The Linz Top Ten www.linztourismus.at/en
Linzer TorteThe sweet ambassador. The earliest recipe dates from the year 1653, making it the oldest cake recipe in the world – a mixture of exotic spices and the art of Upper Austrian baking!
Schlossmuseum and the Old TownThe Old Town of Linz, with its shops and pubs, is a wonderful place to relax. The most eye-catch-ing feature of the historical centre is Austria’s largest universal museum in the Linzer Schloss, which presents exhibitions on nature and tech-nology, and much more. Unforgettable: the view from the terrace over the city’s rooftops.
Danube & BrucknerhausThroughout the year, the banks of the Danube are a hotspot for relaxation, art and culture. The Danube parks become a stage in the sum-mer months, time and again. Linz’s concert hall named after the great composer and organist Anton Bruckner inspires musicians and visitors alike with premium-class acoustics and a diverse programme.
Ars Electronica CenterThis museum of the future and technology with its interactive adventure world has an illuminated facade, which is visible far and wide, and houses exciting exhibitions on the integration of digital art and technology into our everyday lives.
MariendomOn the one hand, the New Cathedral is the largest church in Austria, and on the other, a haven of peace at the heart of the city, which invites you to pause and take time to think – something that is also symbolised by the Turmeremiten, or tower hermits.
Musiktheater am VolksgartenThe most modern opera house in Europe opened its doors for the first time in April 2013 and since then, has been one of the cultural highlights in the UNESCO City of Media Arts. With the Schauspielhaus and the Kammerspiele an der Promenade as well as the u\hof: Theater für Junges Publikum, the OÖ Landestheater has four venues.
Pöstlingberg Adventure WorldOne of the emblems of the city. The striking pilgrimage basilica crowns Linz picturesquely, easily accessible via the steepest adhesion rail-way on the continent. The panoramic terrace offers a magnificent view of Linz.
Lentos Kunstmuseum LinzThe museum of contemporary art houses one of the best art collections in Austria, with great names like Klimt, Kokoschka and Schiele.
Hauptplatz and Linzer CityWith its baroque facades and the Trinity Col-umn, the largest urban square in Europe is the ideal starting point for a city stroll with shop-ping along Landstraße and into Linzer City.
voestalpine StahlweltAn interactive, multimedia adventure world on the theme of steel. A walk-in work of art as a meeting point between technology and the human being.

