Nearly Famous!Did anyone recognize some of
the Garston Team on BBC's Animal
Park Easter Special in April?
Not only do we treat many of the
livestock and pets in Wiltshire and
Somerset, but since the first lions
arrived 50 years ago, we've also had
the privilege of providing
veterinary care to the
incredible animals at
Longleat Safari Park.
Presenters Kate Humble and Ben
Fogle, returned to Longleat to
film a major new fifteen-part
series of Animal Park to celebrate
the 50th anniversary of the safari
park. The first five of the forty
five minute episodes of this new
series, aired over the Easter
holidays, but don't worry if you
missed it, as the remaining ten
episodes are due for broadcast
on BBC1 over the summer!
Another Branch to our Tree!
Our fifth small animal surgery was officially opened on
Monday 3rd April 2017 by the chair of 'Melksham Without
Parish', Councillor Richard Wood and the Melksham Town
Crier, Peter Dauncy.
The new surgery will be mainly run by our Trowbridge
vets, Andrew Simmons and Nick Hill, offering both
routine and emergency appointments.
Our qualified nurses will provide a wide range of clinics
● Guidance on new puppy and kitten ownership
● Weight management ● Post-operative care
● Nail clipping ● Anal gland emptying
● Garston Wellness Plans ● Dentistry
● Parasites plus lots more
Many of these nurse clinics are free of charge.
In addition, we offer clients a free transfer service in our
well-equipped, air-conditioned animal ambulance to
our Trowbridge surgery for their pets' routine surgical
procedures. We also stock a lovely selection of pet
products and diets, so next time you're nearby pop
in and say 'hello' to our Melksham team.
Just to Say Thank YouWe are very lucky here at Garston Veterinary
Group to have a number of staff who have
been with us for over ten years, including our
Trowbridge surgery receptionist Helen Elkins.
She celebrates her 25th year on reception!
Our Trowbridge small animal partner
Andrew Simmons, presented Helen with
a necklace that she had chosen.
Helen, tell us a bit about life at the front desk.
"We deal with emergencies as well as book
appointments, so every day is different and
we never know what's going to happen from
one minute to the next. The only thing that
is certain, are regular appointments such as
vaccinations and routine check-ups.
The team are very friendly and we get on
well. Sometimes the job can be really sad.
It can be emotional when you see sick animals
that don't get better, but there is elation
when they go home happy and healthy"

If you suspect your rabbit has FLYSTRIKE this is a real emergency, so contact us immediately!
Rabbit TalkSummer and with it buzzing flies,
which pose an enormous threat to our
bob-tailed friends. Flystrike is a serious
and life-threatening condition that can
affect rabbits very quickly. Flies are
attracted to wounds, sore skin, moist
and soiled hindquarters of a rabbit,
where they lay eggs. The result is
hatching maggots literally feeding on
the rabbit's skin and underlying tissue!
In warm weather, please check your
rabbit at least once a day
● Ensure they are clean, egg and
maggot free.
● Remove soiled bedding and
waste daily.
● Clean hutches frequently.
At higher risk are unhealthy, less active and elderly
rabbits, plus those that cannot groom properly due
to obesity or overgrown teeth and claws.
