oday there is no shortage of news. It’s on demand, on every corner, online
and on our phones. Often it merges reporting with commentary designed
to create emotion and generate passion. At PBS and Vegas PBS, we seek
to provide programs that provide insight, perspective and respectful dis-
agreement. Meaningful community solutions require mutual respect,
thoughtful and engaging perspectives, fact-based content, conversations and experi-
ences delivered with warmth and humanity.
For more than 50 years you have welcomed us into your homes, tuning in for stories
with meaning. And for 34 of those years, many of you tuned in to Vegas PBS for a recap
of the week’s top news stories on Nevada Week in Review. After a three-year hiatus,
we are pleased to announce the return of this weekly public affairs show on Vegas PBS.
Nevada Week is a weekly half-hour public
affairs program that explores and examines
current and emerging local issues critical to
Nevada with the people who have researched
the topic and have perspectives or responsi-
bility for finding solutions. It builds on the
success of Nevada Week in Review, but with
a future-focused, forward-looking approach.
In a media landscape full of pundits, Nevada Week will provide a non-partisan, non-
sectarian, non-commercial exploration of the issues facing Nevada. We will go beyond
breaking news, headlines, tweets and hot topics to cover a wide range of important
issues such as health, water, transportation, arts and culture, education, economic
development, family income, social services, economics and of course politics.
Instead of simply discussing critical issues, the show’s intention is to inform and
empower those viewers who want to make informed votes or take personal action to
drive the future. Our goal is to inspire, connect and strengthen a community that is curi-
ous and enthusiastic about issues and ideas that matter, and to increase civic engage-
ment based on fact-based information for the improvement of our community.
Nevada Week will be hosted by long-time television news anchor Casey Smith. Casey
has served as an anchor and reporter for The NOW Report, KTNV and KLAS in Las
Vegas as well as local news programs in California and Wyoming. As a well-respected
and accomplished news anchor and long-time Nevada resident, Casey brings with him
a depth of knowledge of the issues facing Nevada and a thoroughness that informs his
work. He will be an immediate asset to the show, our viewers, and to Vegas PBS.
Funding issues are always a reality when launching, or continuing, any local produc-
tion. We are able to bring back local public affairs programming now because of gen-
erous support from corporate sponsorship partners and from members like you. We
hope you will tune in Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. beginning July 10 for the new Nevada Week.

Chasing Churchill: In Search of My GrandfatherTuesday, July 3 at 11 p.m.
In the concluding episode of this series,Winston Churchill's granddaughter, CeliaSandys, travels to Morocco and to the South ofFrance in search of those places that gaveChurchill particular pleasure. Here, even duringthe turmoil of the Second World War, he foundtime to travel with Roosevelt and indulge hisfavorite relaxation — painting. Towards theend of his life, travel, friends and the solace hefound in painting and writing became more andmore important to him. Sandy reflects on thelife of the man she knew: a life that began onthe battlefields of the world, blossomed throughremarkable qualities of leadership and inspira-tion, but then began to fade into the melancholyof old age.
The Statue of LibertyWednesday, July 4 at 11 p.m.
For more than 100 years, the Statue ofLiberty has been a symbol of hope and refugefor generations of immigrants. In this lyrical, compelling and provocative portrait of the stat-ue, Ken Burns explores both the history ofAmerica’s premier symbol and the meaning ofliberty itself. Featuring rare archival photo-graphs, paintings and drawings, readings fromactual diaries and letters and newspapers ofthe day, the fascinating story of this universallyadmired monument is told.
ProhibitionMondays at 10 p.m. beginning July 23
Set in the era of bathtub gin, bootleggersand speakeasies, this documentary series byKen Burns and Lynn Novick tells the true storyof the rise, rule and fall of the 18thAmendment to the U.S. Constitution. It wascalled the Noble Experiment, but it was in factone of America’s most notorious civic failures,an object lesson in the challenge of legislatinghuman behavior.
Stories of War and PeaceThroughout the Month
The Great War: American ExperienceTuesday, July 3 at 9 p.m.
This series tells the rich and complex storyof World War I through the voices of nurses, journalists, aviators and American troops.Tonight’s concluding episode opens in the fallof 1918, on the eve of the bloodiest battle inAmerican history — the Meuse-Argonne innortheastern France. Back in the UnitedStates, a deadly new enemy swept throughcities and military camps: the flu. At the front, more American soldiers were killed by the fluthan in combat. Then at 11:00 a.m. onNovember 11, 1918, the guns fell silent alongthe Western Front. As the war ends, America isforever transformed by the violent and bloodyconflict. And while many herald the peace, others worry about democracy at home.
The Civil WarMondays at 10 p.m. through July 16
This epic nine-episode series by the award-winning documentary filmmaker Ken Burns con-tinues this month. Heralded as an unforgettableintroduction to a four-year conflict fought in10,000 places, the film vividly embraces theentire sweep of the war: the complex causes andlasting effects, the battles and the home fronts, the generals and the private soldiers, theanguish of death in battle and the grief of fam-ilies at home.
Civilizations: What is Art Good For?Tuesday, July 3 at 8 p.m.
Survey the history of art, from antiquity tothe present, on a global scale. The series revealsthe role art and creative imagination haveplayed in forging humanity.Tonight’s concludingepisode explores art in the age of revolution, war and profound scientific change and consid-ers the question: should art create a separaterealm, a place of escape, or should it plunge intothe chaos, transforming the way we see and livein the world?

