When should I start
learning another language?
Language learning can begin at any age.
Motivation and a positive attitude are the keys tosuccess.
Starting at an early age allows children more timeto learn and practise all aspects of the language.
Secondary students and adult learners pick upcertain aspects of the language more quickly andefficiently.
Learning any language is a lifelong pursuit.

Second language course series. The language is
studied as a subject to develop communication skills
and cultural awareness.
Bilingual programs.
The language being learned is used for instruction for
up to half the school day.
Alternative French language programs (includes
French immersion). French is used as the languageof instruction for most of each school day.

Albertas language
learning
Language learning is an important part of a students education
for many reasons.
Research shows that learning a second language greatly
contributes to a students educational experiences, personal
growth and development of higher-level thinking skills.
Alberta Education believes in the importance of providing
students with expanded opportunities to learn a second
language.
Alberta Education will encourage and support theimplementation of second language programs
Local school authorities determine whether they implement a
local requirement and which language programs they will offer.

Albertas language
learning (continued)
Alberta Education continues
to develop programs of study, learning and teaching
resources and assessment materials on a phased-in
basis for grades 49, in the following languages: Cree,Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Punjabi, Spanish
and Ukrainian
to provide support for the use of alternative methods,
including video-conferencing, to support the delivery of
quality language programs to all Alberta students. Scholarships and bursaries remain available to current and
future language teachers to develop, enhance and maintain
their skills.
