The Daily Office lectionary has, for the last 36 days (August 20-September 17), included readings from the book of Job – all 42 chapters.On some days, this does require the patience attributed to this Biblicalhero. All that eloquent poetry can be heavy going; but it’s extremelyworthwhile.

You know the story: Job, a godly man who has prospered in every way, issuddenly stripped of almost everything to prove a point to Satan, theprosecuting angel. God gives Satan permission to take away Job’slivestock, crops, and even his children to test Job’s faith and to cause himto curse God.

Phillip Bass joins Nativity for the next fewmonths as an intern discerning a call to thepriesthood. Phillip will be joining in on Zoomcalls, participating in worship, and being a partof the community as we help him learn moreabout his call and prepare for his next stepstowards ordination.

We are excited to offer another Formation opportunity at Church ofthe Nativity.

The Christian Essentials curriculum is a holistic approach to exploring,growing, and deepening your relationships with God, neighbor, world,and self.

Christ Church Charlotte developed and curated the Christian Essentialscurriculum to help people of all ages live a Christ-centered life. Thesesessions are broken up into three modules: Love God, Care for EachOther, and Serve the World.

Each module is covered over 6 weeks, with weekly 90-minute sessions.The Zoom sessions are very interactive and a lot of fun! Groups are keptsmall, around 8-10 people hosted by 2 facilitators. Meeting times will beset after considering everyone's schedule. The sessions require minimalpreparation and if you miss a meeting, you can catch up!

Our plan is to start with a beta-test for the first module, Love God. TheIntroduction meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 29 from 7:00-8:30 pm.

Becoming Beloved Community Book ClubWednesday, October 14, 2020, 7pm on Zoom

Join us for October's book club centering on social justice, race, andbecoming beloved community. This month's selection is The Little Book ofRestorative Justice: Revised and Updated by Howard Zehr.

With over 150,000 copies of this book sold, author Howard Zehr isconsidered the father of Restorative Justice and is known worldwide for hispioneering work in transforming our understanding of justice. RestorativeJustice, with its emphasis on identifying the justice needs of everyoneinvolved in a crime, is a worldwide movement of growing influence that ishelping victims and communities heal, while holding criminals accountablefor their actions.

Books are available for sale here. Unfortunately this one is not available atthe Wake County Library. Zoom link will be provided before the meeting inthe Glad Tidings newsletter and email.

Youth and Families

Youth Formation

EYCThis fall, youth will be exploring Formation in a new way. Through videoconversations, activities, and small groups, our focus will be allowing theyouth to start defining their faith and what it means to be the church. Insteadof "Sunday School", Formation, or "Rooted", we call it "Episcopal YouthCommunity" or EYC. This fall there will be three series of 4-week sessionsheld on Sunday evenings. September will be virtual, but we will hopefullymove to some in-person gatherings in October.

Youth GroupVirtual kick-off is Sunday, September 20. Youth Group provides anopportunity for youth to be a little more active with the church while at home.We will play games, participate in challenges, and talk about what is goingon in the world.

Children's Formation

Kids' ClubWe will gather virtually on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month from 4-4:30.Parents will need to pick up supplies for each month at church. More detailswill be emailed out.

Backyard Bible StudyThis is a way for kids to be in nature - taking a walk, relaxing in a hammockor playing in the sandbox - while we talk about some fun Bible stories overZoom. No Bibles required!

SocialsThese will occur once each month to allow the kids some time to be sillyand get to know each other (and Kathryn). Each will be themed and willhave fun games and activities. Make sure you are on the email list!

Outreach

Rise Against Hunger Update

Earlier this year the Outreach ministry team paid $3,452 for our 8th annualRise Against Hunger (RAH) meal-packaging event optimistically thinkingwe'd be able to have the event in Corlett Hall on the last Sunday of August!With the different COVID restrictions, we could not.

RAH stepped up and changed their warehouse operations to include anarea with tables and COVID-safe protocol. This allowed 15 members ofNativity's community to gather (socially distanced) to package about two-thousand meals in a little over one hour.

Thank you to the seven families who participated and helped RAH getcloser to their goal of ending world hunger by the year 2030. Our donationand meals will enable communities around the globe to rise and break thecycle of poverty! See photos below of our Nativity volunteers in action.
