Writing Practice
Directions: In this part, you are supposed to write a three-paragraph composition on the title The Profession I Should Like to Follow. The first sentence of each paragraph is given. Your part of writing should be no less than 100 words. Remember to write neatly.
The Profession I Should Like to Follow In this society, there are many professions for us to choose from. _________________. Among them, I like teaching best._________________. Teachers need to have a wide range of knowledge. ___________. (Note: The word “teaching” in the second paragraph can be changed with whatever profession you like in the future. And the topic sentence in the third paragraph should therefore be changed likewise, with the basic requirements you think is necessary to succeed in that profession.)
The Profession I Should Like to FollowIn this society, there are many professions for us to choose from. For
example, we can be a worker, teacher, sportsman, writer, journalist, doctor, sailor, singer or inventor.
Among them, I like teaching best. Therefore when I graduate from university, I wish to become a teacher. Teaching is the most important and noblest profession in the world. To be a teacher, I can serve the people. Of all the ingredients of success none is more decisive than education, the cultivation of intellectual powers. Whether a country is strong or weak depends on the general level of education of her citizens. Therefore, teachers play an important part in society.
Teachers need to have a wide range of knowledge. This is why I have to work hard in all my subjects. I should remember that knowledge is a matter of scientific learning and no dishonesty or conceit is permissible. On the contrary, what is required is honesty and modesty. I hope I can become a successful teacher.
Sample Writing:
The fllowing is a short description of the character of the woman in the story. Try to end the second and third paragraphs with a concluding sentence, each giving a summary of what the paragraph has said or offering an opinion regarding the ideas in the paragraph.
The woman in the story can be characterized as selfish and hypocritical. Let me explain why.
It strikes me that she thought only of her own gratification without any consideration for her host’s embarrassment. As it appears the woman had some idea about what circumstances the young man was in, yet in her eagerness to gratify her appetite she asked for one high-priced dish after another. ___________________________________________________
And each tie she wanted something ordered, she would repeat her assertions that she never ate anything for lunch or never ate more than one thing. As it turned out, however, she overloaded her stomach with expensive food._______________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________
So it seems fitting to describe her as “selfish”.
Form this it can be seen that “hypocritical” is another apt label for
the woman
Look at the picture below and try to find out as much information as possible. Write a short piece telling what the picture is about. The first sentence is written for you.
Sam went to the cinema the other night, but he didn’t enjoy it.
Entering the cinema, Sam thought of taking off his coat. But the cinema turned out to be very cold and he had to keep his coat on. As there wasn’t much space between the rows, his legs began to ache shortly after he took his seat. Worst still, he found it difficult to breathe easily. Looking about, he saw a lot pf people were smoking.
At last the film started. To his annoyance, the person in front was wearing such a big hat that he could hardly see the screen. To top it all, people all around him made a lot of noise, some telling jokes, others laughing loudly, not to mention a child crying out with displeasure. Needless to say, Sam missed most of the dialogue. He couldn’t bear to sit out the rest of the film and went out of the cinema into the cold night in a fury.
