Message From the PresidentIn previous annual reports, I began my letter by saying the past year had been one of expansion, significant changes, and great accomplishments. This sentiment also rings true when reflecting on this fiscal year, which ended June 30, 2014. In addition to this, HGH also faced considerable challenges and some difficult hurdles. I am proud to say that with the leadership of our Board, an unbelievable staff, and you, we confronted these obstacles head on and turned them into opportunities for the ben-efit of our growth. We still have work ahead of us, but I have no doubt, we will continue to make great strides in our programs and services in effort to fulfill our mission...”to improve the lives of those we serve”.

Focusing on the positive, HGH accomplished much this past year thanks to you! A few of our highlights include:

• Our three signature events; the 4th Annual Randy Jones 5K for Independence, our 40th Annual Gala, and the 31st Annual Golf Classic netted over $225,000. Due to the inadequate rates we are paid by the state, we must rely on community support to implement the quality services and programs HGH has been providing since 1961.

• Addressed the need for programs for a growing number of individuals in Respite, Early Childhood, Adult Family Home and Community Living Programs.

• Received $25,000 in grants to fund the opening of a sensory room and developmental therapy center in Spring Valley.

• Continued to upgrade and make significant improvements to our 31 community based homes. We are grateful to our many donors and supporters, for without them, these projects would not have been possible. A few distinguishable partners include The City of El Cajon and the City of Santee who funded over $40,000 in home improvements.

• Held the grand opening of our Integrated Therapy Clinic in El Centro. With the generous donation we received from The Foundation for Developmental Disabilities, we are excited to be able to meet the needs of individuals in Imperial County that have been underserved for many years.

• In January, we hosted our entire staff of supervisors and managers for training with Dr. Tom Pomeranz, who spent the day with us to discuss Empowering People to Have a Meaningful Life. Tom is a nationally recognized authority, trainer, clinician, and consultant in the field of services for people with disabilities.

• I was honored to have been selected to join the San Diego Regional Center Board of Directors as the Vendor Advisory Board representative.

In closing, I want to again assure you that I am dedicated to accountability and efficiency. Every donor dollar and every penny that comes into HGH is spent wisely, helping to create the quality of life that we all strive for.

If you have any questions or would like to learn more about HGH, my door is always open.

With warmest regards,

President & CEO

Alison

Age 36

When Alison was 32 years old, she decided that it was time to make the leap from living with her parents to living independently in the community. While Alison was excited, her mother was very nervous. With help from our Community Living Program, Alison was able to secure an apartment that fit within her price range. She currently receives weekly support from her counselors with budgeting, cooking, and laundry. Proud of herself for reaching her goal, Alison says that living independently is one of the biggest accomplishments of her life!

HGH honors and supports individuals who want to live independently.

What we do:

HGH provides a continuum of services for all ages: early childhood development – serving infants and toddlers; residential services for children, adolescents and adults; in-home respite serving all ages; a community living program; counseling and family support services; and a variety of quality of life programs in San Diego and Imperial County for 47 years.

We believe that individuals thrive when they can direct their own lives in a setting that offers a more fulfilling lifestyle, provides individualized attention, increases opportunities for self-sufficiency, and encourages greater community integration and access. These are the guiding principles behind everything we do at HGH.

Who we are:

We are partners, facilitators, community members, and teachers for the individuals and families we serve.

Benny

Age 3

Since Benny was two years old he has been working on his communication skills with an early childhood educator at HGH. She has helped him use his words to express himself, which makes it easier to talk to his mommy, daddy, and grandma.

Thomas the Tank Engine, toy cars, making people laugh, and listening to music are all things that make Benny a happy boy. He is really good at climbing on the furniture at home, and he loves to watch the fish swim around in his fish tank. We are excited to see Benny excel in his speech and know he is headed towards great things!

Family-centered, relationship-based,

culturally-responsive and tailored to each child.

Liam

Age 12

Liam moved to HGH in July 2012. He was struggling with how to effectively communicate his needs and wants. He lives with other children his age who have developmental disabilities and similar struggles. Through teamwork, which includes Liam, his parents, his house staff, school, and doctors, Liam is blossoming! He is learning to communicate successfully and make good choices. He is working on a variety of life skills which will increase his independence as he grows into adulthood. He enjoys Legos, books, computers, art, swimming, camping with his family, Disneyland and Legoland, and researching chickens for his backyard. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for Liam!

Achieving independence through guidance and training, while promoting self-advocacy and family inclusion.

Bruce

Age 51

After 10 years living in a group home setting with five other adults with developmental disabilities, Bruce has made a very successful transition to living by himself with a family. Bruce was the perfect candidate for the Adult Family Program at HGH. He enjoys his increased level of independence and having his own space. He is fully integrated into family life, receives the support he needs, and is involved in the everyday happenings and joys of a home.

