Timed Moodle essays:
Good practice for timed management in prep for exams
Learners can type in Word and then copy and paste their
submission
Marks are recorded in the grade book
Can be taken ‘under exam conditions’
A duplicate assignment with extra time can be made to
accommodate learners who are identified with learning
disabilities/difficulties
Unlike other Moodle quiz questions the teacher has to manual
mark it!

There are 2 parts to complete for this exercise:
STEP 1: Create your question
STEP 2: Create your quiz and add your essay quiz question.
1) Turn editing on, click into the Admin block and
Question bank. Select Essay question and click next.
2) Add a title and type in the assignment brief and instructions.
3) You can add links to websites, information pdfs, audio files and embed a video as well if you
wish.
4) Work your way through the options and design your essay assignment quiz question etc to
meet your requirements.
SAVE YOUR CHANGES.
1) Turn editing on, click to upload an activity or resource and select Quiz,
click OK.
2) Add a title and description.

Set the time limit
3) Work your way through the options and design your essay assignment with the
time and date restraints, number of questions to be answered grading system etc to meet your
requirements.
SAVE YOUR CHANGES and click SAVE AND
DISPLAY.
Click to Edit quiz, (a) find your essay question and click on the<< to add it to the quiz. (b)

When the learners click to start the quiz they are
warned that this is a timed activity.
The learner’s view of the timed essay
The time starts as soon as they
learner begins the activity.
It the learner comes out of the activity and
then returns, the time will resume counting
down from where they left off.
AND any text they have entered previously
will not be saved. On completion of the task the
learner clicks Finish Attempt.
