue: value-based judgment. He uses more

measures than Hofstede, and classifies a cultural individual not by the way they act or

view life directly, but in how that viewpoint effects their generalvalue-system. Valuing

time synchronically or sequentially, or oneself as an individual or a member of a group

are two important ways he defines culture.

All three aforementioned viewpoints are correct and yet they are entirely too

broad or narrow. Hofstadter's framework is overly vague. Using his understanding of

culture may be helpful to him or a passionate academic but would prove useless to a

businessman needing to work in a foreign country. By lacking a functionalframework,

one may deem his ideas of culture to be almost superfluous. Both Hofstede and

Trompenaars share a burdensome yoke opposite of Hofstadter's. They have classified

cutture from exceedingly narrow perspectives. While Trompenaars is able to express a

culture's behavioral leaning through a formidable value-system, he lack's some ol the

spark that characterizes Hofstadter's ideology. A truly requisite definition of culture

should be arrived at through a merger of allthree theories. Culture is an important

building block for an individual and connotes a key basis upon which the individual is

built. Culture is also something that can be measured but only in how we express it to

others. Yet it also has merit from a strictly emotive perspective and is something we feel

and interact with daily. I define culture as a filter with different screens. The individual

filters his or her environment through course cultural, medium familial, and fine

individual screens. He or she then acts on the result of this filtration by engaging the

medium it has produced and pushing it back out into the environment through a

behavioral screen that works in the reverse of the individual one. By acknowledging the

clear behavioral and individual implications of a culture one can maintain a functional
