Acclaimed Writer-Author Monique Pollack Visits Marymount Academy International
Montreal native and accomplished writer Monique Polack graced Marymount
Academy International with her presence on April 8, 2015. As a mother, a teacher at
Marianopolis College, freelance journalist, and fiction writer for young adults, is
there anything that Monique Polack does not do? Her passion for writing has helped
her to publish 17 novels in which many of them has led her to be awarded and
acknowledged. She is a two time recipient of the Quebec Writers' Federation Prize
for Children's and YA Literature (2009 and 2014). The students were able to
connect with her due to her charismatic, engaging, soft but direct approach. The
story of the monkey man stole the show! The monkey man was given to her mother
as a birthday gift during the Holocaust by a lady who had nothing else other than the monkey man. Although the
pendant has no monetary value, it is significantly valuable to Monique because of its historic significance and the
sentimental story behind it. As she passed around the pendant of the monkey man attached to a chain, the
students felt honoured to have touched a piece of history. As quoted by a student, “I thought it was going to be
boring, but I enjoyed it and I actually learnt something”
Share The Warmth Throughout the school year, Marymount Academy International students had the great
fortune of volunteering at Share the Warmth; Share the Warmth is a community centre
that aims at countering hunger and poverty through awakening hopes and dreams in
those they help. Volunteer students donated time throughout the school year, working
alongside other volunteers and community members. They participated in baking goods
for hungry school kids, helped to replenish food bank shelves and prepare food baskets.
Although they worked very hard, the students never wanted to leave. They were happy to help; knowing that they
were doing something to help others fulfilled their confidence. Experiencing that, nothing in the world is more re-
warding than knowing that you’ve helped someone. A special thank you to Emma Tilquin, Food Security Programs
Coordinator, Naouel Bendahmane, Human Resources Manager, Michèle Chappaz, Communications and Develop-
ment Coordinator, and Susan Mingo, Kitchen Coordinator for always welcoming us with open arms and million
dollar smiles.
P.A.M.A . Pama Foundation is a non-profit organization whose mission is to help children with
Autism Spectrum Disorders reach their full potential, children benefit from the
different services and equipment available. No matter how different we all are, we
all share one thing in common; our desire to be loved and accepted for who we
are. This is true for all people, especially people with autism. Autism Spectrum
Disorder is described as a cognitive condition, present from early childhood and
characterized by difficulty in communicating and forming relationships with other
people and in using language and decoding abstract concepts. An estimated 1 in 68
children have been identified with autism spectrum disorder. Mike Tadayon,
Marymount Academy International grade 11 student, has dedicated a great deal of effort to raise awareness and
funds throughout the school year for this cause. He worked alongside Stefania Dei Tigli, Board Certified Assistant
Behavior Analyst (BCaBA) as well as President of the PAMA foundation, Anna-Maria Macone, Board Certified
Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA) as well as director of the PAMA foundation, Linda Luca Spiritual Guidance
and Community Involvement Animator and Maya Doughan, English Teacher. Mike fundraised for the PAMA
foundation and raised 1115$.Congratulations Mike for your efforts in helping to raise awareness for people with
autism.