THE STATION DISTRICT WITH A FACELIFTThere has hardly been another district that has undergone such a transformation in recent years and it all started with the new main railway station and the 98-metre high Terminal Tower, followed by the Regional Service Centre, the corporate headquarters of Energy AG and the Knowledge Tower. With the new music theatre the district around the Volksgarten got another architectural, cultural boost.
CATHEDRAL SQUARE OF CONTRASTSApparent opposites in peaceful harmony: the neo-Gothic St. Mary’s Cathedral is the largest church in Austria. The solitaire of a four-star hotel was placed to the side of it, as part of the architectural re-structuring of the square and its concrete skeleton corresponds with the striking facade of the cathedral. Two existing buildings renovated complete the ensemble on Herrenstrasse.
LARGE MAIN SQUARECovering 13,000 m2, the main square, created in 1230, is one of the largest urban squares in Austria. Traces of contemporary archi-tecture can be seen in the historical setting and can be found for example, in the subtly converted Spängler bank building. Memories of a darker chapter in history live on in the Brückenkopf building built in the Nazi era and bordering the square towards the Danube. Since 1947 the Linz Art University is established in the west build-ing and, due to future renovation, expands to the east building. The Old town hall – still the seat of the mayor of Linz – houses the Tour-ist Information office.
THE SPARKLING CULTURAL MILEThe bright Cultural Mile on the left and right of the Danube stamps its mark with architectural highlights and evening illuminations: the glass frame of the Museum of Modern Art on the city-side bank of the Danube, the extended Ars Electronica Center on the Urfahr side. The new south wing of the Linz Castle with a glass walkway on the Schlossberg as well as the in 2015 realised new construction of the Anton Bruckner Private University at Pöstlingberg, blend into the pic-ture. With the Brucknerhaus built in the 1970s, the culture mile along the Danube Park can certainly boast high-profile classic inter-national post-war modernity. Large scale metal sculptures character-ise the city-side bank of the Danube – a cross section of the 1960’s and 1970’s abstract metal plastics constructed by the forum metall. Due to this artificial drumbeat Linz became focus of the international art world in 1977. An important step in the development from an industrial city towards a city of culture.
RESOURCE-CONSCIOUS SOLARCITYThe international showcase for sustainable urban development was built entirely using low-energy construction. The architectural plan-ning of the area that provides living space to about 3,000 people comes essentially from Roland Rainer, with the overall energy / archi-tectural concept coming from the READ Group (Norman Foster, Rich-ard Rogers and Thomas Herzog). The dwellings in SolarCity are built in different forms of the solar design system and even the pastoral centre is fitted with the latest solar technology.
VISIONARY TOBACCO FACTORYThe tobacco factory built in 1929-35 on the design by Peter Behrens and Alexander Popp was the first large steel-framed building in Austria. The reconstruction and extension commissioned by the then tobacco monopoly (on this site since 1850) ranks among the great interna-tional achievements of industrial architecture. After the closure of the production facility in 2009, the listed ensemble was purchased by the city of Linz, interim and further use processes are underway such as cultural and (creative) industrial usage. The VALIE EXPORT CENTER, a research centre for media and performance art is going to be established at the tobacco factory.
VOESTALPINE THE PIONEERvoestalpine AG, one of Europe’s major steel producers, has had a huge impact in terms of shaping the economic history and the city. The concern, founded in 1938 as the Hermann-Göring-Works was renamed the United Austrian Iron and Steel Works (VÖEST) in 1945 and 1949 saw the development there of a revolutionary technology in steel production using the LD steel production process. Nowadays voestalpine AG is one of the cleanest steel plants in Europe. The visi-tor centre voestalpine World of Steel is part of an overall architectural concept around the company headquarters.
No other Austrian city has changed as much as Linz in the last 100 years, while at the same time preserving its identity. While the Second World War, the success as a business location and the year as European Capital of Culture may have shaped the city, they have in no way reduced the quality of life – more than 50 % green areas. The tobacco factory by Peter Behrens / Alexander Popp, the Solar City residential project, the award-winning station district and cultural buildings along the Danube are the areas where the change is really noticeable. So come and see. Discover old and new buildings and take a look at the changes in Linz.

