The traditions continueLomega, Okarche qualify for state for
combined 48th time
Free throws nearly cost Lomega an area championship.
Then it was free throws that eventually secured another trip to state.
The third-ranked Lady Raiders outlasted No. 5 Shattuck 66-58 in overtime in Woodward last Friday night in their Class B area championship.
Nursing a lead, Lomega missed six consecutive free throws in the final 45 seconds. In overtime, however, the Lady Raiders were 8-for-8 from the line while outscoring Shattuck 14-6.
“I guess you could say we made them when we needed to,” Lomega coach Kevin Lewallen said. “But we should have made them earlier and we wouldn’t have needed overtime.”
The game was sent to extra time when Shattuck scored at the buzzer after a missed Daniela Galindo free throw. Lomega’s Hailey Duffy grabbed the missed shot thinking it was a two-shot foul. The ball was swiped from her hands by a Shattuck player, resulting in the made shot.
Taylor Mendell went 5-for-5 from the stripe in the extra frame and led Lomega with 22 points.
Hannah Meier scored 11 and Kylie Turner 10 for Lomega.
The Lady Raiders were up 14-7 after a quarter, but saw the lead trimmed to three points by halftime. Lomega extended the lead in the third, but was outscored 14-6 by Shattuck in the fourth quarter.
Lomega’s win puts it in
As expected, Okarche cruised through its area and enters the Class B state tournament as the heavy favorite to win it all.
The top-ranked Lady Warriors blitzed No. 8 Buffalo Valley 76-20 in their area title game last Saturday night in Ada.
Okarche’s in the state tournament for the 23rd time and this year’s trip is the third straight. Last year’s Class A state champions have now reached state 12 times in 15 years.
Perhaps none of the previous trips were as easy as this one.
Lomega’s three playoff opponents to date have fallen to defeated by an average of 57.3 points.
Buffalo Valley entered 22-2 and on a 14-game win streak. It couldn’t score more than eight points in any quarter.
Okarche (26-2), led by Morgan Vogt’s 19 points, led 19-4 after a quarter and 46-9 at halftime.
Madi Grellner poured in 18 more points for Okarche while Kenadey Grellner scored 10.
Warriors oustedOkarche’s run through the
consolation bracket ended two wins shy of a state berth.
The Warriors won four straight elimination games, but dropped a 58-49 decision to third-ranked Lookeba-Sickles in the fifth such game Friday night in the consolation semifinals.
Okarche pulled within a point in the final minutes, but foul trouble ultimately contributed to its doom.

Dover’s bid to return to the state tournament for the first time in more than two decades fell one win short.
The Longhorns dropped their second game of the playoffs to fifth-ranked Okeene, this time by a 75-44 count in the Class B area consolation championship game Saturday night in Woodward.
Dover, which lost 51-46 to the Whippets the Saturday before in the regional championship, had its season end at 20-8. The Longhorns won 15 of their final 18 games.
It was the closest Dover has been to the state tournament since making the quarterfinals in 1993.
The Longhorns trailed by just six points at halftime, but were outscored 38-13 by the Whippets in the second half. Okeene (23-4) is in state for the first time since winning the Class A crown in 2007.
The Whippets got 16 points from 6-foot-8 center Hunter Miles, who broke a cheekbone in practice earlier in the week.
Hunter Womack paced Dover with 16 points while Junior Obeso scored 15.
Dover got within a win of state after Friday afternoon’s thrilling 62-59 victory over Leedey.
Trailing late, Dover got a go-ahead bucket from Obeso with about 10 seconds remaining.
Leedey called a timeout for a final play with four seconds left, but Dover deflected the ensuing inbounds pass and got the steal. Gamez made two free throws with less than a second to play to ice the win.
Dover got a huge start from D’Vante Randle as he scored 13 in the first quarter and 18 in the first half. The Longhorns led 38-21 at the half.
Randle added eight more points in the fourth and finished with 28 points. He made six 3-pointers.

Dover boys’ playoff run ends shy of state
Brady Smith is state runner-upKHS junior 1 of 4 Jackets to place at state wrestling
Despite a heartbreaking finish, Brady Smith capped a fantastic junior season last Saturday at the Class 3A state wrestling tournament.
Chandler’s Tanner Wall scored in overtime to beat Smith 7-5 in their 138-pound state championship match at State Fair Arena. The loss ended a stellar run by Smith through the post-season in which he earned a regional championship and finished as state runner-up.
He was one of four Jacket wrestlers to place as KHS took fifth in the Class 3A team standings with 51 points. Per-ry remained state champion with 118 points while Tonka-wa was runner-up with 82.
Earlier on Saturday, three KHS wrestlers won their consolation championship matches to finish third at their respective weights.
Included was senior Dylan Blundell, who beat Chandler’s Jackson Kashwer 8-4 at 195 pounds to cap a 3-1 march through the bracket.
Sophomore Maddy Roney has a third-place medal for the second time in as many years. He, too, was 3-1 after beating Heritage Hall’s Grant Sorenson 5-4 for third at 113 pounds.
Maddy’s older brother Christian Roney capped his career by placing for the first time. The elder Roney beat
Tonkawa’s Jacob Collins 6-1 for third place.
Four of Kingfisher’s five qualifiers won their first-round matches on Friday morning. The lone exception was junior Brett Smith, who was beaten by Newkirk’s Jar-ed Schieber. Smith went on to drop his consolation semifinal match that night.
Only Brady Smith won his semifinal match Friday night as he outlasted Comanche’s Wyatt Schoolfield 10-8.
Maddy Roney was beaten by Zach Atencio of Plainview, 4-3; Christian Roney was pinned in the final minute by Jonce Blaylock of Berryhill; and Blundell was beaten 6-0 by Barnsdall’s Caleb Hawes.
Maddy Roney bounced back Saturday morning to beat Jesie Hodge of Jay, 6-4, in the consolation semifinals.
Christian Roney did the same as he pinned Barnsdall’s Cameron Turley at 4:29.
Blundell also earned a pin as he bested Perkins-Tryon’s Garrett Self at 3:16.
Four placers is the most for KHS since it had five in 2009.
Brady Smith is just the second Jacket grappler to reach a championship match since 2009 as well, joining state champion Wayne Hart-field, who won heavyweight in 2012.
