1st SUNDAY OF ADVENT
Whenever this song is being sung, voices rise up and rent the air with this beautiful song and the
lyrics are so affirmative of our readiness to await the coming of the song. You know the song I am
talking about: “Will you be ready when the lord shall come? Oh Yes, I will be ready, I will be ready, I
will be ready when the lord shall come.” Like Peter, thrice we affirmed and reiterated our
willingness to be ready when the lord shall come. Theory and practice do not always agree because
we might say that we are ready while in reality we are anything near readiness. The surprising part
is that He will come like a thief in any unexpected fashion and style that might find us
dumbfounded and running helter skelter. We are often too busy acquiring and building castles on
earth, too busy partying and having fun, eating and drinking, too busy working and investing with
little or no time to be ready for the lord. We might be caught unawares by his arrival just as people
who die during wars, terrorist attacks, earthquakes, tsunamis, flooding and accidents. Therefore,
keep watch because you do not know the time or the hour He is coming, (Mtt. 25:13) Luke
admonished that we pray so that we may have the strength to escape all these things that are
about to take place and to stand before the Son of Man (Lk 21: 36) It pays to be spiritually prepared
and ever ready for the coming of the Lord. Advent offers us such ample opportunities for
preparation for his coming. The truth is that those who wait for the Lord will gain strength. They
will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run and not get tired. They will walk and not become
weary. (Is 40:31). Have time to prepare for the coming of the Lord so that when He comes He might
find you ready and willing to go with Him.
