Lead Teaching Artist and Project Facilitator HiddenLives,IlluminatedEasternStatePenitentiaryHistoricSite,PhiladelphiaTheProject:EasternStatePenitentiaryHistoricSite(“ESPHS”)isdevelopinganewproject:HiddenLives,Illuminated.ItwillofferararelookintodailylifeinsideAmerica’scorrectionalsystemthroughnewlycommissioned,animatedshortfilms,createdbyartistslivingorworkinginsideprisons.Thesefilmswillbeprojectedontothepenitentiary’sdramatic,30-footfacadeforonemonthinthefallof2019,accompaniedbyasoundtrackthatviewerscandownloadtotheirsmartphones.

Concurrentprogramshostedbycommunityambassadorswillfosterpublicconversationaroundsocialandcriminaljusticeissues.AshortdocumentaryaboutthecreationofthefilmswilllaterbeonviewforfutureESPHSvisitors.HiddenLives,IlluminatedispartoftheESPHS’snewstrategicvisionforthehistoricsite.MajorfundingforHiddenLiveshasbeenprovidedbythePewCenterforArtsandHeritage.JobDescription:TheLeadTeachingArtist(LTA)willworkcloselywithESPHSstafftocreateandoverseea10-monthcurriculumforincarceratedartistsinbothamen’sandwomen’sprison.Thecurriculumwillinclude

storytelling,screenwriting,sounddesignandanimation.TheLTAwillhelpidentifyspecialiststoactasteachingartistsinthesedisciplines,andwillaccompanythemduringclassesinsidetheprisons.Theincarceratedartistswillproduceshortanimatedfilmsoverthecourseoftheprogram.WorkingwithESPHSstaff,theLTAwillexploreotheranimatedfilmsonsubjectssurroundinglawenforcement,thecriminallegalsystemandincarcerationforpossibleinclusioninthepresentations.Thisemploymentopportunityisatemporary,part-timeposition.TheLTAwillreporttoEasternState’sSeniorVicePresidentandDirectorofInterpretationSeanKelley.TheLTAwillalsoworkcloselywithDirectorofEducationLaurenZalutandManagerofResearchandPublicProgrammingAnnieAnderson.Responsibilities:

• Overallprojectmanagementforcommissioningandcreatingtheanimatedfilmsoverthecourseofoneyear:June2018toJune2019.

• Designandwritecurriculumforaclassthatwillresultincompletedfilmsattheendofthe

course,inclosepartnershipwithESPHSstaffandotheradvisors.

• Providecontinuitywithincarceratedartiststhroughoutthecreativeprocess,bridgingthemanystepsfromconceptiontocompletionoftheanimatedfilms.TheLTAwillattendallclasseswithincarceratedartists.

• Preparecoursematerials.Purchaseartsuppliesandothermaterialsasnecessaryforclass.

• Identify,hireandcoordinateteachingartistsandspecialistsinstorytelling,screenwriting,sounddesignandanimationtoteachincarceratedartists.

• InterfacewithDepartmentsofCorrections,securingaccesstofacilitiesforoutsideteaching

specialists,securingapprovalsforartists’materials,andotherseekingpermissionsasnecessary.

• Maintainstrictrecords,includingcorrectionalinstitutiongateclearances,classattendance,payrollhours,transportationexpensesandperiodicprogressreports.

• SupportESPHSstaffinotheraspectsoftheprojectadministration,asrequired.Requirements

• Knowledgeofartmakingtechniques.Experienceworkingwithartists.Knowledgeoffilmmakingand/oranimationstronglypreferred.Personalartisticpractice(inanydiscipline)preferred.

• Experienceworkingineducationalenvironments,withteachingandmanagingaclassroompreferred.Abilitytoorganize,instructandmotivateindividualsandgroups.Abilitytomaintaineffectiveworkingrelationshipswithparticipants,associatesandgeneralpublic.

• Accesstoreliableautomobiletransportation.

• Desiretoworkwithincarceratedpeople.Experiencewiththecriminaljusticesystemorlivedexperiencewithincarcerationpreferred.

• Superiororganizationalandprojectmanagementskills.Detailoriented.Abilitytotroubleshoot

• Exceptionalwrittenandverbalcommunicationskills.

• Abilitytoworkindependently.Willingnesstoworkcollaborativelyandinpartnershipwithprogrammanagers,teachingspecialistsandartists.Flexibilityandadaptability.

Rate:

$25/hour.EmployeewillworkanaverageofthreedaysperweekfromJune2018toJune2019.Healthbenefitsarenotincludedwiththisposition.

Althoughthepenitentiarynowstandsinruin,itsstoryremainsrelevanttoday.Itopenedasahistoricsitein1994,attractingjustover10,000daytimevisitors.In2017itwasvisitedbymorethan260,000.Thesite’sstaffandprogrammingcontinuetogrowbyinvitingthepublicintonewspaces,mountingoriginalartistinstallations,andengagingvisitorsinconversationsaboutsomeofthemostchallengingandtroublingissuesfacingournation.Thepenitentiaryisopeneveryday,year-round,from10:00amto5:00pm.Formoreinformationpleasevisitwww.easternstate.org
