"Nutrition & Kids”Presents some...
Scary Statistics• 25% school-age kids are overweight
and 12.5% are obese.• 50% of obese kids over 6 become
obese adults.• 70%-80% of obese adolescents
become obese adults.• 77% of Californians are out of
shape.
Linda Kempster, CTW 3
Price of Obesity• The costs of childhood obesity more
than tripled in the last 20 years to $127 million.
• Obesity is a recognized killer but insurance will very rarely cover any costs associated with its’ treatment.– Only the cost of related medical conditions
are covered.
Linda Kempster, CTW 4
Price of Complacency• If we do not reverse the trend, health costs
will be astronomical.– St. Paul Star-Tribune, 4/18/02
• The epidemic of obesity is resulting in obese adults and hurting kids down to the age of 5.
• More overweight kids are going into hospitals for diabetes (including Type 2), sleep apnea, asthma, hypertension and high blood pressure.
Linda Kempster, CTW 5
Faces of the Enemy• Increased intake of unhealthy food
– Super-sized portions lead to super-sized kids with super-sized problems.
• Decreased physical activity– Video, computer games and TV have
replaced bikes, jump-ropes and skates.– School athletic programs have been
cancelled.
Linda Kempster, CTW 6
Enemy Encampments• School cafeterias serve food higher in fat
and lower in nutrition than in the past.• On-site selections have been
supplemented by the mall-type food courts populated by popular fast food establishments.
• Soda and candy is conveniently available from vending machines.
Linda Kempster, CTW 7
Lifetime POWs• Kids follow the example set by
adults– Those raised with healthy eating
habits will have them for life.
• Taste buds can be programmed away from sweet, salty or greasy foods.
Linda Kempster, CTW 8
Killer Food Rewards• Kids who are rewarded with
special foods and treats choose those over more healthy alternatives. – Carrot cake is really not healthy– French fries are really not a
vegetable.
Linda Kempster, CTW 9
Paying for not Playing• Activity programs need to be reinstated
in the schools. • Adults need to control the time kids
spend in sedentary activities.• Parents should try to participate with
their kids in biking, walking, hiking, swimming, etc. to increase interest.
Linda Kempster, CTW 10
The Frightening Future• Fallacy: Survey released ranked
AIDS, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and then obesity as a “serious concerns”.
• Truth: Obesity kills more people than AIDS and often underlies heart disease and diabetes.
Linda Kempster, CTW 11
Arm Your Kids for Battle
• Teach them about the right foods.• Have fun eating a variety of fruits
and vegetables with them.• Help them learn to pack their own
lunch.• Find a “fit friend” to partner with
for walks and outdoor activities.
Linda Kempster, CTW 12
You are Not Alone• A study in Glasgow found 9 out of 10
parents are happy to take kids for fast food even though they know it is bad for them because it is full of fat.
• Scottish parents are restricting outdoor play for fear of crime and are not letting kids walk to school.
Linda Kempster, CTW 13
Adults not Immune• Public education needs to increase
about the dangers of obesity.• 25% of Americans are obese and 60%
are overweight.• Of 900 adults surveyed, 50% were
overweight but only 25% felt it was a problem.
• Only 33% feel obesity is a serious issue.
Linda Kempster, CTW 14
The Key to Success• The best tactic is to focus on the
young and educate them early in the benefits of the rights foods and the proper exercise.
Linda Kempster, CTW 15
You are in Control• Invest some time learning how to
make the right choices.• Help kids recognize if they are
surrounded by poor examples.
Linda Kempster, CTW 16
You can Shape Your Kids’ Future
• Let the kids pick the condition they want to be in
• Establish health goals• Prepare a gradual plan that can be
followed • Plan to succeed
Linda Kempster, CTW 17
How to Save Lives• Reduce the reliance on empty
foods.• Protect your heart by eating right.• Plan to avoid diabetes, heart
trouble and arthritis by managing your weight.
• Learn more about good foods.
Linda Kempster, CTW 18
The Life Saving Messagefor Kids
• Exercise more– Play while you can - adulthood will
take that away soon enough and you’ll long to be told to go outside and play!
• Eat right– Learn what good foods can do for you
and how the wrong ones hurt you.
Linda Kempster, CTW 19
The First Step• Begin using the Nutrition and Kids
game to learn about choices.• Inform Scout leaders, club
organizers, teachers in school and at church to use it for fundraising instead of foods that are bad for toddlers, teens and adults.
