Dear Graduate Students,
Congratulations on your admission to NUS! We are glad that
you have chosen NUS to pursue your graduate studies and
extend a very warm welcome to you. For returning graduates
of NUS, welcome back to your alma mater.
For those new to NUS and especially our international students,
our Office of Students’ Affairs (OSA) has put in place an
orientation programme that will assist you to settle in as quickly and as effortlessly as
possible. Should you need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact the staff
of OSA or the Student Service Centre at the Yusof Ishak House. We will endeavour to assist
you as best as we can during this transition period.
As graduate students, your next few years in NUS will be busy ones, as you pursue your
research or coursework. Graduate studies generally come with a greater flexibility in terms
of academic schedules, as you embark on a more independent mode of learning. Indeed,
the tendency of many graduate students is to focus entirely on their research and other
academic activities. This is rightly so, given the exciting research environment in NUS and
your primary objective for joining our graduate schools. However, I hope that you will also
consider infusing your university life with other interests that provide personal enrichment
and fulfillment beyond academic pursuits. These may be in the form of community, social,
cultural or sports activities that are organized by various students’ organizations on campus
such as the Graduate Students’ Society. Participation in such activities will enable you to
network with students of different nationalities and disciplines, and hone in your people
skills. It has also been said that inspirations for good ideas in research often lie outside the
formal classroom or laboratory setting!
We wish you all the best.
Yours sincerely,
Associate Professor Tan Teck Koon
Dean of Students

23 INTRODUCTION TO SINGAPORE
graduate international student guide
An Island RepublicSingapore is a small tropical island with over
63 surrounding islets, which together form a
total land area of 685 km2. It lies just 1 degree
north of the equator.
LanguagesThere are 4 official languages - Malay,
Chinese (Mandarin), Tamil and English. Malay
is the national language and English is the
language of administration as well as the
main medium of instruction in schools and
other educational institutions.
Singapore’s multi-racial & multi lingual culture
has brought a diversity of festivals celebrated
throughout the year. This includes Chinese
New Year, Deepavali, Christmas and Hari
Raya. For more information, please refer to
www.visitsingapore.com
HistoryLocated at the tip of the Malay Peninsula,
Singapore was first called “Temasek” or “Sea
Town”. According to a legend, a 14th century
Sri Vijayan prince saw an animal he mistook
for a lion on the island and Singapore’s modern
day name “Singa Pura” (meaning “Lion City”)
came about.
In 1819, Sir Stamford Raffles founded
Singapore and established a trading station
so that the British could refit, feed and protect
the fleet of their growing empire. Independence
as a sovereign, democratic nation was attained
on 9 August 1965.
ClimateSingapore’s climate is warm and humid, with
slight variations between the average minimum
of 23°C and maximum of 33°C. Rain falls
throughout the year but more frequently during
the monsoon season from November to January.
Social CulturePeople are expected to form queues to either
board buses, or to wait for service. It is impolite
to push ahead of someone who is in the queue
ahead of you. Do be punctual. Allow yourself
sufficient time to travel. It is also considered
impolite to miss an appointment. Address the
people you meet with titles such as Mr, Mrs,
Miss, Dr or Professor unless you are invited
to use their first names.
PopulationSingapore has a multi-racial, multi-lingual
resident population of about 4.2 million people.
Chinese constitute 77% of the population, the
Malays 15% and the Indians 6%. Other ethnic
groups make up the remaining 2%.
24INTRODUCTION TO SINGAPORE...

DrugsDrug abuse is viewed seriously. The trafficking,
manufacturing, importing or exporting of
drugs carries a death penalty. Unauthorised
consumption also carries a heavy penalty.
Goods and Service Tax (GST)A 5% Goods and Services Tax is levied on all
services and goods imported into Singapore.
BargainingBargaining is not normally practiced in
Singapore shops. The prices marked are the
prices at which the goods are sold.
Food CultureA common init ial greeting amongst
Singaporeans is “Have you eaten yet?”
Singaporeans love to eat, more so with such a
wide variety of food offered in different settings.
Food centres in local neighbourhoods or air-
conditioned food courts located conveniently
in shopping complexes offer you a wide variety
of dishes.
When dining at a food court or hawker center,
get a table, note the table number and then
look at the pictures at the stall to order. Give
the stall operator your table number and wait
for your food to be delivered before making
payment. Do take note that some stalls are
self-service and you are expected to make
payment, wait and bring the food to your table.
LitteringSingapore has strict laws against littering.
SmokingSmoking is prohibited in most buildings and
public areas, especially if in enclosed or air-
conditioned areas.
What to wearIn tropical Singapore, loose and light summer
clothing is recommended especially for
outdoor activities. Please note that in lecture
theatres, libraries and administrative offices,
you should be appropriately attired. Improper
attire includes shorts, slippers and clothing
with indecent words or pictures.
TippingTipping is not necessary as a service charge
of 10% is normally levied at restaurants, hotels
and other establishments. A tip should only
be exercised in instances where the bill does
not include a service charge.
