Zimmermann NoteZimmermann was a
German official, sent a letter to Mexico asking them to attack the United States.
In exchange he promised that Germany would aid them in retrieving some of the land that we took from them.

• Germany promised not to sink merchant ships with out first warning them and rescuing them.
By 1917 Germany is defeating Russia on the eastern front, they won a quick victory on the eastern front.
When they did this they used unrestricted warfare.
Sinking all ships needed, towards allied nations.
Lusitania It was a passenger ship
that was secretly
carrying
ammunitions.
A German submarine
sunk the ship.
1,198 passengers died
(128 Americans).
President Wilson
demanded that
Germany apologize
and pay for the
damage that had
been done.
They fired without any
warning, passengers on
the ship had no idea what
was coming there way.

Pan German, unit German speaking people.
Pan Slavic, unit all Slavic speaking people.
In Bosnia 95% speak Slavic language but controlled by German speaking Austria.
Imperialism
• European Nations started competing for colonies.
• They thought that ‘bigger was better’.
• Areas of conflict were: Africa, Bosnia, Alsace and Lorraine.
Militarism Building up strong willed people for the military. • Military was built for two
reasons,– Protect there colonies.
– Peer pressure
• They used mandatory draft to accomplish this.
• Russia had the largest army, Germany the best trained, and Britain had the largest navy.
Alliances Alliances are forming partnership with other nations.
– Allies: Britain, France, Russia (United States).
– Central Powers: Germany, Austria, Ottoman Empire.
TRENCH WARFARE
• To protect their positions and to cut down the losses on both sides of dug trenches.
• During the night supplies were brought, at dawn war began.
• Problems in the trenches were; tons of mud, rats, horrible smell, bodies rotting, unable to stay dry, maggots, and lice diseases.
General Pershing led the U.S troops into war.
U.S in World War One
• By 1917 Germany controlled: Belgium, Italy and North France• 1918 Russia has a Revolution and drop out of the war.• Now Germany can concentrate on Western Front.• July 1918 the U.S have 1 million troops in war.• Cut of German Rail Lines, which supply their troops.• Attack through the Argonne Forest, takes 47 days and 1.2 million soldiers. • October 1918 German lines crumble.• November the allies have captured high ground and German surrenders. • The 11th hour, the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 the war finally ends!

– They must accept full responsibility.
– Took away their colonies, coal field, areas of Alsace and Lorraine.
• Created the League of Nations.
– An organization of nations established at the end of WW1 to maintain world stability.
New Nations were created.
•Russia= Finland, Latvia, Lithuanian, Estonia and Poland.
•Austria/Hungary= Czechoslovakia, and Yugoslavia.
•Ottoman Empire divided up to be controlled by allies.
