all students enrolling in a Vocational education and Training (VeT) course require a unique Student identifier (uSi).
Your uSi account contains your nationally recognised training records and results, which you can access anywhere in australia.
create your UsI online at www.usi.gov.au and provide the number to NRt upon enrolment.
reCogNitioN oF prior learNiNggain credit for your pre-existing skills
We recognise that people gain skills and knowledge in a variety of ways. many highly skilled people have developed their abilities through pathways other than formal education, including paid employment, community work, volunteering and participating in informal training.
recognition of prior learning (rpl) provides you with an opportunity to have your pre-existing skills recognised in a nationally accredited system.
To have your skills recognised, an assessor will work with you to identify whether your skills meet industry standard, and if any further training is required. You may be able to get recognition for a part qualification, or a complete qualification.

Vet studeNt loaNspayment assistance
VeT Student loans is a new loan scheme, introduced to replace the VeT-fee help scheme from 1 January 2017.
Students enrolling in an eligible course will be entitled to apply for a VeT Student loan.
Information on Vet student loans can be found at education.gov.au/vet-student-loans.

Fees aNd paymeNt OpTiONSFeesthe type of study you elect to undertake in 2017 will determine the full cost of your training.
if you are a Western australian resident, the State government will heavily subsidise your training. The State government sets the fees charged at each qualification level, and in general, you pay lower fees for introductory qualifications and higher fees for higher level qualifications.

• Direct deposit – speak to our friendly student services team for the details

• Purchase order – employers or job service providers paying for student fees can provide a purchase order or authorisation to pay form.

withdrawalsif you decide to withdraw from your course, you may be eligible to claim a refund of the fees you have paid.
You will need to complete the application form available from your nearest campus. You must formally withdraw prior to the census date outlined on your confirmation of enrolment. Documentary evidence of your withdrawal reason may be required.

short Coursescan both be accredited or non-accredited, and typically take less than 40 nominal hours to complete. These courses are usually designed for a specific purpose and are not linked to a larger training course.
sKill setsare nationally accredited programs
containing one or more units of competency. These courses
are designed to give you a work outcome in the minimum timeframe. Skill sets also form
part of a larger qualification, giving you credit should you wish to complete the full qualification
at a later date.
CertiFiCate ihelps participants develop foundation skills required for initial work, community involvement and further study.
CertiFiCate iiprovides participants with the basic knowledge and skills to undertake work in a defined
context. Studying a certificate ii may include undertaking a
traineeship with an on-the-job component.
CertiFiCate iiihelps students develop strong skills in a range of occupational areas. certificate iii courses can often be completed as part of an apprenticeship or traineeship.
diplomaprepares you for work that requires a broad range of complex technical skills and in-depth knowledge. Diploma courses often include training in management, planning and evaluation, budgeting and finance, and equip you with the higher level knowledge and skills of your chosen vocational area.
CertiFiCate iVTeaches supervisory and
advanced technical skills which may build on skills already acquired in the workplace,
through a certificate iii or its equivalent.
adVaNCed diplomagraduates at this level will have
broad knowledge and skills for paraprofessional and highly skilled

aBorigiNal traiNiNg serViCes supportaboriginal and torres strait islander students are eligible for a range of support services through our Kimberley and pilbara based aboriginal training services (ats) teams.
Our aTS officers provide the following support options:
• Assistance with study, talking to lecturers and support in class
• Mentoring, tutor support and career counselling
• Liaison with Centerlink including abstudy application assistance, Job Services australia, remote Jobs and communities program and other service providers
• Assistance arranging accommodation, transport and study support resources such as workwear and protective equipment
• Referrals or information about other services such as financial counselling, childcare and health needs
disaBility supportour disability support team enhances access and participation for students with disabilities.
Our Disability Support coordinator can provide information and advice, and arrange individual study support with students. Students are encouraged to speak with their lecturer or Disability Support about the impact of their disability or medical condition to help determine what assistance or adjustments need to be made in order for them to achieve their vocational goals. all information given will be treated confidentially.
learNiNg resourCesdedicated libraries and bookshops are situated at our Broome and Kununurra campuses.
books can be delivered to students upon request. Students can also search for library books, magazines, DVDs, cDs and online resources using an online catalogue listed available through our website, northregionaltafe.wa.edu.au.
CQuNiVersity study huBsCQuniversity operates study centres at our Broome and Karratha campuses, allowing local and distance learners access to supported university education.
The centres are staffed by a full-time cQuniversity representative, who provides existing students with administrative and academic support, and prospective students with information about the university’s programs, including how to apply.
itas tutoriNgour ats team can assist aboriginal and torres strait islander students source tutoring support through the indigenous tutorial assistance scheme (itas).
iTaS provides students with valuable tutoring to support in skill development needed to complete their course.

literaCy aNd NumeraCy supportliteracy and numeracy support is available to all students once they have enrolled in a vocational qualification.
This support assists students to complete the qualification they are enrolled in by providing assistance with the literacy and/or numeracy component of the course.
opeN learNiNg CeNtresstudents are welcome to visit the open learning Centres located at each of our campuses to receive extra assistance with their studies.
access lecturers are available to provide extra support to students, and also host an array of group activities, excursions and special events.
studeNt support huBstudents requiring additional tutoring support, particularly those with special needs, can drop into the student support hub located at our Broome campus.
The hub is fitted with soft colourful furnishings, ipads, computers with touchscreen and voice recognition software, and NrT brochures and literature.

