FSAE Paddle Shift System

- Problem Statement- Motivation / Objectives- Design Intent- Initial Cost Analysis

Problem Statement

- Traditional Shift Method slow and inefficient in fast paced enviornment.

- Design a quick shift system that allows driver to maintain both hands on the steering wheel.

Motivation

- Increased driver concentration and safety.

- Better control of the vehicle and faster reaction times.

- First for FIU FSAE, and hope to set the standard.

Motivation

Objectives

- Match the reliability of standard shift lever and clutch pedal set up.

- Match the weight of previous shifter set up. - Shift time under 1 second- Cost under $1,000- Quick, and clean shifts.

Design - Paddles

Design - Paddles

• Shows the distance allowable for the paddles

• Prototype uses a conductive cord or could be modified to use a wire fed design

Design - Paddles

• Displays an in depth look at a new design using a snap action lever switch

• Modified positioning of the paddles and modified the bracket

Design - Paddles

• Latest design with a push button switch

• Renovated paddle and lever bracket

• Difficulty surrounding positioning of the system

Design – Gear Shift- Pneumatic cylinders to drive gear shift- Double acting cylinder- 20lbf required in push or pull direction

- Choice of Bimba because “Bimba Manufacturing Company is an ISO 9001: 2008 certified company.”

- ¾ cylinder allows more flexibility for pressure loss, design error, etc (Cost difference minimal)

Design – Gear Shift

- Cylinder mounted to reduce risk of piston rod buckling

- TBD – Clutch Actuation – linked to pneumatic assembly or separate electric actuator

Design – Pneumatic Assembly- Solenoids used to control flow- Normally closed – 12v rated

- Flow through Polyurethane Clear Tubing- (Min.) Durometer 80A – Rated - 130 PSI – 220 (F)

- ASTM D2240 - 05(2010)- Standard Test Method for Rubber Property—Durometer Hardness

- TBD – Flow Regulator, Fluid Reservoir (9, 12, 20 oz tanks)

Design – Closed Circuit

- 12v supply from vehicle

- Microcontroller to send signal to solenoid after receiving signal from driver (Arduino, PIC, TI)

- Transistor between microcontroller and solenoids
