Step 1

• ProvideacopyoftheSampleHealthyEatingGuidelinestoallofthegroup’sparents,carersandstaff.

Step 2• Involvestaff,parentsandcarersinthedevelopmentofthegroup’sguidelinestohelp

themmakeiteasiertoputintopractice.• Holdadiscussionwithparents,carersandstaffaboutcurrentpractices-thiscouldbe

doneduringmorningtea.• Identifyanyneworalternativepointstoincludeinyourguidelines,considerculturally

appropriatefoodsandallergieswhereappropriate.

Step 3• Reviewcommentsandupdateguidelinesaccordingtoanydiscussionsanddecisions

made.

Guidelinesmaybedevelopedmoreinformallyusingthesamplepolicyasaguidefordiscussionandtheparents/carersagreeinginprinciple.

Step 4 • Distributetheguidelinestostaff,parentsandcarers• Communicatetheexpectationsregardingthefoodanddrinksthatareencouraged

andthosethatarediscouragedfrombeingbroughttothegroupsessionorservicetoparents/carersinasupportiveandinclusivemanner.

• Includetheguidelineinyourgroupsessionorserviceorientation/registrationpack(orequivalent)fornewfamiliesusingyourservice.

• Includetheguidelineinyoursigninareaordisplaywhereitisaccessibletoallstaffandfamilies

Step 5• Reviewfoodandnutritionpracticesevery12monthsorasnecessarytoensuretheyare

consistentwithyourserviceguidelines• Updatetheguidelinesanddiscusswithparents/carersasrequired.

These steps for developing Healthy Eating Guidelines are suitable for a group session or service provided for a couple of hours with parents/carers and children attending together, for example, playgroups.
