Eric Klineberg is an eminent sociologist and an author who offers a blueprint for re-
building our fractured society. Recognizing that we are living in a time of deep divi-
sions, in his recent book, Palaces for the People, Mr. Klineberg suggests a way for-
ward. “He believes that the future of democratic societies rests not simply on shared
values but on shared spaces… in which crucial… connections are formed. These are
places where people gather and linger, making friends across group lines and strength-
ening the entire community. He believes social infrastructure is helping to solve some
of our most pressing challenges: isolation, crime, education, addiction, political polari-
zation, and even climate change.”
Our programs this past year not only provided information, education, and entertain-
ment to a varied group of people, they were specific to many of the topics Klineberg
lists as challenges.
Libraries are great equalizers. They are places where people with different back-
grounds, passions, and interests can come together and find a common purpose. They
are places where those with means and those with lesser incomes come together to
enjoy a shared interest. Our offerings in the past year were as varied as the people who
took part in them and we take great pride in providing so much for so many.
We are fortunate to live in a community where the divides might not seem prevalent or
life-threatening, yet we all recognize the importance of providing a safe haven –
whether for the lonely senior citizen, for children after school, for moms seeking par-
enting connections, or a troubled youth not wanting to be judged.
At the Museum our volunteers and residents bond over shared history, documenting
memories and working diligently to preserve the stories of the past for future genera-
tions. Recalling the strengths of our town ancestors help us better recognize our op-
portunities in the present. Stories of Washington’s forefathers draw us into another
time and highlight the philanthropists who formed our institution – the men and wom-
en whose wisdom and financial largess borne the
Gunn Memorial Library and eventual Historical
Museum.
Carnegie wrote that he decided “there was no use to
which money could be applied so productive of
good… as the founding of a public library in a com-
munity.”
Your interest in the Library and the Museum, your
financial contributions, your hands-on volunteer
work, and your advocacy to the community are very
much appreciated. Your gifts of time, treasure, and
talent bring us a wealth of support. Thank you!

THE WYKEHAM LEGACY SOCIETY:
Preserving the Past, Assuring the Future
Many of our patrons and friends support the Library through our Annual Appeal and other
fundraising events. Through gifts by will, transfer, or beneficiary designation under life
insurance policies and retirement plan assets, as well as charitable trusts, individuals and
families may continue their legacy of support.
Please help Gunn Memorial plan for the future by telling us if you have included us in your
plans, or by requesting information for planning a bequest. Our brochure, Preserving the Past,
Assuring the Future, is available at the Library and outlines ways a legacy may be created for
future generations.
Please contact Executive Director Jean Chapin at 860-868-7586 or [email protected]
if we can provide further information.
Thank you for your generosity. We appreciate every gift & regret any errors in listings.
Please inform us of corrections or omissions.
FIELD COMMUNITY ROOM 2019
I came to know Jack when he was a trustee at Wykeham
Rise and the institution was closing its doors. The school’s
charter provided that should the facility disband, remaining
assets be given to a local non-profit. Wykeham trustees
decided that Gunn Memorial Library be the recipient of
$500,000, as a central public institution who could possibly
impact a large portion of the community.
Jack joined the Library Board of Trustees in 1991, became
active in the Building campaign, overseeing the Library
expansion and Museum renovation. He was thorough, ded-
icated, efficient, and practical. He oversaw the financial
aspects and was hands-on in the complete building process. And he was always fiscally
conservative. When I asked that the elevator go down another level so we could access the
floor beneath the children’s library, he questioned the expense. Then I asked for windows,
too! I envisioned the basement, with handicap access and large windows, as a possible
space for growth. It was pragmatic to plan for the future. Jack was receptive when he
found an idea or presentation to be well thought out and have merit, and so he supported
and championed my request.
Our working relationship continued in that same vein, Jack mentoring me as the Library
grew from a two story 2,500 square feet building into the 5 story 10,000 square foot Library
we enjoy today.
Jack and his wife Eileen were getting on in years when he came to me and asked if I still
wanted to do that “project” I pitched as a possibility so long ago. He offered not only his
support, but his financial backing. We started the process of completing the spectacular
Field Community Room with Jack’s magnanimous donation of $260,000.
Jack came to me with the offer of an additional monetary gift in the form of a challenge.