Linz City Walking TourAustria Guides are the city’s insiders and
invite you on an entertaining journey
through time: You can discover stories of
change, perspectives for the future, and
experiences of the latest city events on
the 1.5-hour walking tour.
Change of genreThe theatre and music scene in Linz
is diverse. We recommend a change of
genre. Why not the Posthof instead of
Brucknerhaus for once, or vice versa?
Why not see a play that is full of sur-
prises? Openness to modern art and
culture has the potential to provide new
experiences.
The city of short distances Take the bus or the tram for once, instead
of travelling by car. New perspectives on
the city will be opened up, and you’ll get
to know the people of Linz!
Taste experienceHave you ever been to a Thai, Indian,
Mongolian or Japanese restaurant? Yes?
Then try out the Upper Austrian cuisine
with pub tapas or breakfast tapas, which
allow you to widen your tastes. Try some-
thing new, be curious – Linz is the best
place for that.
Turn a fresh pageLinz’s bookshops, libraries, the Upper
Austrian Literature Museum, and the
exhibition catalogues in Linz’s museums
Our tips for a change in Linz.
In Linz, change is fundamental. The Danube’s change of course gave the city its name: Lentos, Celtic for curved, bending, from
which the Roman fort Lentia derives. Progress and change shape the interplay of history, present and future, which can be felt
here in the culture, quality of life and business. It is a positive change experienced by visitors and locals alike.
Allow yourself to be surprised and take the effect of the meandering river home with you.
5
will motivate you to change. A new book
provides impulses and broadens your
horizons. Books about Linz allow you to
immerse yourself in Linz’s history and
present!
Styling à la LinzThe Linz hairdressers, and the fashion-
able clothes and shoe shops help you to
change your appearance.
A view of LinzLook at the city from a new perspective: A
city tour on the Danube to Linz’s harbour
or one of the many viewpoints make these
new insights possible. Franz-Josef-Warte,
Pöstlingberg, the banks of the Danube in
Alt-Urfahr, Wissensturm, Sonnenprom-
enade along the Aloisianum, voestalpine
Stahlwelt – from here, there are views of
the various districts.
RelaxA city trip is full of impressions and often
includes long walks. So it sometimes
does good to have a rest and enjoy some
peace and quiet. Linz offers not only
diverse nature within the city, but is also
an Audio City – here, value is placed on a
responsible attitude to noise. Noise bom-
bardment free areas e.g. hotels, restau-
rants and Linz’s numerous churches offer
rest for your ears and your soul.
6
A green cityIt is not only in the fantastically main-
tained Old Town that the legendary green
city’s connection to its long history is
expressed. Even so, Linz looks to the
future – and discovers a zest for life in
the here and now.
Be curiousThis city entices you to be curious, to
discover and try new things, and to relax
and slow down. Culture is inspirational,
allows you to recognise connections and
to pause and reflect, for a fulfilled life.
Culture – nature – business: a triad for Linz
In Linz, you’ll find the most modern music theatre in Europe
and a vibrant contemporary culture scene as well as a thriving
economy with leading global companies.
8
WORLD-CLASS ART BY THE DANUBEThe Donaupark in Linz, with its build-
ings and sculptures, allows you to follow
the trail of world-famous artists of the
Bauhaus school and modern architecture.
Here, you’ll encounter the works of greats
like Herbert Bayer, Günther Uecker, Erwin
Reiter, David Rabinowitch and many more.
LENTOS Kunstmuseum Linz is the starting
point for this exploration. forum metall was
founded in 1977 by Helmuth Gsöllpoint-
ner, then a professor at the Linz University
of Arts and Industrial Design, and Peter
Baum, at that time the head of the Neue
Galerie der Stadt Linz. The aim was to
connect art and business, and to point to
Linz’s significant role as an industrial loca-
tion and an up-and-coming art metropo-
lis. Tours are now offered from LENTOS
Kunstmuseum.
UNESCO City of Media ArtsThe city’s designation as a UNESCO City of Media Arts at the end of 2014 shows
that Linz, together with Lyon, Sapporo, Tel Aviv and Dakar, is one of the world’s most
future-orientated locations. In Linz, the focus is on the media arts centre around Ars
Electronica, with its internationally renowned Prix Ars Electronica, which is always
awarded in September, with Ars Electronica Center, a museum of the future, and
with the Futurelab and A/E/C Solutions, the research and development facilities. In
addition, active, creative development in the area of industry and business as well as
creative talent in Linz are promoted.
The harbour galleryIn the UNESCO City of Media Arts, you’ll
find the world’s largest connected outdoor
gallery. You can currently admire around
200 pictures on the facades of the
harbour buildings. The paintings (some
of which are oversized) by international
spray-paint artists and graffiti artists from
20 countries come into being as part of
Bubble Days, which takes place in June
every year and transforms Linz’s harbour
into a festival space. The best place from
which to admire the artwork is on the
water – during a harbour tour or one of
the Mural Harbor guided tours available
from 2016.

Tabakfabrik LinzThe sparks from ideas rather than cigarettes now fire productivity in
Tabakfabrik Linz. The industrial jewel in the style of the New Objectiv-
ity is gradually becoming a focal point for cultural and creative indus-
tries developing new technologies and innovative forms of cooperation.
As the pulsating heart of a new area of urban development not far
from the Danube harbour, the approx. 80,000 m² Tabakfabrik offers a
multifaceted series of events and a colourful collection of design shops,
galleries, ateliers, trendy cafes and craftsmanship. Around 340 people
already work here – more than were working in the tobacco factory
before it closed.
The spectrum extends from agencies to cultural associations, media
laboratories and creative start-ups. As the last large industrial construc-
tion of the renowned architect Peter Behrens, Tabakfabrik Linz is one
of the most innovative buildings of international modernity in Austria.
www.tabakfabrik-linz.at
Valie Export (Center)The pioneer of conceptual media art,
performance art and cinematics is a
native of Linz. As part of Linz’s designa-
tion as a UNESCO City of Media Arts, the
Valie Export Center is being established in
the Tabakfabrik, where the artist’s legacy
will be prepared for the public and for
research purposes.
Innovation – universities – businessWith regard to its citizens, the city probably has the most world market leaders. There
are hardly any railway lines in the world that do not use technology from Linz, every
second car in Europe was built from voestalpine steel, super sports cars are driven by
gear components from Linz, and the latest generation of plastics makes life easier – in
almost all industrial sectors there is a strong piece of Linz’s innovation. The city’s loca-
tion by the Danube certainly plays a decisive role here. It all began with the shipping
industry and the horse-drawn railway, which made Linz a trading venue, followed by the
only shipyard by the Danube and the best steelworks in the world, voestalpine. There
are seven universities and universities of applied sciences with various faculties rang-
ing from medicine to technology, economics, health, law, education and theology.

