Juliana Village Residents & Staff knitting Project for Lambs in Country NSW
There will be some very grateful Lambs in Mudgee very soon.. Our residents & staff have been very busy knitting lamb jumpers. Leanne will be posting them to a man called Donny who is a livestock dealer in Mudgee. He knows all the farmers in the area and he is happy to distribute
them on our behalf. He said although it is Spring it is still very cold in Mudgee and the farmers will love receiving them. Leanne will be attaching a letter with the jumpers to thank Donny very much and also a letter to the farmer/s and photos of our residents Maureen & Sylvia knitting (as
pictured). We are hoping that we might receive a photo of a lamb wearing a jumper! If so, It will be published in our future newsletter. Thank you to all the residents & staff involved it this knitting project: Sylvia, Maureen, Aly and Leanne, Julie (our General Manager), Lorna & Pat. If anyone else wishes to be involved, there is
plenty of time & no doubt farmers will need more next year for the newest lambs born then.

FAMOUS LANDMARKS
Stephansdom -This beautiful Gothic Cathedral is one of the most culturally
significant buildings in Vienna. The multi-coloured ornate tiles on the rooftop, arranged to create the imperial double-headed eagle, immediately draw your eyes towards this magnificent structure. It comprises four towers, 13 bells and a beautiful and lavish interior.
Hohensalzburg Fortress -This 900-year-old mammoth fortress in
Salzburg is among the largest in central Europe — and one of the most well-preserved medieval landmarks in Austria. The building was erected around 1077 by Gebhard von Helfenstein and was built with the intention of ensuring the safety of the archbishops, as well as being the site of barracks and a prison. Today, as a museum, it is one of Salzburg’s most visited tourist destinations — famed for its impressive interior with detailed Gothic furnishings and decorative frescos.
Juliana Village Activities Program – October 2018
Hofburg Palace- A relic to the exhaustively reigning Austrian dynasty, the
House of Habsburg, this excessively impressive royal establishment was built during the 13th century, with an extensive amount of construction work added since. Being once the workplace of many of the country’s most important political figures — from emperors to dukes — it has been witness to a colourful and eventful past.
National Library -A part of the above mentioned Hofburg Palace, the
predecessor of the national library dates back to the 1300s. It was Emperor Friedrich III who first paved the way to turning it into an imperial library, ordering the government to collect all the Habsburg family heirlooms to preserve in the building. During WWII, the library was managed by high-ranking SS Guard and national socialist Paul Heigl, who ordered looted material to be kept in the library — much of which has since been returned.
Juliana Village Activities Program – October 2018
Carnuntum archaeological park - One of the highlights of Austria’s Roman relics, the Carnuntum archaeological park reveals history in these wonderful ruins, where you can walk in the footsteps of emperors. The Roman City Quarter, the Military City’s Amphitheatre and the Museum Carnuntum are all available to see, with in-depth guided tours available.
Rathaus- Home to the mayor of the city, Vienna’s City Hall is a splendid
limestone building of neo-Gothic style, situated in the Innere Stadt district, opposite the Rathauspark. Friedrich von Schmidt was the architect behind the design, beginning construction in 1872. It is made up of five towers and covers an area of over 19,000 square metres.
Austrian Parliament- Many secrets lie in the walls of this historic
landmark, where Austria’s most prominent political figures over centuries have worked. Not only is its past interesting, but the architecture is too — both inside and out. Guided tours are available, giving members of the public a chance to admire the lavishly decorated interior which features carved marble figures and Frieze paintings.
Juliana Village Activities Program – October 2018
Albertina-The Albertina has been
a treasure trove of the finest art collections since 1805. This noble Neo-classical Viennese palace was taken over from the Habsburg dynasty in 1919 by the Austrian Republic, giving it the name of Albertina Graphic Art Collection. The collection is extensive, featuring works from Monet, Degas, and Picasso.
