Highly efficient production of rumble strips
Rumble strip kit for cold milling machine W 50 DC / W 50 DC i
Quick and simple production of rumble strips
The rumble strip kit from Wirtgen is the ideal choice
for milling rumble strips into asphalt or concrete
road pavements in a highly efficient process. Vehicles
driving over the milled-out grooves that run along the hard
shoulder generate vibrations as well as clearly audible tyre
noises to alert inattentive or overtired vehicle drivers.
In this way, car or truck drivers are warned immediately
that they are drifting off their lane. The tried and tested
rumble strip kit enables durable and highly wear-
resistant rumble strips to be produced at high milling
speeds. The kit is ideally suited for use with the Wirtgen
W 50 DC / W 50 DC i cold milling machine.

Optimizing road pavements in a
cost-effective process
A W 50 DC / W 50 DC i is milling rumble strips into the hard shoulder of a road at high speed
The heavy, robust frame structure has been designed
for tough milling jobs and extended operation.
Exceptionally high milling speeds of up to 27 m/min
can be achieved with the rumble strip kit designed for
use with the W 50 DC / W 50 DC i.
The ancillary kit ensures precise maintenance of both
the milling depth and the specified intervals between
the rumble strips.
Economically efficient production is guaranteed by low
operating costs.
When driven over, the rumble strips generate vibrations and tyre noises
Choice of two tried and tested profile designs
Intelligent technology for increased safety
In the USA, mainly the so-called rumble strip profile
is used. The design of the rumble strip profile wheel
enables it to mill 10 mm to 20 mm deep grooves into the
pavement at precisely specified intervals.
The sinusoidal profile, on the other hand, is more com-
mon in Europe. Combined with a special milling drum
profile, the sinusoidal profile wheel creates a sinusoidal
milling contour both in and transverse to the direction of
travel. The rumble strips created in this process minimize
noise emissions while generating high levels of vibration
inside the vehicle at the same time.
The milling drum is driven via the mechanical drive system of the W 50 DC / W 50 DC i

Depending upon requirements, the rumble strip kit can
be used to produce a rumble strip or sinusoidal profile.
Wirtgen additionally offers a non-profiled wheel for the
quick and easy removal of road markings.
Rumble strips can be produced at speeds of up to
27 m/min – depending on the material to be removed,
job site conditions and rumble strip contour.
The operator can work at ease as the operator’s
platform is completely isolated from the up-and-down
movements of the profile wheel.
Sinusoidal profile (Europe)
The hexagonal sinusoidal profile wheel produces an oval, sinusoidal milling contour in the direction of travel
Eminently suitable for use in residential areas: the sinusoidal profile reduces noise emissions
but increases vibration levels
Specially arranged cutting tools create an oval, sinusoidal milling contour transverse to the direction of travel
Ease of operation for perfect milling results
Optional control unit for increased operator comfort
The rumble strip kit has been designed with ease
of operation, milling precision and high daily perfor-
mance in mind. These features are enhanced even further
by the optional control unit. It is arranged within easy reach
and in the operator’s immediate field of view and can be
used to adjust different milling parameters and display
travel speed, distance travelled and similar readouts.
The milling drum can easily be switched from the left to
the right machine side. Mounting the rumble strip kit to be
used is just as easy. Nine weight slabs weighing 550 kg
altogether can be added separately as required. In addi-
tion, the kit has been designed so as to allow milling right
up close to obstacles such as manhole covers.
Intelligent concept
The milling drum can be mounted on the left or right side of the machine
The additional machine control system simplifies the work process
The direction of travel is corrected via bearing rod
and front mirror to ensure best working results