The most modern music theatre in Europe
Europe’s most modern opera house offers
a repertoire ranging from opera/operetta
to ballet and the later genre of musicals,
with its own company. The drama is
presented in the buildings on the Prom-
enade, Schauspielhaus and Kammer-
spiele, with a focus on children’s/youth
theatre. The selection and staging of the
plays is oriented towards modern tastes
in art and culture in Linz and Upper
Austria. New productions of classics can
be viewed here, as well as completely new
pieces written or composed, staged using
multimedia with exciting scenery.
The British architect Terry Pawson
gave the building the form of a stage

THE DANUBE& BOAT TRIPS
Nowhere does the Danube flow more
colourfully than in Linz. The Danube’s
change of course gave the city its
name: Lentos, or Lentia, and the
Danube always was and remains a
hub and pivotal point for Linz. After
all, it flows right through the centre
and is the source of life and progress.
Europe’s main artery is also the centre
of history and culture here.

An experience for all your senses – Linz.change(d) AdventAt the most peaceful time of the year, you can experience the reflective side of the otherwise pulsat-ing Creative City. There are traditional Christmas markets as well as trendy Advent locations. From mid-November, the atmospheric Advent markets enchant visitors and locals alike.
Information at: www.linztourismus.at/christmas
17
At the Christkindlmarkt on Linz’s Haupt-platz in the romantic baroque ambience
of the Old Town, you can taste typical
regional delicacies like Bauernkrapfen,
or farmers’ doughnuts, Kletzenbrot, a
traditional fruit bread, and Bratwurst from
a charcoal grill, and can find the finest
handicrafts at the beautifully illuminated
stalls. At the Christmas market in the Volksgarten, families and craftsmanship
lovers immerse themselves in a Christmas
fairy-tale world opposite the Musiktheater.
Linz also hopes to inspire you to try new
things – for example, to visit a noise bom-
bardment free, sustainable winter market
on Pfarrplatz or a Christmas factory in
the Tabakfabrik. Musica sacra concerts in
Linz’s churches entice you to take some
time out from the hustle and bustle of
Christmas, and Ars Electronica Center
takes you off into the endless expanses
of the universe in Deep Space. Creative
Christmas markets, sparkling evening
boat trips with music and dinner, ice skat-
ing in the city centre, Christmas concert
festivals and festive theatre make the wait
for the Christmas period a pleasurable
and exciting time.
FOOD FOR THOuGHT:
As part of Linz.change(d), increasingly
more associations and companies are
escaping the hectic time before Christmas
and instead, celebrating with cuisine and
culture at the beginning of the new year.

Shopping in Linzer City and in Austria’s
second-largest shopping street – Land-
straße – is a truly pleasurable experience
every time. But what makes shopping in
the city such a pleasure?
Cities have also always been market-
places. The “also” is important, since
they are far more than just collections
of shops. In contrast to shopping malls
outside the city, which make a real effort
to create the added value that is part of
a city’s nature, in addition to the malls’
high concentration of shops. This atmo-
sphere is formed from the connection
with the people who live here and who do
not only spend time here to go shopping.
It is the multidimensional nature of city
life manifested in a small space: living,
working, learning, visiting a doctor or
lawyer, exercise, encounters, and cultural,
political and spiritual life.