The Salzburg Catacombs/St Peter’s Monastery- With some of
the gravestones dating back to 1288, this beautiful and peaceful site is one of the oldest cemeteries in Salzburg. Among the notable historical figures laid to rest in the grounds of the monastery is Maria Anna Mozart (Mozart’s older sister). The catacombs, carved
into Mönchsberg rock, are one of the primary reasons for visiting the site.
Burgtheater- Erected
under the order of the infamous Habsburg Empire, this impressive landmark was
Juliana Village Activities Program – October 2018
the official Imperial Court Theatre, built in 1741 next door to the palace. Europe’s second oldest theatre, today it accommodates over 400,00 audience members annually. Gustav Klimt and his brother Ernst Klimt contributed to the decoration of the interior, painting two of the staircases in Imperial-style magnificence.
Salzburg Cathedral-Austria
contains many wonderful monumental Baroque-style buildings, and, architecturally, this is one of the most impressive. Visitors are first met with a domineering marble façade, peered down upon by four statues of apostles and Salzburg’s patron saints. Many treasures are hiding inside, including a 1300 Bronze Baptismal Basin in which a little-known composer called Mozart was christened as well as a decorative organ.
Traditional Austrian Food
Tafelspitz
One of the most typical of Viennese dishes: veal or beef boiled in broth. Good-quality beef, a few vegetables, aromatic spices and plenty of water to cook in – these are the vital ingredients. Served with roast potatoes, a bread and horseradish mix, green beans in a dill sauce, or creamed spinach and chive sauce.
Martinigansl
Traditionally this roast goose dish is only offered in restaurants for a few weeks in October and November, and is considered something very special. The roast goose can be stuffed with chestnuts and dried plums, and is traditionally served with red cabbage and potato dumplings. It's fatty and very filling, but delicious when done well.
Juliana Village Activities Program – October 2018
Potato goulash
This traditional Viennese dish is not made with beef, but with sausages. The potatoes are slow cooked and the juice tends to be thicker and “creamier” than Hungarian beef goulash. It’s not as spicy as the Hungarian version, and is delicately flavoured with caraway and paprika. Usually eaten with sour cream and bread to mop up all the goodness.
Tiroler Gröstl
This bacon, onion and potato fry-up is perfect after skiing and hiking and tastes great served with a fried egg. Traditionally, it's a delicious and satisfying way of using up yesterday’s leftovers. It makes a great shared-from-the-pan mountain lunch, particularly when paired with a separate pan of Kaiserschmarren - a thick shredded pancake served with fruit
compote.
Kärntner Kasnudeln
These delicious cheese noodles from Carinthia can be drizzled with butter or complimented by a topping of your choice. In Carinthia, people like to top their Kasnudeln with melted ‘Sasaka’. This is made from pork lard, finely diced bacon, and raw onion. It’s also served as a spread on rye bread and can be served as an appetiser.
Fleischlaberl mit Kartoffelpüree
These spicy Austrian beef or veal meatballs may not look like much but they are a favourite among Austrians and once you’ve tasted them you’ll know why. Served with creamy mashed potato, this dish is true comfort food. Best enjoyed with a glass of cold Austrian Grüner Veltliner wine.
Steirisches Wurzelfleisch
This pork pot roast, made with lean pork neck and belly filet, is a favourite from Styria, served with grated apple, horseradish and caraway potatoes.
Käsespätzle
This humble dish is Austria’s answer to macaroni cheese, but it tastes so good after a walk in the mountains, washed down with a
Juliana Village Activities Program – October 2018 mug of beer. The egg noodles are made by hand, the cheese is usually Emmenthal or gruyere, and the dish is topped with crispy onions and chives.
Wachauer Marillenknödel
The mild climate and fertile soil of the Wachau Valley not only produces outstanding white wines; they are also perfect for fruit-growing. When the apricots are ripe, they are perfect for making these delicious dumplings.
Viennese Apfelstrudel
This fine apple dessert once travelled an extensive route from Arabia via the Ottoman Empire and Turkey, before taking up residence in Vienna. Ideally the paper-thin dough should be mixed and stretched by hand, the raisins soaked in rum, and nuts are optional.
