this co|umn,0n our pa es abouttheGayOlympics, being completed in San Fran-cisco as of this writing. But we can reportthat the games have been a triumph, probably far exceeedin the expecta-tions ol the founders. The unex ectedgood-bad luck of having the homo-phobic U.S. Olympic Committee sue toprevent the use of the "Olympic" namemade news coverage all over the worldin papers that probably would haveotherwise ignored the happening. Itwould seem it is alri ht for everyoneelse to use the name "Olympics" exceptgays. But there are four ears to kick thataround in the courts before the nextone.
However, the pagentry we saw andphotographed for Manifest, the athletesrom a lover the country and the world,
the crowds of gays who came with themand to see them. are a beautiful storywell worth telling and remembering.
Our gay leaders were there, represen-tatives orm the political world, celebri-ties, and a few for-real Olympic athletes. The weather was magnificent mostly, the San Francisco sky has been filledwith flags, thousands of balloons, rocked with music and crowd noises, and the City was filled, as usual, withpeople from somewhere else.
Our congratulations to the many whoworked hard and long to make thisunusual Olympiad the success it was andwill continue to be, whatever they endup calling it.