t’s a simple fact now that Southern Nevada sports fans have many more choices available
than they did just a short time ago.
Barely a year ago, area residents didn’t have the options we do now, with at least one
professional team competing in every season of the year. Most will rely heavily on home-
town fans to fill their arenas.
Here at Vegas PBS, we certainly rely on locals as our audience, too. But we actually have
something to offer in every season, all year long.
Take the summer months, for example. When school’s out, our daytime PBS KIDS program-
ming is a slam dunk for young minds in need of educational and entertaining stimulation, and
it’s easily viewed anytime from anywhere.
We don’t sell tickets to PBS KIDS programming
— it’s supported entirely by contributions from
viewers. A sponsorship for a program represents a
modest investment, and it will be appreciated by an
audience comparable to many athletic contests. If
you’d like to help bring this programming to young
eyes and minds, give us a call.
This month, you’ll also be able to enjoy – and, of
course, sponsor — our special PBS Summer of Adventure programming. See this month’s cover
story for details.
In the fall, we’ll kick off a new season of the top-flight programming so many viewers cheer
for. This, too, is supported by wonderful individual and corporate sponsors, and reaches into
large numbers of households that see our sponsors as good community supporters.
Each new year brings to mind our calendar of Celebration Months, which salute the ethnic,
cultural and spiritual diversity of our great nation, with programming that over the years has
identified a virtual Hall of Fame in American history. Each month offers a specific theme.
Over the course of the year, Celebration Months call attention to the historic achievements of
women, Black Americans, Asian Pacific Americans and Hispanic Americans.
November salutes the invaluable contributions of our veterans. April recalls the terrible
Holocaust.
We celebrate Earth Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day in their dedicated months. In June,
we recognized the pride of gender diversity.
All of our television programs are supported by our viewers. Sponsorships are essential to our
ability to acquire more of the shows you like.
Sports seasons have a relatively short life. We’re here all year-round, and with your support
for our programming, it will always be “game on.”

No Passport RequiredTuesday, June 10 at 9 p.m.Chef Marcus Samuelsson — co-owner of New York’s critically acclaimed Red
Rooster Harlem — embodies America’s extraordinarily rich cultural diversi-
ty. Born in Ethiopia, raised in Sweden and a proud resident of Harlem, he’s
inspired by this global background to infuse his culinary experiences with
diverse elements of music, history, culture and the arts. This new series cel-
ebrates America’s diverse cultural mosaic as Samuelsson travels to under-
explored parts of American cities to showcase the people, places and culi-
nary flavors of immigrant communities. Join him as he discovers the best
global cuisine hidden in six American cities — in the Arab American commu-
nity in Detroit, the Vietnamese American
residents in New Orleans, the Indo-
Guyanese community in the New York
City borough of Queens, Chicago’s
Mexican population, the Ethiopian com-
munities of Washington, D.C. and the
Haitian community in Miami.
Breaking Big Tuesdays at 11:30 p.m. beginning July 10This new 12-episode documentary series explores the unexpected journey to
success of some of the world’s most influential artists, innovators, political
leaders, athletes, authors and entrepreneurs. The program explores the twists
and turns on the road to thriving careers for some notable figures in various
fields. Each episode traces the unusual paths followed by 12 talented men
and women — from country music superstar Jason Aldean and writer Roxane
Gay to Oscar-winning director Lee Daniels and chef and restaurateur Eddie
Huang — who overcame nearly insurmountable obstacles and long odds to
reach and reimagine their own potential and, ultimately, to break big. The
series will include analysis from eminent social scientists, marketing experts,
film critics, book editors and others to help explain the risk-taking and bold
moves these journeys require.J U L Y 2 0 1 8 27

