BADEN-WUERTTEMBERGThe land (federal state) Baden-Wuerttemberg is located in the southwest of the Federal Republic of Germany. It borders France, Switzerland and the German states of Rhineland Palatinate, Hesse and Bavaria. Baden-Wuerttemberg is one of Europe‘s leading technology regions and the 3rd largest ofthe 16 federal states, the population is 11 million (including 1.7 million foreigners).
The GDP in 2017 was about 493 billion Euros (about 15 % of Germany); the export rate is about 41 %. The annual budget of the state is about 47 billion Euros. The budget for higher education is about 4.2 billion Euros. Baden-Wuerttemberg is also the leading region in Germany for education and research. The state supports about 80 universities with a total of around 360.000 students.Around 14 % (49.000 students) are international students coming from countries of the EuropeanUnion (30 %), Asia (30 %), other European countries (20 %), America (10 %) and Africa (10 %).The public universities are the dominant institutions; around 50 % study at one of the 9 Research Universities and around 33 % are enrolled at one of the 19 Universities of Applied Sciences. The various private universities cover around 5 % of all students and around 3 % of the international students.
Compared to other states in Germany the economic situation of Baden-Wuerttemberg is rather good. Culture, landscapes, cities are quite often charming; the social situation and the contentment of thepopulation is relatively good. Eclectic examples are: in Baden-Wuerttemberg you will nd the highest density of gourmet restaurants and the highest total of spas and therapeutic baths of Germany. Also the political situation in Baden-Wuerttemberg is unique: since 2011 the government (re-elected 2016) is led by the ecological party (Alliance 90/The Greens) and that is unrivaled in Germany, Europe and maybe worldwide.

The city Pforzheim (Latitude 48.54 North – Longitude 8.42 East) is located in an industrial region at the northern edge of the Black Forest. The population of the city (126.000) and the county Enzkreis (198.000) is about 325.000 inhabitants. In the city the ratio of inhabitants with a migrantbackground is 54 %. The city is close to Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Baden-Baden and Strasbourg (France). The closest international airport is Stuttgart (40 minutes).
Founded as a Roman settlement (Portus 90 a.c.), Pforzheim became a medieval city in 1080 and the residence of the Badenia‘s margraves (1220). When the margraves moved to Durlach and the newly built Karlsruhe, the city got, as a kind of compensation, an orphanage (1718). Some years later (1768)the latter became a manufactory for jewellery and watchmaking - the incubator for the future industrial development. Pforzheim became a prosperous city and the center of jewellery industries inEurope. In World War II (1945) Pforzheim was nearly completely destroyed by one of the most devasta-ting area bombardments. After the war the city had lost half of the population (from 90.000 to 45.000). In rebuilding the city its former architectural and urban quality was not relevant. The fast growing city and its industries needed workers and migrant workers. Pforzheim became one of the cities with the highest ratio of foreigners in Germany. Since the 1980‘s many companies in the jewellery, watchmaking, mechanical and electronic industries closed or moved to other countries. Pforzheim lost its prestige, a partly ambivalent city culture became more evident. On the one side unemployment and the fear to lose the job, income, social acceptance and on the other side still many rich families with a luxury lifestyle. Towards students the city is open-minded. All students have free access to the public transport system. Student organizations oer various events. International students like the city for being a good starting point to travel by trains/ights and all kind of cultural or sportive events are in relatively easy reach.see also:www.pforzheim.de and/or www.enzkreis.de
