Monthly Medical Trivia Question: What is the difference between a cold and the flu?
The flu and the common cold are both respiratory illnesses but they are caused by different viruses. Because these two types of illnesses have similar flu-like symptoms, it can be difficult to tell the difference between them based on symptoms alone. In general, the flu is worse than the common cold, and symptoms such as fever, body aches, extreme tiredness, and dry cough are more common and intense. Colds are usually milder than the flu. People with colds are more likely to have a runny or stuffy nose. Colds generally do not result in serious health problems, such as pneumonia, bacterial infections, or hospitalizations.

Fever Fever is rare with a cold Fever is usually present with the flu in up to 80% of all flu cases. A temperature of 100°F or higher for 3 to 4 days is
associated with the flu.
Coughing A hacking, productive (mucus- producing) cough is often present with a cold.
A non-productive (non-mucus producing) cough is usually present with the flu (sometimes referred to as dry cough). .
Aches Slight body aches and pains can be part of a cold.
Severe aches and pains are common with the flu.
Stuffy Nose Stuffy nose is commonly present with a cold and typically resolves spontaneously within a
week. Stuffy nose is not commonly present with the flu.

Chills Chills are uncommon with a cold. 60% of people who have the flu experience chills.
Tiredness Tiredness is fairly mild with a cold. Tiredness is moderate to severe with the flu.
Sneezing Sneezing is commonly present with a cold. Sneezing is not common with the flu.
Sudden Symptoms
Cold symptoms tend to develop over a few days.
The flu has a rapid onset within 3-6 hours. The flu hits hard and includes sudden symptoms like high fever, aches and
pains.
Headache A headache is fairly uncommon with a cold. A headache is very common with the flu, present in 80% of flu cases.
Sore Throat Sore throat is commonly present with a cold. Sore throat is not commonly present with the flu.
Chest Discomfort
Chest discomfort is mild to moderate with a cold. Chest discomfort is often severe with the flu.
Remember the 24-Hour Rule of Thumb
Students may return to school after:
• 24hourswithouttemperature(andwithouttakingfevermedications)• 24hourswithoutnausea,vomitingordiarrhea(andtolerationofnormaldiet)• 24hoursofreceivingmedication(suchasantibiotics,eyeointment.etc.)

Thecoldandfluseasonisuponus—thisisthetimeofyearwhenschoolsexperiencetheirhighestlevelsofabsences.Whileweareanticipatingaminimumnumberofabsencesduetoillnessduringthistime,IthoughtitmightbehelpfultoremindyouoftheRMSattendanceprocedures.
AbsenceFromSchool
Ifyourchildwillnotbeinschoolonaparticularday,youshouldcalltheRMSSafeArrivalLine(610)688-0930toinformusthatyourchildwillnotbeinschoolthatday.Iftheschoolisnotnotifiedonthedayofyourchild’sabsence,anautocallismadetoyourhometoverifythestudent’sabsenceandtodeterminethereason.
Ifyourchildwillbeabsentmorethanthreedays,wewillcollectworkforyourchilduponrequest.YoumayrequestthehomeworkbycallingtheSafeArrivalline.
Whenyourchildreturnstoschool,he/sheshouldhaveanofficialabsenceexcusecardexplainingthereasonforhis/herabsence.
LatenessToSchool
Pleasemakeeveryefforttohaveyourchildtoschoolontimeeveryday.Whileweunderstandtherewillbetimeswhenyourchildmaybelateduetoillness,medicalappointments,weatherconditionsorrecognizedreligiousservices,undernormalcircumstancesstudentsshouldbeatschoolby8:00a.m.Intheeventthatyourchildistardyforanyoftheabovereasons,pleasesendinaparental/guardianorphysiciannoteindicatingthereasonforthelatenessandhaveyourchildsignintoschoolattheattendanceoffice.YoumayalsocalltheRMSSafeArrivalLine.
Tardinessisunexcused,however,whenyourchild’slatenessisnotverifiedbyawrittennoteorphonecall.Examplesofunexcusedlatenesstoschoolincludebutarenotlimitedto:oversleeping,missingthebus,personaltransportationproblems,etc.Fiveormoreunexcusedtardiestoschoolwillresultintheassignmentofdetentions.
EarlyDismissalFromSchool
Foranystudentwhoneedstobedismissedfromschoolearly,pleasesendanoteinwithyourchildandhavehim/hershowittotheirteachertouseaspasstogotothemainofficefordismissal.Inacasewhereyoudidnotsendanotewithyourchild,pleasecallouroffice(610)386-6300ext7506soweareabletohaveyourchildwaitingforyouwhenyouarrive.