Antiques Roadshow:Vintage OmahaMonday, July 23 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, July 28 at 4 p.m.
This long-running series captures tales of fami-
ly heirlooms, yard sale bargains and long-lost
items salvaged from attics and basements. This
week, host Mark Walberg and appraisers
take a look at a past visit to Omaha. See
how appraisals from 14 years ago have
held up including an Edgar Allan Poe
daguerreotype, a Teco collection and a
1907 Frank Lloyd Wright archive.
10 Modern Marvels ThatChanged AmericaTuesday, July 24 at 8 p.m.
As part of the Summer of Adventure lineup, this fascinating series takes a
whirlwind tour of 10 engineering feats that made our civilization possible,
including tonight’s episode that features our own Hoover Dam! Begun in
1936, it was designed to do the impossible: stop the mighty Colorado River
dead in its tracks and provide water and power for the growing cities of
Southern California. The dam also employed thousands in the midst of the
Great Depression. Celebrate those who have scoffed at the laws of nature
and defied the naysayers — and sometimes even gravity — by undertaking
these fantastic feats of engineering. Behind many of our daily conveniences
was a clever engineer — and a remarkable story.

POV: The Workers CupSunday, July 15 at 9 p.m. In 2022, Qatar will host the biggest sportingevent in the world, the FIFA World Cup. Butright now, the tournament is being built onthe backs of 1.6 million African and Asianmigrant workers. These men work exceeding-ly long hours for scant salaries, and they liveisolated in labor camps kept outside city lim-its. This special gives voice to the men whoare laboring to build sport's grandest stagewhile competing in a soccer tournament oftheir own – The Workers Cup. It explores uni-versal themes of ambition, aspiration andmasculinity, as we see our protagonists wran-gle hope, meaning and opportunity out of dis-mal circumstances. This results in a terribletoll to the psyche of our protagonists, as theyare depleted of the hope that motivated themto come to Qatar in the first place.

greatest hitters who ever lived. He served as a flight instructor in World War II and a
decorated combat pilot in the Korean War. Lesser known was how he was driven by
shame over his Mexican-American background, humiliation over his father’s weak-
ness and a deep rage over his mother’s virtual abandonment of him.The program will
reveal the star player’s complicated relationships with his family, teammates, press,
fans and himself. Through in-depth interviews, the documentary will demonstrate
the power of the heroic myth-making culture in which Williams flourished. The film
originally airs on Vegas PBS Channel 10 on Monday, July 23 at 9 p.m.

Why I SupportVegas PBS...
As a 70-year Las Vegas resident, I canremember when we had no television. Now,Vegas PBS is celebrating its 50th Anniversary!
Over all these years,Vegas PBS became a veryimportant part of my life. I remember when itfirst went on the air! I became a member early on.
I began sponsoring shows when DowntonAbbey started. I just called the station and saidthat I wanted to help because I was so excitedwith the series and all of the excellent program-ing that I now watch daily.
In fact,Vegas PBS is a very important part ofmy life. Because it brings me so much pleasure,I help by sponsoring shows. It’s so easy to do —just pick up the phone and call, like I did. I havesupported many excellent shows since that firstDownton Abbey sponsorship. You can become asponsor of one or more of your favorite shows, too.
Congratulations to Vegas PBS on being ratednumber one in the country for percentage ofviewers. Please join me as a proud Vegas PBSsponsor!
