NIGHT RIDER BAND

Several Believed to SaveBeen Wounded by Troops

Frankfort KyJune 20Severalnight riders may have been wound ¬

ed and a body of them was epulsedbythe soldiers in an attack whichwas made op the home of Louis Kinney in Bracken county in an at¬

tempt that was made to kidnap Kinhey who was an important witnessagainst the night riders The soldiers

who were on guard at Kinneyshouse fired several Volleys at theriders and it is believed that severalwere wounded and carried off bytheir comrades

The news of the clash between thsoldiers and the night riders came toFrankfort this afternoon in a reportfrom Maj Webb who is in commandof the soldiers now on duty in Brack¬

en county Maj Webb said in hisr ort that a band of men went tKinney house about midnight lastnight and attempted to take himfrom hiss bone

They never had a chance to carrout their intentions as the soldierswho have been guarding Kinneyshome in anticipation of an attacon him promptly began shootingsoon as they saw the night riderswho fled Maj Webb says he hareason to believe that thefired by the soldiers found huma-marks

tWANTS COOPERATION

Henderson Tobacco GrowersAssociation 4dopts Res

olutionsICisney June 22 1908

Dear Sir According to a resolution I

passed by the board of directors ofthe H T GA at a meeting heldby them in Owensboro Ky on May28 1908 I am notifying you so thatyou can notify your board of con ¬

trol to meet with the differentboards of control of the several dis-tricts in Kentucky growing differ ¬

ent types of tobacco at BowlingGreeen Ky on the 9th day of July1908

The purpose of this meeting is toconsider ways and means for theconsummation of the H T G AWe deem this matter one of exceed-ing importance-

In the first place it is absolutelynecessary that the different districtswhich are under the several organi ¬

zations should at least recognize theimportance of the cooperation inpricing selling and limitation ofcrop growing These matters weconsider of vital importance to alltobacco growers it matters not ofwhat district they are associatedwith

We deem the further necessity ofcooperation among all tobaccogrowers for the fact that it is an undisputable question but what onetype of tgbacco can be substitutedfor another type to a certain extentif not wholly so it is true howeverthat it would be a difficult matterto substitute one type of tobaccowholly for another but at the sametime if you advance the price of theraw material of one type and depre ¬

ciate another type it will certainlybe substituted one for another

Tpgether with these facts as wesee the situation after a careful in ¬

vestigation we believe that the to ¬

bacco gropers throughout the Stateof Kentucky almost if not quitewon the fight tor their freedom aidthe right to price their product

We trust your board will considerthis meeting one of vital importanceand will be present and give us theaid of your wise counsel as to whether you want to extend and continuea HT G A If you fail to join Ua

in this meeting we will be forced todecide that you do not care to co ¬

operate with the rest of the districts 1

in KentuckyWishing you and your association

great success we remainFraternally

Trust to BlameThere is absolutely no excuse ex¬

cept cupidity for the soaring meatprices if the government figures arecorrect According to them thepercentage of increase in the num¬

ber of cattle raised in the country isconstantly greater than the popula ¬

tion The late falling off in the re-

ceipts¬

of cattle since the Octoberpanic has been more than balancedby decreased consumption If thestatistics are right there should bedropping instead of rising pricesThere is much reason to believe thatthe beef eaters are the victims ofthe Beef Trust The best thing possible to do under the circumstancesis to keep on as far as possible eatng grass and abstaining from meatuntil November In November there

3will be a chance to get back at theTrust by electing a Democratic CongressState Journal