The two events used to be held on different evenings,however,wearetryingtostreamlinethisprocessforparentsthisyear. Winterfest will enable you and your child to speak torepresentativesfromvarioushighschooldepartmentsandactivities inan informal setting. There will be opportunities to speak with RHSguidanceandadministrativepersonnelaswell.

CrossroadsStudiestheCultureofOurNationBySofiaDillon,GabyHeberling,GrantHeberling,andCaraRuggieri.
ThismonthinCrossroadswasverybusy.WitheverythingfromthefieldtriptotheLackawannaCoalMine,towrappingupwithexcellentindividualpresentations,all43studentscontributedgreateffortandideaswhilelearningaboutthecultureofournation.
ThestudentsinCrossroadssplitupintoeightgroupsandeachreadabookthatshowedtheprocessofimmigrationfromadifferentpartoftheworld.Crossroadsalsotookthreefieldtripswhilestudyingthecultureofournation.ThefirstfieldtripwastotheLackawannaCoalMineandEckleyMiner’sVillagewherewelearnedhowtheimmigrantminersandtheirfamiliesstruggledthroughthechallengesoflifebothinandoutofthemines.Thestudentsgottoexperienceawalkthroughacoalmineandinsideacoalminer’shomes.
ThesecondfieldtripwetookwastoTheConstitutionCenterwherewestudiedtheBillOfRights,boththroughplayingsomefungamesandreadingsomehistoricaldocumentswhereConstitutionalrightswere(orwerenot)applied.
WealsowenttotheTenementMuseuminNewYorkCitywherewelearnedaboutlifeinarealtenementhouse.Ifwedidn’talreadyknowitfromourearlierlearningexperiences,wefoundouttherehowhardtheimmigrants’liveswere.ThenwetookaferrytoEllisIslandwherewegottoseehowtheimmigrantswereprocessedbeforestartingtheirnewlivesinAmerica.
EachCrossroadsstudentsalsointerviewedanimmigranttotheUnitedStates.Wehadtopreparethequestions,conducttheinterview,andtakenotesonwhatwelearned.Then,wewroteanessayanddidaninformationalpresentationonourimmigrantsubject.Eachstudentinterviewedadifferentimmigrant,andtheirstorieswereincredible.
Westudentsalsodidagrouppresentation.EachtablegroupresearchedtheexperienceofadifferentculturalgroupwithintheUnitedStatesandlearnedthepushandpullfactorsoftheirimmigrationstoriesandwhatlifewaslikeforthemasnewimmigrantsinAmerica.Eachgrouphadtodosomethingtomaketheirpresentationcreative.
OverallthestudentsinCrossroadslearnedsomuchfromthisexperienceandnowhaveabetterappreciationforourAmericancultureandhowit’sbeenshapedbybothourFoundingFathersandthemanyimmigrantswhocametoournationafterthem.

We wish to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped with our annual holiday gift drive for the Delaware County Children and Youth Center. Not only did we provide many, many
individual gifts for children ages 6-13, we also provided gifts for families, as RMS families "adopted" a family through the Center. Six 8th grade RMS students helped deliver the gifts mid-
December to a very grateful Children and Youth staff.
