A Physician’s conscience…
“ I cannot reckon on much income from practice […] I
am too conscientious to prolong illness or make it
appear more dangerous than it is […]. It was agony for
me to walk always in darkness, when I had to heal the
sick, […]. Soon after my marriage, I renounced the
practice of medicine, that I may no longer incur the risk
of doing injury and I engaged exclusively in chemistry
and literary occupations”. (Castro, 1990).
A light in the darkness. A new medicine dawns….
Thanks to this physician, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann,
From the mid 1800’s this new medicine bagan to have remarkable results.
•After the retreat of Napolean's army. In 1813 there was an epidemic of Typhus in
Leipzig, Out of 180 patients only 2 were lost. This, at a time when the conventional
treatments were having a mortality rate of over 30%.
•When Cholera struck Europe in 1831 the mortality rate (under conventional treatment)
was between 40% and 80% . But for some doctors in London, Dublin, Russia, and Austria,
their patients succumbed at the rate of much less , with only 7% to 33% mortality rates.
By 1854 when Cholera hit the shores of the United States Europe once again, these same
physicians, reduced mortality rates to a mere 5.6%.
In the records of three years of Diphtheria in Broome County, NY from 1862 to
1864, there was a report of an 83.6% mortality rate among the conventional
doctors, but this new form of medicine was successful in 84% of cases with only
16% mortality rate.
During the Influenza Pandemic of 1918. Dr. T A McCann, from Dayton, Ohio,
reported that 24,000 cases of flu treated with conventional medicine had a
mortality rate of 28.2% while 26,000 cases of flu treated with this new form of
medicine had a mortality rate of 1.05
And most recently, in 2008, this same form of medicine successfully squelched the
often fatal tropic disease, Leptospirosis, in Cuba. When 2.3 million people at high
risk of infection were treated and 88% fewer infections were reported than
previous years. This treatment was “strongly associated with a drastic reduction of
disease incidence resulting in complete control of the epidemic.”

A Brief History of Homeopathy
The roots of this “new Medicine: were over 2000 years old.
Hippocrates wrote that there were two approaches to healing:
1. The use of contraries (Antipathic medicine)
2. Similars (Homeopathic medicine)
Examples of antipathic medicines:
• A laxative to ease constipation
• An anti-inflammatory to reduce inflammation
• An antacid is given to reduce stomach acidity
• An antihistamine to reduce an allergic reaction

Origins
This principle was first described in Hindu writings over 3000 years ago
Also mentioned by Hippocrates , Galen in the 2nd century and Paracelsus in16th century

SAMUEL HAHNEMANN & THE CHINA EXPERIMENT
Quinine = Peruvian bark / Cinchona or China
Hahnemann took doses of the powdered bark
He soon became sick with all the symptoms of Malaria
SAMUEL HAHNEMANN’S
DISCOVERY He stopped taking the bark and all
the symptoms disappeared.
He came to an astonishing conclusion.
The bark cured Malaria because it produced the same symptoms as the sickness.
HOMEOPATHY IS BORN
1796 Hahnemann publishes his
findings and Homeopathy is born
Like Cures Like = Similar Similibus
Curentur
The therapy is named Homoeopathy
HOMEO = SIMILAR
PATHOS = SUFFERING

Paracelsus
1493-1541 In the early 16th century a German doctor named Paracelsus, now known as the father of chemistry, strongly criticized the use of contraries and stressed his
belief that like cures like
The Law of Similars
This was one of those Eureka!! moments.
Hahnemann realised that if healthy people took
a particular substance and recorded their
symptoms, then somebody suffering from
similar symptoms could be cured using that
substance

Homeopathy uses similar suffering to restore health
(Similia Similibus Curentur or Like Cures Like)
Do you know what the remedies Allium–cepa, Apis and
Lachesis are prepared from?
Examples of the similia principle
Peeling an onion leads to sore, runny eyes, itchy nose and sneezing - Allium cepa used to treat hayfever and colds
The sting of a bee will produce a hard, swollen, raised and hot response on the skin. This is a terrific remedy for jelly fish stings, bee stings, or any rash of any origin with these symptoms.
Blood poisoning, hot flashes of menopause and certain kinds of paralysis respond very well to the remedy, Lachesis muta which is made from the poison of the rattlesnake.
Allium-cepa One of several common hay fever remedies, prepared from the red onion
A healthy person chopping an onion will often get a runny nose and streaming eyes.
Apis mellifica
Angry red swellings (whatever the cause) may be treated with Apis made from the sting of a bee.
Lachesis (snake)
Blood poisoning may be treated with Lachesis, or other remedies made from a snake’s venom
Examples
of the similia principle in medicine
Radiotherapy which is used to treat cancer also causes it
Amphetamines which produce hyperactivity, are used to treat hyperactive children
Immunisation

4. The Law of the Minimum Dose
How did Hahnemann overcome this obstacle?
What did he discover when he tested these dilute substances?
Back to the
drawing board
How did Hahnemann overcome this obstacle?
•He diluting the substance. He wanted to use the absolute minimum quantity of
substance to evoke the healing response.
•But they did not always work, but by chance, did he come upon the procedure that
would make the remedy potent enough to stimulate the healing response.
There are several stories about what
happened next….
The process of shaking and bashing somehow imprinted the energy of the
original substance into the liquid/dilutant so that it continued to have a
medicinal effect, but the toxic effects disappeared during the dilution process

Potentising a mother tincture
Remedies come in different potencies e.g. 6x, 12x, 6c, 12c, 30c, 200c, 1M,
10M etc.
Which are the most potent and why?
X= the process of dilution by a factor of 10
C= the process of dilution by a factor of 100
M= the process of dilution by a factor of 1000
‘M’ being more diluted, ‘M’ is more potent
….less is more.
The lower the dose, the stronger the
medicince.