Diversity instead of monocultureThe city is a communal, shared space – a
place of diversity. What is it that creates
this lively, authentic atmosphere that
gives the city centre its special aura?
A park with green areas and benches
beneath old, tall trees in front of, next to,
or at the heart of historical and modern
buildings will always be different from a
seating area under fireresistant plastic
trees or pot plants in the sterile shine of
LED spotlights.
Sun, wind and weather It may sound banal, but an essential
difference between an urban space and
a shopping centre is the presence or
absence of sun, wind and weather. The
presence of these aspects improves your
shopping experience. The shops and coffee
houses become cosier and more attractive
when it is chilly outside. A warming drink
in Advent is only really a pleasure in the
winter cold. On the other hand, an ice
cream or a refreshing drink in the garden
of a cafe or restaurant is truly invigorating
on a hot summer’s day.
LiNzSHOPPiNGNiGHtSFor the long shopping nights in May and September, Linzer City always has a special motto. www.linzer-city.at

Linz History city mapA city map focused on the city’s history
is available free of charge in Tourist
Information Linz on Hauptplatz, and can
be sent in advance and free of charge to
groups visiting the city.
Since the Danube came into being, then
later the Celtic settlement LENTOS and
the Roman fort LENTIA, which gave
Linz its name, the city has experienced
continuous development and has been
inextricably linked to the river and
the history of Europe. The name Linz
originally meant the curve in the river, or
where it changes its course – which suits
the city’s development, shaped by change
and still dedicated to a forward-looking
approach and innovation today. From
the medieval trading city and stopover
destination on the route to Vienna, where
emperors and kings, bishops, artists and
traders met, a space for creatives, busi-
ness and art has developed.
The Danube is also a river of destiny.
The Roman Empire reached right up to
its banks, which the Romans developed
as the Danube limes, a fortified border
against the Germanic peoples. Napoleon
also used the Danube for his conquests
through Europe. The river finally became
the symbol of the Imperial & Royal Habs-
burg Monarchy.
Traces of historyFrom “Linz by the sea” via the Celts, Romans and Habsburgs, through to modern
times: Linz’s history has been closely linked to the Danube over millennia.
4th millennium BC: First settle-
ment, proven by grave finds from
the Hallstatt period on the voestal-
pine premises
41: Linz (Roman Lentia)
becomes a military settle-
ment on the Danube border.
799: First documentary
evidence of Linz (from
the Celtic Lentos)
Around 1000: A
castle is erected on
Schlossberg.
1382: First fair in Linz, on
the feast of St. Bartholomew
(24 August) and at Easter
1489: Linz becomes the capital of Upper Aus-
tria. Emperor Frederick III resided in Linz until
1493, making Linz the most important city of
the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation.
1497: The first Danube bridge is built.
Today, the Nibelungenbrücke is located
on this site (constructed 1938–1940).
As time goes by
1784: Linz is declared
an autonomous diocese.
1521: Wedding of Archduke Ferdi-
nand of Austria to Anna of Bohemia
and Hungary in Linz

Linz’s involvement in the Civil War of
1934 and the Nazi period (1938–1945)
has left its stamp on the city up to the
present day. Following the Anschluss
(annexation) of Austria, which Adolf Hitler
announced here, Linz was, as the protégé
city of the Führer, the favoured object
of Nazi urban and economic planning
measures.
The rapid expansion of the city was driven
by the incorporation of smaller municipal-
ities into bigger ones, and by the forced
labour of thousands of foreign workers.
This was what made possible the con-
struction of large industrial sites like
Reichswerke Hermann Göring, which
primarily served the purpose of armament
for war. In and around Linz, educational
and memorial sites are reminders of those
dark times.
The region is intensively concerned with
the process of examining and coming to
terms with the past. Scientific publica-
tions, memorials, symposia and cultural
projects like Friedensstadt Linz – Linz, City
of Peace – represent an injunction to not
forget and to try to learn from the past.

People are the focusIn recent years, conferences have become “greener” and thereby more sustainable. However, the human aspect has unfortu-
nately suffered a little. As the logical development of green events, Blue Meeting® focuses on people and the environment.
As concerns meetings, this means that the general and individual needs of people are given more attention than previously.
Blue Meeting® is a Linz invention. Developed by Linz Tourismus, it takes up the “Blue Architecture” concept of sustainable
construction and advances it further for events.
