DIVIDER PLATES DOUBLE GEL CAPACITY
Run as many as four 0.75-, 1.0- or 1.5-mm thick gels on SE 600Series units and two gels on the SE 400 Series at one time
under identical conditions.
How it works: Fit a divider plate between the glass plates thatmake up a single sandwich. Put spacers on each side of the
divider plate to form two gel cavities for pouring gels. This two-gel“club sandwich” fits into the same casting stand and seals perfectly.

Nucleic Acid Electrophoresis
Submarine Agarose Units
Because of their semi-rigid shape and the regular phosphate charge distribution along their length,DNA fragments separate by size in simple electrophoresis systems. Agarose is the preferred gel matrixused, which is easy to cast and has a good size separation range.
For separation of 100 bp to 20 kbp fragments, we recommend the Hoefer horizontal systems, HE 99XMAX SUBMARINE UNIT and HE 33 MINI SUBMARINE UNIT.
Nucleic acids can also be separated in vertical acrylamide gels, which have a much higher resolvingpower than agarose gels but a narrower size range of separation. For vertical separations of smallDNA fragments such as oligonucleotides up to 1000 bp, we recommend the HOEFER SE 300 miniVEor the SE 250 and SE 260 MIGHTY SMALL UNITS. For even further increased separation, werecommend the longer gels of the HOEFER SE 600 or SE 400 SERIES STANDARD VERTICALELECTROPHORESIS UNITS.

GElectrophoretic transfer of proteins is a much faster procedure than simple capillary or contact blotting methods.By directing electrical current through a transfer stack, blotting rates can be greatly accelerated.
Assays performed on transfer membranes are sensitive and require only small amounts of material. This is criticalwhen the species of interest is present in low concentrations or represents a minor fraction of the total sample. Moreover, since antibodies and other affinity reagents are often expensive, this can greatly reduce cost.
HOEFER TE SERIES TRANSFER TANKS and SEMI-DRY TRANSFER UNITS use electrophoresis to deliver excellenttransfers of proteins and nucleic acids from polyacrylamide or agarose gels onto nitrocellulose, PVDF or nylonmembranes.

Slant CorSlant CorrectionrectionSlant correction is a unique feature thatallows the user to turn the imageoptically ± 5 degrees. In this way thesample can be positioned so theanalysis software is better able toperform lane detection.
ImaImagge Pe PositioningositioningUnique image positioning using patented optics. Every user of animaging system has experienced the problem that the gel is never in theright place initially. With most commercially available systems the userhas to open the drawer or door to reposition the gel for the bestvisualization. The ULTima however is the only imaging system withpatented optics for image positioning without loss of optical resolution. This also ensures that lens adjustments are not required. The image ispositioned with the positioning keys without having to open the cabinetor adjust a fragile gel.
Broad Range of ApplicationsBroad Range of ApplicationsThe emission filter changer accommodates a maximum of 5 filters. The filters are selected from the drop-down list or from free definabletemplates. As standard the ULTima is equipped with an emission filterfor the detection of ethidium bromide and other fluorophores within inthe range from 560 to 640 nm (e.g. SYPRO™ Ruby). Filters for mostother fluorophores are available (for example SYBR™ Green II, Cy™3,Cy5, FITC, etc.).
GLPGLPDocumentation of results and the integrity of data becomes muchmore important for drug discovery and genetic engineering.GLP (Good Laboratory Practice) can only be achieved if all imageparameters and conditions are known and archived. ULTima is fullyequipped for GLP validation and verification.
Quantifiable DataQuantifiable DataThe demanding ULTima user can be certain of producing highquantifiable data. The flat fielding function performs a uniformcalibration for every individual image pixel.
Robot ReadyRobot ReadyThe UV 26 transilluminator unit is fully accessible. Samples forautomated 2D analyses can be loaded by robotic arm/system.
Superior Dynamic RangeSuperior Dynamic RangeSince every pixel within the image represents intensity data, it isimportant to achieve the highest possible conversion resolution. In most commercially available systems this is 8, 10 or 12 bit, representing 256, 1024 or 4096 grey levels. The ULTima 16si,ULTima 16si Plus and the ULTima Pro have real 16 bit dynamicranges which means 65536 real different grey levels. This offers muchmore precise quantification but also allows for shorter exposure timesfor chemiluminescent images. The exposure time is normally muchshorter than the exposure time needed for film with comparableimage quality.
TemplatesTemplatesTemplates allow the user to define the settings for image acquisition, including the excitation and emission filters. The parameters arestored per specific application.
User InterfaceUser InterfaceIn order to be able to acquire a high quality image, full control ofthe optics is indispensable. The Image Control screen is alwaysvisible at the bottom of the image, providing ultimate control overthe imaging process. The user has the choice of either setting theexposure time manually, or making use of the fully automaticcapabilities of the ULTima. Full lens control allows optimizationof a broad range of applications.

The ULTima Pro is designed withinnovative 2-stage Peltier cooling of theimage sensor. Rather than attempt to coolthe entire CCD chip to a very lowtemperature, the ULTima Pro cools only theareas of the chip where cooling is essentialto achieve low noise levels at longmeasurement times. This substantiallylengthens the lifetime of the CCD chip andthe camera system. As with ULTima 16siPlus, the ULTima Pro is equipped with anadditional computer-controlled focus andiris control.