Kimberley girl trainingWe deliver customised training to participants of Goolarri media enterprises’ Kimberley Girl throughout the course of the annual indigenous role model program.
The px2 Training has been designed to help young participants build confidence and self-esteem, identify barriers to success, develop strategies for overcoming issues, build personal strengths and set achievable goals.
The training was developed to complement the kimberley girl program, which aims to revolutionise cultural confidence and transform participants from shy, sometimes damaged spirits into confident young women.
green army trainingWe have worked closely with mamabulanjin Aboriginal corporation to deliver horticulture and conservation land management training to participants of the Green Army Project.
for up to 30 hours per week, green army participants have undertaken training with NrT’s horticulture and conservation land management lecturers, completing real life practical tasks in land revegetation, weed management, plant propagation and other conservation tasks.
The training was further customised to include literacy and numeracy support to assist participants through a certificate ii in conservation and land management ahc21010.
pre-employment trades trainingWe deliver customised pre-employment courses to organisations seeking new intakes of employees.
We work closely with employers to design courses that simulate their working environment, hence developing participants’ skills in line with the organisation’s needs.
These courses typically run for two to six weeks and allow potential new employees to demonstrate that they are ready and committed to the organisation.
many of the courses also encompass valuable life skills in areas including fitness, money and time management.
rural and remote training project western australiaWe offer scheduled on-site culturally appropriate aged care training to eligible remote community health care services.
We work closely with health care service managers and key stakeholders to determine training needs and facilitate a culturally appropriate and inclusive model training package.
This mode of training allows for staff skill development, accreditation training, and provides community members with the opportunity to gain skills for employment in the health care industry.
supervisory trainingWe offer tailored courses for employees new to supervising Remote Jobs and communities Program (RJcP) participants.
Delivered over one week, these courses provide participants with underpinning skills in workplace safety, first aid, worksite assessments and incident reporting.
project management trainingWe offer customised project management training to companies as far as Kununurra in the north, all the way to the city of Perth.
This training is structured around the individual needs of each organisation, and provides a summary of project management and effective application of the process based on regulatory requirements.

youth re-engagement programsWe work closely with local schools and organisations to support disadvantaged youth to re-engage with education.
Our Youth re-engagement programs are designed on an individual basis, and are aimed at improving outcomes for young people, assisting them to re-connect with learning, and pathway into further training.

FaCilities
hair aNd Beauty saloNsNrT operates a training hair and beauty salon in broome, with a refurbished facility in karratha set to function from mid-2017. both facilities encompass modern hairdressing, beauty therapy and manicure stations, along with a classroom replicating a working environment, to equip students with all the skills needed to gain entry into the hair or beauty industry.
Balu Burubalu buru is a 20 hectare site at 12 mile in broome where horticulture and conservation land management training is carried out. Opportunities at this location include research trials cultivating local super food gubinge and fire management training for remote aboriginal communities.
Broome aQuaCulture CeNtreThe broome aquaculture centre (bac) was built to support the training, research, production and development of industry needs. The tropical aquaculture facility supports the production of marine finfish and has also been crucial in the care and production of many other species.
in addition to these commercially important and interesting species, the bac has also provided a critical support role for a number of aquaculture ventures. Some of these include community-based indigenous projects wishing to increase the capabilities of their workforce, through to commercial aquaculture ventures with specific projects requiring specialist assistance and advice.
Broome maritime simulatioN CeNtreThe broome maritime Simulation centre is one of the most advanced maritime training, research and development facilities in the country. The centre provides specialised state-of-the-art maritime simulation services for new and existing port development research and design projects.
eleCtriCal aNd iNstrumeNtatioN traiNiNg CeNtreThe new electrical and instrumentation Training centre at karratha supports the delivery of a range of electrical and instrumentation training, through the use of the latest interactive computer-based training aides, training rigs and instrumentation.