Bruce is unique. He loves playing piano and can play any piece of music after hearing it only once. His favorite activities are performing for groups of people at community events, going to Frye’s, and visiting Guitar Center where he is able to play on some beautiful pianos. Bruce has amazing gifts that he shares with us, his community, and his new family!

Honoring choice, connecting individuals, and supporting family life.

Lowell

Age 83

Lowell moved into an HGH residential group home seven years ago and he is happy and thriving here! His favorite things are horses, dogs, and celebrating his birthday. He just celebrated his 83rd birthday with all his friends and family.

Lowell attends a daily program where he participates in art, horticulture, computers, and swimming. After returning from this program, he loves taking trips to the Dollar Store where he searches for treasures. Lowell takes pride in his home and is a huge help in keeping it clean. Lowell has such a contagious smile!

HGH is more than just a place to live; it’s a place to thrive.

Faith

Age 5

Faith’s family receives respite care. Caring for a loved one with developmental disabilities like Faith can be a daily challenge. Faith is a twin but she also has five older brothers and sisters. Respite care has proven to be very helpful to the family.

Faith loves the respite worker from HGH. She comes to her house and spends time with her so her mom can go to the grocery store, attend her siblings’ sporting events, or enjoy a date with her dad. They have a lot of fun together! Her favorite things to do with her respite worker are playing games, listening to music, coloring, singing, reading books, and swimming in the pool. Faith started kindergarten this fall with her twin sister and began a new soccer season with her team.

HGH empowers families through a broad range of support services.

Our Supporters

Bob and Dottie Carne wish to thank Home of Guiding Hands for providing 25 years of excellent care for their daughter, Terri, while residing at one of HGH’s 31 homes. “We hope that our gift of $50,000 will be used to embellish the lives of the HGH clients now and in the future.”

Bob and Dottie have been supporting HGH for over 25 years. Their daughter, Terri, initially resided at the Lakeside Campus, house #10, then made the transition off campus to homes in the community. Jack Close became her new home for many years. Terri received care from HGH staff for 25 years before moving, once again, to a sub-acute facility where she received a higher level of nursing care. This doesn’t stop Terri from visiting with her longtime friends. Bob and Dottie generously host a holiday party for their daughter and her close friends from Jack Close every year.

The Carnes have generously been contributing to our mission in a variety of ways. To mention a few, they have donated accommodations at their Kauai condo every year to the gala for the silent auction. Dottie served on the charitable arm of HGH, The Woman’s Guild, from its inception. Bob volunteered his time with the Foundation Board of Directors, the Audit Committee, and currently serves on the Board of Governors. The Carnes are Heritage Society members and have committed a portion of their estate to HGH. They were acknowledged as the 2007 Gala Honorees.

We received a magnanimous donation from the Carnes of $50,000. They asked that the funds be used for the enrichment of the lives of our clients now and in the future. Their hope is that this gift inspires their seven children, nine grandchildren, three great grandchildren, friends, and other community members to bestow their generosity to nonprofits such as HGH. They place great value in volunteering, and encourage others to do just that, if a monetary commitment isn’t feasible.

HGH relies upon our community members like the Carnes to supplement the minimal reimbursement we receive from the State of California. We are determined to maximize the independence, productivity, and quality of life for individuals with developmental disabilities.

Thank you Bob and Dottie Carne, for your commitment to improving the lives of those we serve!

2014 Volunteer of the Year

Lora Heramb was destined to be part of the HGH family!

Roy Heramb, Lora’s father-in-law, was a founding father of HGH. Roy helped build the campus and served on the HGH Board of Directors for many years. Doris Heramb, Lora’s mother-in-law, has also been affiliated with Home of Guiding Hands since its inception. In the 1960’s, Doris helped launched the HGH Women’s Guild and spent countless hours putting on fundraising events for HGH.

Following in the footsteps of Roy and Doris was the 2nd generation of Herambs. Lora married Roy and Doris’ son, Brent. Like a true Heramb, Lora is passionate about the services and programs HGH provides to individuals with developmental disabilities. She has served in various capacities as President of the Women’s Guild, Chairman of the Guild’s Fashion Show, chaired several HGH Galas, and has volunteered on a myriad of other committees.

Without hesitation, Lora is always willing to assist the Development Department with administrative tasks like mailings and goody bag stuffing. She’s even gone so far as to complete a large mailing during her family vacations; though we aren’t sure her family is thrilled with this because they usually get dragged into helping!

The 40th Annual Gala, held this past June, started off with a few obstacles and challenges. Lora didn’t miss a beat and stepped right up to take on the position as Committee Chair. She was an inspiration from the get-go. She enrolled her friends to become members on the committee and even convinced Lynne Doyle to co-chair the event with her! She conducted the meetings in true leadership fashion, making sure everyone’s ideas were heard and that all members contributed to the overall success of the event. Lora’s creative mind and attention to detail lead the committee to record-breaking numbers this year. We are truly thankful and honored to have had the opportunity to work so closely with Lora this past year. Please join us in recognizing Lora Heramb as HGH’s 2014 Volunteer of the Year.
