We will have a great program. WithIrving Blackman, speaking on the “TaxSecrets of the Wealthy”, this might be theyear we finally need that kind ofinformation. Plus, another speaker isTom Tuschman from Omnisource, one ofthe leading scrap recycling companies inNorth America, handling over sixmillion tons of Ferrous and 250 milliontons of Non-Ferrous metals annually.Tom will give us his perspective on thecurrent and future scrap market. I amsure he will help us get some answers towhere the steel industry is headed in thenext 6 - 12 months.
This is my last official meeting as thePresident of the NASPD, it has been agreat time and I want to thank you forletting me work for you. From the verybeginning, it has been a pleasure workingwith Susannah, Nancy and now Gail. Youall have truly made my job easy. I want tothank your for your hard work anddedication to our organization - you arestars in my book. I would also like tothank the past Presidents who havehelped me get through this job with onlya few wounds. You raised the bar high andI hope that I hold your high standard. We are all very excited about the program
in Scottsdale. Thanks to a lot of input
from many members including, Jason
Rubenstein, Gerald Merfish and in
particular Fred and Ted Kahn, we have
developed a stellar program. Their input
is so valuable to the end result of our
program and ultimately to the s ccess of
our meetings. I want to encourage
everyone to share ideas with me on
potential future speakers. I have been
very proud of the kinds of speakers we
have been able to bring to our programs
and I want to maintain and even improve
that standard. To do it I will need
everyone’s thoughts and ideas. Often it
takes a member calling in a favor from a
friend in the industry to get some of these
speakers and Fred and Ted Kahn have
called in many a favor for our benefit. I
want to thank them in particular and ask
all our members to join them in their
effort. We have a lot of exciting activities
u
planned for Scottsdale and I hope
everyone is going to take advantage of
them. We were able to secure a very low
rate at the fabulous Four Seasons resort
and the airfare is as low as I’ve seen it in
years. For very little investment, our
members are able to come to a
breathtaking location and learn very
timely information about their industry.
These meetings are what separates
business people who want to learn and
adjust to the ever changing market and
those who are trying to do business as
usual in a very different world. Our goal is
to give you the competitive advantage of
information and thought provoking
dialogue.
Another advantage of membership is our

this service so far, don’t let another day go

by. Your competitors are online, you
should be too. This service allows all our
members to know who has the pipe they
are looking for. You may find you are
doing business with members you had
not known well in the past.
Together we are all stronger and we at the
NASPD are here to help you make that
connection.

Alliance Lessons Fromthe Giants
Oh, So You Want Me To ShipIt To the Manufacturer?
“Alliances are an essential part of ourfuture - everyone needs to ”This is the point Eli Lilly and CompanyChairman, Sidney Taurel stated at a2003 annual strategic al l ianceconference.
Lilly, founded in 1876 enjoys $11.1billion in annual sales in 158 countriesworldwide. Lilly developed its firstcollaboration in 1921 with theUniversity of Toronto to bring insulininto the marketplace.
Lilly subscribes to a three-dimensionalfit for selecting their alliancepartners:
•Cultural fit to determine howcompatible are the managementteams and cultures.
• Strategic fit to determine howwell aligned are the partners’objectives.
• Operational fit to determine howcomplementary are the businessmodels.
You too, can apply the above idea as youdetermine the best fit for organizationswith which you desire to build strategicalliances.

Below, you will find the first paragraphs of a 822 word article adapted from my new book,There is a link to the rest of the article at the end.Customer Service Screw Ups.
The following is a true story. It illustratesthe need for even management to be niceto their customers - for a variety ofreasons.
The brothers Long star ed a drug store inNorthern California a number of yearsago. By the 1970s they had built arespectable chain in the north and hadstarted expanding to SouthernCalifornia. For years, when I was in thesunglass business, I sold to this glowingchain. Throughout the 1970s and 1980sthey grew and I sold sunglasses to most oftheir stores. I really appreciated theamount of business I earned from themover the years. Also, over the years, thedepartment heads that I worked with inthe early days became store managersand one, a district manager.
t
Because of my loyalty to this particulardrug store chain, I continued doingbusiness with the store in mycommunity for years after I was nolonger in the sunglass business.
With all of that being said, one day in thelate 1990s I visited my local store toreturn a camera that I had purchased thatturned out to be defective. It was eveningand I ended up getting help from thestore’s assistant manager. While she didnot remember me, I remembered whenshe was a clerk in the cosmeticdepartment. She told me that she couldnot replace the camera because she didnot have the EXACT one in stock. Shetold me to ship it to the factory and theywould take care of it. COMPANY ALSO
RESUMES PRODUCTION
IN ALABAMA.
[Lisle, Illinois] [September 20, 2004] --I P S C O I n c . ( N Y S E / T S X : I P S )announced today it expects third quarterearnings will exceed $2.00 per dilutedshare, which is above the analystconsensus of $1.43 per share by morethan 40%. Favorable results this quarterhave been driven by continued strengthin the market with strong productdemand, resulting in higher margins.
IPSCO’s Steelworks in Mobile, Alabama, was shut down as a precautionarymeasure and to allow employees andtheir families to evacuate prior to thelandfall of Hurricane Ivan. The facilitywas safely up and running only threedays after the hurricane passed. Themanufacturing facility sustained nodamage and is operating efficiently. “Ouremployees in Mobile did an outstandingjob of minimizing the effects ofHurricane Ivan,” said David Sutherland,President and Chief Executive Officer.“The plant was well protected andproduction was returned on a very timelybasis through the fortitude anddedication of our employees.”
While we have had uninterruptedelectrical power throughout the storm,we are working with our natural gas
supplier and with the railroads to resumenormal operations and with ouremployees, most of whom evacuated thearea, to safely return to work. IPSCO’semployees, as well as logistics in theregion, have been affected by thedestruction of the storm, which willtemporarily slow the shipping ofproducts. The impact of Hurricane Ivanhas been factored into the revisedestimate for the quarter.
While we are relieved that we were notseriously affected by Ivan, we are sorry forall of those that were and will work withthe authorities to offer whatever help wecan.