health aNd CommuNity traiNiNg CeNtreThe new health and community Services Training centre at our pundulmurra campus allows nursing, aged care, childcare and other community services students to gain hands-on, practical experience in a simulated environment.
The industry standard facility encompasses a simulation wing incorporating an eight bed hospital ward, a nurses’ station, patient examination and treatment rooms, a simulated home environment, utility rooms for cleaning, laundry, medication and storage purposes, and a viewing area for lecturer observation of practical assessments. The centre also contains two classroom wings, with one training room suitable for use as a practicing crèche, and a staff accommodation wing.
iNdustry sKills CeNtreindustry Skills centres at our karratha and pundulmurra campuses support the delivery of essential training to tradespeople employed in the mining, construction and logistics industries. The centres were built to support the pilbara workforce’s specific training goals, through the delivery of courses in firefighting, forklift operation, rigging and dogging, scaffolding, working at heights, and working in confined spaces.
liBrary aNd BooKshopDedicated libraries and bookshops are situated at the broome and kununurra campuses, and books can be delivered to students upon request. Students can search for library books, magazines, DVDs, cDs and online resources using an online catalogue listed on the NrT website.
the pearler’s shedThe pearler’s Shed is NrT’s industry-standard training restaurant based off-campus in the heart of broome. The facility opens to the public and also provides off-site event catering, allowing students to gain real industry experience in the areas of front of house, kitchen operations and commercial cookery.
trades traiNiNg areasState-of-the-art trades facilities are available to students across each campus including three recently built workshops in broome, Derby and halls creek. These facilities have been built to industry standard with large work spaces and cutting edge technology in each of the classrooms.

what is an australian apprenticeship or traineeship?apprenticeships and traineeships combine paid employment with structured training, providing participants with practical hands-on skills together with a nationally recognised qualification.
apprenticeships and traineeships are available to anyone of working age, including school students, school-leavers, those re-entering the workforce, or those simply wanting a career change. Offered in a range of industry areas, participants can complete their qualification by learning skills both at work and under the guidance of a training provider.
North regional Tafe works with you and your employer to develop a training plan, deliver training, provide support, assess your achievement of skills and issue your qualification upon successful completion.

how does having an apprentice or trainee help your business?North regional taFe offers flexible apprenticeship and traineeship courses to fit in with your business needs.
as an established training provider, we know the trends, demands, challenges and opportunities of the kimberley and pilbara regions.
We specialise in training which provides your apprentice or trainee with a solid knowledge base and work readiness skills. This may be done on-campus, online, on-the-job, or a combination of all delivery methods. Your employee’s apprenticeship or traineeship will be developed in consultation with you, the employer. This approach features more flexible options, backed by extra support services.

Financial incentivesthe australian government provides incentives to employers to reduce the cost of training apprentices/trainees.
The State government also provides payroll tax exemptions for employers of apprentices and trainees. The Department of Training and Workforce Development provides funds for most new apprentices/trainees. for more details and eligibility criteria, please contact your chosen australian apprenticeship Support Network (aaSN) provider, listed on this page.
how do i employ and sign up an apprentice or trainee?you can employ an apprentice/trainee directly as if you would recruit any other employee within your business, or you can utilise the services of a group training organisation (gto) and become a host employer.

youth OpTiONStraining at North regional taFe can open up a world of opportunities if you are still at school and looking to get a head start in your career.
what is Vet iN sChools?Vocational education and training in schools (Vetis) are courses undertaken by school students as part of their senior secondary certificate.
NrT VeTiS programs are available to all high school students in the kimberley and pilbara who would like to gain a qualification while still at school. Students in years 11 and 12 can complete courses while working towards their Wace.
sChool Based traiNeeships/appreNtiCeships school based traineeships and apprenticeships are paid employment-based training arrangements formalised in a national training contract made between the employer and the student (and guardian).
They are available as part of the VeT in Schools program.
Students will undertake a variety of study at school, training with NrT, and will also be contracted to work and train with an employer. This gives students the chance to complete the requirements of a nationally recognised qualification while still graduating from school with their Wace.
Students undertaking a school based traineeship or apprenticeship under the NrT VeTiS program are exempt from tuition, resource and enrolment fees. Depending on the qualification, students may be required to purchase personal protective equipment and textbooks.
leaViNg sChool – NotiCe oF arraNgemeNtFor young people in years 11 and 12, there are a range of approved education options available that meet the school education act 1999.
Students can leave school as long as they participate in an approved full-time training or study option, which includes studying at Tafe full-time, undertaking a combination of Tafe and employment, or undertaking an apprenticeship or traineeship.

aBorigiNal sChool Based traiNiNgaboriginal school Based training (asBt) provides opportunities for aboriginal students in years 10, 11 and 12 to gain a qualification.
Students learn about the world of work, workplace expectations, explore careers and training areas, as well as undertake real or simulated work projects. The training is specifically designed to be engaging and encourages students to go into further training, a traineeship or employment.

NrT’s hair and beauty salons in broome and karratha are equipped with all the tools students needs to build practical skills in the hair or beauty industry. The refurbished training salons encompass modern hairdressing, beauty therapy and manicure stations. The karratha facility also has the addition of a massage training room and spray tan booth, in operation from mid-2017.
Our industry standard health and community Training centre at pundulmurra offers students the opportunity to gain hands-on, practical experience in a simulated hospital wing. The facility encompasses a hospital ward, a nurses’ station, patient examination and treatment rooms, classrooms, and a viewing area for lecturer observation of practical assessments.
