Wow! What a term! We’ve had terrific GCSE and A Level success and our new Year 7 settled in and made the most out of Nell Bank. We have held Languages Week; Open Day; Community Dodgeball tournaments; exchange trips to France and a visit to the Belgium battlefields. You took part in Children in Need (raising a whopping £5114), helped run the school as part of Takeover Challenge Day and gave an outstanding
school performance of Oliver! All these activities have been in addition to your day to day focus on lessons. There has been impressive work from so many of you and a chance to review your progress with your tutor on Review Day, setting your SMART
targets for next term as we move forward into 2016.
You definitely deserve a well earned break over the two week Christmas holiday! However, before we break up, there are a few more things to look forward to...
There is another chance to get involved with charity fundraising on Friday 11th December...it’s Christmas Jumper Day! Make the world better with a sweater, pay £1 to your tutor for the privilege of wearing your festive knitwear, the tackier the better,
and raise money for Save the Children.
During lunch time on the day, there will be the chance to take part in our Community Catwalk,
with community points up for grabs!
We wish our Year 11 students all the very best as they get ready to
bury themselves in books...yes it’s revision time as mock exams start in January. We understand
it can be a stressful time for you...and your parents, but rest assured we know what you are
going through and we are here to support you. Good luck and do
your best!
Don’t forget to join us for our Countdown to Christmas, a celebration of festive music,
songs and drama at All Saints’ Church on Monday 14th
December.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Ms Williams

Consider Yourself…One of Us! We opened our three night run of Oliver on Wednesday 2nd December, directed by Ms Ramrattan, to rousing applause. From the opening scene, with the workhouse children singing ‘Food Glorious Food’, dreaming of the food they would love to eat in order to get them through the reality of eating their gruel, to the show stopping, all cast final rendition of ‘Consider Yourself’...the audience were transfixed!
The quality of the singing, dancing, stage management, acting and orchestra was exceptional. It was almost difficult to comprehend Oliver was being performed by students aged 11-18! The chorus was harmonious, the solos pitch perfect and the action moved the crowd from full on belly laughs to tender, tear jerking moments.
Oliver, played beautifully by Jamie Rimmington (8ELC), hooked the audience from the onset. From daring to ask for more he sang and acted his way through Oliver’s life in the workhouse, as part of Fagin’s gang and his desperate search to feel wanted in the world.
The early introduction of Bumble, played by Harri Pitches (13AH), and the object of his affection Widow Corney, Natasha Wills (13NPG) brought a fantastic comedy double act to the show. Their rendition of ‘I Shall Scream’ providing a little light relief against the dreary workhouse backdrop.
The comedic focus then shifted to the Sowerberrys, the undertaker family to whom Oliver is sold, and their tremendous macabre rendition of ‘That’s Your Funeral’ by the meek and mild Mr Sowerberry, Elliot Thompson (9LAM) and his overpowering harpie of a wife Alice Saunders (13PC).

Oliver’s meeting with the Artful Dodger, Matthew Hodson (9DSF) included a fun and cheeky rendition of ‘Consider Yourself’. Characters from the darker side of Victorian life were introduced to the performance, as Fagin, Lucy Carter (13JLI) entered the story. The audience were treated to an amazing character performance of the wizened gang leader, played with tremendous timing, impact and comedy by the sixth form student.
The second act opened with a riotous version of ‘Oom Pah Pah’ seeing the full cast on stage in rousing chorus; it was a fun, sing along number to keep everyone entertained.

The ill-fated love affair between the dark and foreboding Bill Sykes, Ethan Thompson (12AJK) and the warm hearted, down trodden Nancy, Leona McLoughlin (11JI) was played out beautifully. Ethan’s characterisation never gave any doubt to Bill’s threatening and murderous intent. Leona sang her heart out and her performance of the heart-breaking ‘As Long as He Needs Me’ was sung with emotion and understanding, way beyond her years.
The good light in the story was played out fantastically by Fin Tunney as Mr Brownlow (9LG), who with interaction with his sidekick Grimwig, Chloe Slater (13PC), paved the way for a hero to save the day.
One of the highlights of the show surely had to be Fagin’s wonderfully acted solo of ‘Reviewing the Situation’ performed brilliantly by Lucy with a stunningly timed violin solo by Almanzo McConkey (12SLG).
As the show came to a close the audience’s emotions were taken from horror and heartbreak as Bill murdered Nancy (during a spectacularly lit scene) to the heart warming scene of Oliver’s return to his family.
Our students were rewarded with a standing ovation at the end of each of
their three nights, leaving their audience asking, ‘Please Sir…can we have more?’

Mock Exams—Important Information The Exam Boards have issued a notice stating that all ‘potential’ electronic equipment is banned from exam rooms. This means that smart watches are banned alongside all mobile phones and MP3/4 players.
This rule will be strictly enforced during the mock exams taking place after Christmas.
We cannot accept responsibility for any such items. It is important students leave their possessions in their lockers, and understand that if you are caught with these items, you will be disqualified. These are national exam board rules and must be upheld.
Mr Baker, Exams Office
Theatre Trips The English department are running two trips to the Alhambra Theatre, Bradford for Year 10 students. All students will get a letter from their English teachers this week. Both trips aim to enrich the study of ‘An Inspector Calls’ and ‘Lord of the Flies’ (GCSE English set text studied by Year 10).
An Inspector Calls, Tuesday 3rd May, 2016
From Stephen Daldry, the Oscar nominated Director of The Reader, The Hours and Billy Elliot, comes the multi award-winning West End production of J.B. Priestley’s classic thriller, ‘An Inspector Calls’.
The total cost of the trip is £25 (£19 per ticket and £6 per student for the coach). Students receiving Pupil Premium are entitled to a 50% reduction (£12.50). We are aware that the cost is quite high, but the slightly less expensive tickets (£16) have a very poor view of the stage.
Lord of the Flies, Tuesday 1st March, 2016 William Golding’s 20th century classic ‘Lord of the Flies’ explodes onto the stage in a remarkable production direct from London’s award-winning Regent’s Park Theatre.
The total cost of the trip is £18 (£12 per ticket and £6 per student for the coach). Students receiving Pupil Premium are entitled to a 50% reduction (£9).
If you would like to participate in either of these trips please complete the form and hand it to your English teacher. Payment is required via Parentpay before Friday 15th January,
2016. Mr Colman

Year 10 Core PE Rugby Sport Education The Year 10 core PE curriculum is taught through student leadership in each activity block. Students are split into teams and given roles: team captain; skills coach; warm up coach; media officer and equipment officer. During the sessions students take ownership of the lessons leading and coaching teams, learning key leadership skills that can be used both in sport and other aspects of life. In the final lesson of the unit of work, the teams come together to play each other in a tournament. The recent rugby tournament showed all the Year 10 students in an excellent light. Games were played in great spirit, with excellent discipline and a high level of skill. The results can be seen below.
