KICK AZ-S NEWS
The recent rain has sure made things grow in our desert if my back yard is any indication. Now that I’ve gotten some of my yard work done let’s go for a ride out to the Boyce Thompson Arbore-tum State Park near Superior. I’ve planned the ride for next week on the 11th with more details in the newsletter, should be some nice weather.
It is with sadness I learned of the passing of our friend and brother Dave Bear. I sure enjoyed traveling with Dave and chatting with him about motorcycles and his service with special forces in Vietnam. Penny is hosting a Celebration of Dave’s Life on the 23rd and I hope you can attend. Please R.S.V.P her if you can make it.
On the 15th of April the “40 to Phoenix” group will be arriving at the Home Office in Phoenix. This is always a fun event to come out and tour the Office and meet friends from all over the country. There will be short rides planned and a dinner with the group in the evening. Check out the web-site that GWRRA has set up. 40 to Phoenix
A couple of other events you don’t want to miss is the GWRRA Region “F”un Rally/Convention be-ing held this year in Tucson at the luxurious JW Marriot Starr Pass Resort. Our group rates are always reasonable so come enjoy a relaxing Memorial Day Weekend with our Region F Friends.
Another fun ride will be on the following weekend, May 30th, when AZ Ride hosts their 9th Annual Devil’s Highway Run on the Coronado Trail. This is a great motorcycle highway and a ride you don’t want to miss. It will be getting warm in the low desert then but very nice riding in the pines. Make your reservations now and don’t forget to register for this free ride at AZ Ride.com to be eli-gible for the Ride Pin and prizes.
Ride Safe,
John

Cell Phone Distracted Drivers
Cliff & Char Simpson, Interim Chapter S Rider Education Leaders
KICK AZ-S NEWS
Researcher David Strayer of the University of Utah found that talking on a cell phone quad-ruples your risk of an accident, about the same as if you were driving drunk. That risk doubles again, to eight times normal, if you are texting.
A 2009 study sponsored by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration examined com-mercial vehicle crashes and concluded that text messaging creates a crash risk 23 times greater than driving without distraction.
Sending or receiving a text message distracts a driver for about five seconds; at 60 MPH, that represents a distance of about 440 feet in which the car is essentially out of human con-trol, driving itself.
According to the NHTSA, over 3,331 people were killed and over 387,000 injured in motor vehicle accidents connected to distracted driv-ing. That represents 10 percent of all fatal crashes and 17 percent of all accidents that caused injuries. The National Safety Council disputes these findings, and says that at least 28 percent of vehicle crashes are caused by texting and cell phone use alone—never mind other distractions.
Young drivers are at the greatest risk for dis-tracted driving incidents. Some researchers speculate that this is because inexperienced drivers are the most likely to overestimate their ability to multitask. The NHTSA says that in 2009, some 16 percent of teen drivers in-volved in a fatal crash were reported to have been distracted.
Are drivers taking this seriously enough?
No. Surveys find that adults recognize that other drivers are behaving irresponsibly, but they find excuses for their own risky driving behavior.
In a survey from the AAA Foundation for Traf-fic Safety, over 90 percent of drivers recog-nized the danger from cell phone distractions and found it “unacceptable” that drivers text or send e-mail while driving. Nevertheless, 35 percent of these same people admitted to having read or sent a text message or e-mail while driving in the previous month. Similarly, two-thirds of the survey respondents admitted to talking on a cell phone, even though 88 per-cent found it a threat to safety. (Source: www.enddd.com)
Now, go out and talk with your family, friends and neighbors about the hazards of distracted driving! “It can wait … don’t text and drive!”

Practice Field Days give all riders, regardless of riding abilities, a chance to practice and increase their riding skills. These multi-chapter field days give riders an opportunity to ride a variety of ma-neuvers at their own skill level, to ask questions and to have fun rid-ing. Have trouble getting your Wing on it’s center stand? Not sure how to pick it up? This is the place to learn!
All riders, all levels are welcome. In keeping with the GWRRA tradition of SAFETY, all riders must wear hel-mets, long sleeves, long pants, over the ankle boots and full-finger gloves.
See you there!