He wanted the community at large to have a sense of ownership in this new space he had
gifted to the town. Jack wanted others to commit
funds to support this room’s use. Jack passed away
before we could put his challenge grant into place.
In honor of Jack’s wishes, and as a suitable acknowl-
edgement of his generosity, we are offering an oppor-
tunity for people to become ‘part’ of this project. Do-
nors contributing to our Annual Appeal this year will
be listed on the Field Community Room wall.
I encourage you to join Jack, by showing your support,
and have your name showcased in this new space.

The Museum focused on creating the long-term Washington history exhibit and new
programming was put on pause. The Museum sponsored 4 programs on and off-site,
including Washington History Club, History Bites Lecture, New Year's Tea Party and
Cookie Contest and the annual Washington Cemetery Tour, successfully flourishing
with 385 attendees.
The museum closed to the public in September and the small display in the entrance
room was taken down to prepare for construction. Total visitors to programs and Mu-
seum volunteers working on-site totaled 1,550.
The Adult Library sponsored and collaborated on 71 programs, including four pro-
grams conducting multiple week sessions, with a total attendance of over 3,348. Pro-
grams included the extremely popular Monday Matinee Film Series, Exhibition on
Screen series, two literature series and various lectures and discussion, including six
author talks and book signings.
44,266 people visited the library, averaging 851 people per week.
The Library’s collection continues to be steady at nearly 50,000 (actual number is
47,682) items, with an additional 10,888 items available through the Overdrive collec-
tion of downloadable e-books and audio books. Also available to our patrons through
the rbDigital link at the CT State website (formerly IConn) there is approximately
3,913 downloadable e-book and audio titles. This brings our total available materials
collection to 62,209.
The Museum cataloged 130 artifacts, updated 1,564 collection records and acces-
sioned 94 new items, bringing the total number of artifact records in Past Perfect to
11,754. A regular core group of 16 volunteers works diligently to keep up with col-
lection documentation and related activities in addition to volunteers who worked on
special events.
The Library circulated 39,657 items. 62% were print items, including downloadable
books, with audio books & digital downloads, music and movies, at 38% of the total.
Circulation is 62% adult, 34% children and 4% teen.
GML loaned 2,857 items to other libraries and borrowed 1,431 items from other li-
braries. Out-of-town patrons from
neighboring communities came
into Gunn and borrowed 11,418
directly from our shelves.
One-on-one technology assis-
tance continued to be successful.
More than 75 patrons were assist-
ed in use of personal devices,
emails and general technology
navigation.
One of the most requested topics
ITEMS OF NOTE
is instruction for the Libby App, a digital library service which provides patrons with
Overdrive, a user friendly format for digital materials, with access to over 10,500 ti-
tles for e-book and audio download to digital devices. A printed instructional bro-
chure, which we continually replace due to demand, is available at the Circulation
Desk to assist patrons.
The 4th and 5th grade “After-School Gaming” group remained consistent with approxi-
mately 18 kids attending each session for a six week period in the fall and spring.
Other programs for older kids included the “Teen Tech Time” program where local
students volunteered to assist adult patrons with technology information such as how
to use their I-phones, navigating their email or laptop computers. The Junior Library
hosted 135 programs with a total attendance of 4,085.
59 prizes were donated by local businesses & individuals to the children’s Summer
Reading Program during which time 191 children logged in nearly 5,000 hours of
reading!
The Library hosted 13 community groups, including, the Washington Democratic
Town Committee, the Washington Republican Town Committee, the Washington
Friends of Music, the Washington Environmental Council, Shakespeare in the Park,
Wykeham Rise alumnae and various local schools to provide space for tutoring, lec-
tures, class instruction, meeting space, workshops and receptions. Many of these or-
ganizations utilized our facilities for multiple events.
77 people registered as Friends of the Museum and the semi-annual Washington
Chronicles continues to be mailed as a benefit. Members joining at the $100 level and
above receive the Museum's annual calendar.
Over 1,151 people registered to use computers in the adult library; a 7.3% increase
from last year. Additionally, patrons brought their own digital devices to use our
wireless Internet service. Patrons logged in remotely to electronic resources and data-
bases available through our website, such as Wowbrary with 3,043 hits, Scholastic