Materia Medica
Repertory
BOOKS OF SYMPTOMS
He tested many substances and
wrote down each substances
symptoms in a book.
The books with all the symptoms
are known as : MATERIA
MEDICA
Materia Medica is a compilation of
Known symptoms produced by poisonings
Symptoms produced by provings
Symptoms relieved when remedy given for
other symptoms
Kent and his Repertory
• A great philosopher and writer of Materia
Medica
• But he is also known for his book of symptoms
called A Repertory
• Universally acknowledged to be the most
accessible of its time
• It is still in widespread use today
• Now computerized Repertories are available and
are of great help in choosing from around 3,000
remedies
J.T Kent 1849-1916
Repertorization
Repertory contains details of symptoms produced by
remedies listed under bodily systems e.g. mind, vertigo,
head, eye, vision, ear, hearing, nose, face etc.
e.g. heartburn after eating - Aesc. agar. Am.c. anac. Calc. Calc.
p. carl. Chin. Cocc.c. con. Croc. Graph. Iod. Lyc. Merc. Nat. mur.
Nit. Ac. Nux v. Sep. Sil.
The homeopathic interview will seek to
learn... Details of presenting complaint - aetiology, aggravations,
ameliorations, modalities
Aetiology : trauma, bereavement, never well since -pregnancy, menopause, glandular fever
Aggravations : conditions that make symptoms worse
Ameliorations : improve symptoms
Modalities : conditions qualifying a symptom
If the answers are different for each patient with the same “disease”
the remedy recommended will be different for each person.
From a physician hired to prove this
could not work… We discover the homeopathic direction of cure….
If you have not experienced a homeopathic remedy success, you may be asking the
question….
Does this really work??? Why not just find a remedy for a disease and get on with it? Why
all the personalization?
You aren’t the first and probably won’t be the last to question….
Constantine Hering 1800-1880
Hering’s observations on the direction
of cure • As a student in Leipzig, Hering was asked to
repudiate the claims made by Hahnemann put
forward in his Organon of Medicine
• Instead he became a fervent convert to Homeopathy
• His zealousness resulted in a poising from the
bushmaster snake whilst collecting venom for a
proving
• His wife recorded each poisoning symptom
meticulously for his next Materia Medica
• This was the remedy we now know as the
frequently prescribed Lachesis

A prolific writer and prover, however most
memorable is Hering’s direction of cure…
Symptoms move from above to below: head to toe (especially true
of superficial symptoms related to skin, muscles, and joints)
Symptoms move from within to without (from
deeper tissue/organs to the surface)
Old symptoms reappear in reverse order
Direction of cure
…and in reverse order of their
appearance

Eczema - hay fever - asthma and the direction of cure
Hering’s observations have been found to hold true in the majority of
cases, but the example given here, of eczema/hay fever/asthma, is one
that homeopaths see often
Time for a break…
8. Choose the remedy exercise…
Disease =Symptoms
or does it?
What is dis-ease?
The difference between Homeopathic
and Orthodox medicine Homeopathy (and other holistic approaches) sees symptom
manifestations as of a persons dis-ease
Orthodox medicine sees symptom
manifestations as the disease
Basis of Treatment
Homeopathy works with the body’s response to illness and remedies are prescribed according to the symptoms
one remedy can be used to treat several ailments
one ailment may need to be treated with different remedies in different patients
Highly individualized treatment.
Homeopaths refer to this as the Totality of the Symptoms, or Constitutional Homeopathy.
How to select a remedy… Based on the Disease
Based on the Person who
has the Disease.
If there is an epidemic , homeopaths are able to determine the totality of the symptoms –this is called genus epidemicus.
Usually we will have three remedies that are most effective.
Extremely helpful with the flu, whooping cough outbreaks, swamp fever in tropical climates such as in Cuba.
Totality of the Symptoms
Example: If three
asthmatics walk into a
homeopath’s office. The
odds that they each walk
out with a different
remedy recommendation is
very high.

The evidence for
Homoeopathy
Clinical studies on homeopathy

homeopathy. British Medical Journal 1991; 302 (Feb 9) :
316-323.
Linde K, Clausius N, Ramirez G, Melchart D,et al. Are
the clinical effects of homeopathy placebo effects? A
meta-analysis of placebo-controlled trials. The Lancet
1997; 350 (Sep 20): 834-843.
Two valuable reviews of homeopathic clinical studies were conducted by:
Their Conclusions….
Which I hope you will remember, the
next time someone says, “there is no
proof homeopathy works….”
Kleijnen’s conclusion
They found that of 107 trials with interpretable results, 77 were positive.
They then looked at a sub-group of the most rigorous trials and discovered that 15 out of 22 found homeopathy to be superior to placebo.
One of Kleijnen’s conclusions was that the evidence found : would probably be sufficient for establishing homeopathy as a regular treatment for certain conditions.
Linde’s conclusion
Linde’s conclusion is “The results of our meta-analysis
are not compatible with the hypothesis that the clinical
effects of homeopathy are completely due to placebo”.
A reading of the study shows a clearly positive result for
homeopathy
42% of the trials were clearly positive and a further 39%
showed a positive trend

Since 1938, homeopathic medicines have been classified as drugs within
the meaning of the federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FDCA).
Official homeopathic drugs are those that have monographs, which are
official listings of drug data, in the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the
United States (HPUS).
The HPUS is prepared by a nongovernmental organization, the Homeopathic
Pharmacopoeia Convention of the United States (HPCUS), which is
composed of scientists and clinicians trained in the medical specialty of
homeopathic medicine.
Current status of these medicines…

and codified in 21 U.S.C. §321(g)(1) (1938).
