INTRODUCTION TO SOCIAL SCIENCES
HONOR OR DISGRACE??
• Nursing is a major component of Pakistan's health-care system
• As of 2009, it has been the subject of much scholarly discussion amongst academics and practitioners
• Pakistan is a third-world developing country and is a patriarchal society
SCENARIO
• It holds absolutely no prestigious value
• Most of the time, nursing is not allowed to be a career option for many middle and upper-class families
• If you are a doctor, you will get respect and status, as a nurse you will not
• Such view of nursing has caused huge shortage of nurses
DOUBLE BINDS SUPPRESSION
Not accepted from family
Not accepted in work environment
MEDIA ROLES
• The highly acclaimed feature film M*A*S*H released in 1970,ran for 11 years
• M*A*S*H followed the daily trials of doctors working in a mobile Army surgical hospital close to enemy lines during the Korean War
• One of the show's most colorful characters was Major Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan, an army nurse
• In 2009, Showtime premiered Nurse Jackie (Edie Falco)
• Jackie is a dark character full of flaws
• We see her committing various felonies
• In 1975, the classic motion picture One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest hit the silver screen

CONCLUSION
• In Pakistan, nursing will always be considered a lowly profession until the society gives it the respect it deserves
• For that change to become a reality, there desperately needs to be a cultural shift in people’s thinking
