Internet of ThingsKim Stephen Neil Z. BerbanoECOMMER K32
Who is the Father of IoT? Kevin Ashton ( in 1999), British
Entrepreneur Geared to improve automation in
nearly all imaginable fields through connectivity and networks
Definition
IoT is often defined as; “the network of physical objects or ‘things’ embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and network connectivity, which enables these objects to collect and exchange data”
Implications to Society
From Machine to machine (M2M) to IoT There will be a HUGE shift in interaction
among non-living objects through sensors and web-activity
More Implications to Society Cloud-based storage The sensors stored through cloud
will be the main starting points in the interactions\
Practical Example: Traffic Through Internet of Things, there could
possibly be an interaction between CARS and STREETS! Imagine!
Trivia 87% have not heard of the term ‘Internet of
Things’ ATMs are known to be the first IoT objects, in
1974 Back in 2008, more objects have already
been linked in the Internet than people In 2015, there will already be 4.9 billion
connected things In 2020, people are predicting that there will
be more than 50 billion connected Internet things
2 years from now… (reflection) As a personal reflection, I must admit
that this is the first time I’ve heard of the Internet of Things. Honestly speaking, it’s so futuristic, yet at the same time so realistic. Development is so critical and essential in the world of technology, that perhaps, there should always be new discoveries made every once in a while, maybe every single day.
The next two years are crucial for development. Though still imperfect, it will be more recognized and it will discussed in the mainstream, I think. And little do we know, 5 or 7 years down the line, it will already be upon us, without us even knowing. It’s all so scary, yet amazing. It gives me goose bumps just knowing that this kind of technology is already dawning.
