http://www.how-to-study.com/study-skills/en/language-arts/7/metaphors/ This site is used to instruct students in the use of
metaphors. It gives many different examples of common metaphors and their meanings.
Definition of a metaphor: “A metaphor is a figure of speech in which a word or
phrase that denotes a certain object or idea is applied to another word or phrase to imply some similarity between them.”1

An Information System refers to “a system of people, data records and activities that process the data and information in an organization and it includes the organization’s manual and automated processes. In a narrow sense, the term information system (or computer-based information system) refers to the specific application software that is used to store data records in a computer system and automates some of the information-processing activities of the organization.”2
http://www.econ.uba.ar/servicios/publicaciones/journal3/contents/HGazendam/methaphors.htm This paper discusses three different
metaphors by comparing a mill, a cell, and the mind to information systems, it also explains their different meanings in relation to society.
“An information system consists of smaller bodies (objects) with a specialized function, of which the bearer of inherited, type-determining information is the most noticeable.”3
An information system is grown, not built. Information systems have a limited lifetime, but their type-determining
information may be copied by new information systems. Information systems need information (food) to grow and to live, and can
process raw material into food for themselves and other components of the organism.”3
A computer bug is a common metaphor to describe a problem in a computer’s software.
This term is said to have originated in 1947 when an actual bug (a moth) was found within a computer. “The operators affixed the moth to the
computer log, with the entry: "First actual case of bug being found". They put out the word that they had "debugged" the machine, thus introducing the term "debugging a computer program".”4

http://www.jqjacobs.net/anthro/metaphor.html This website is about how people have incorporated
I.S. metaphors in to the workplace. An example would be the internet, and online services
are highways due to their ability to enable people to obtain information from telecommunication networks.
