The Flögl family from Zell opens the
“Hotel am See” in 1878. Back then,
it is a small building. However, the
family is forced to file for bankruptcy
just one year later. In 1896, succes-
sors Carl and Therese Böhm breathe
new life into the hotel. Extensive
construction measures turn the ho-
tel into a magnificent promoterist
building and it is given the name
“Grandhotel am See”.
During the Second World War, the
building is used as a billet for the
US occupying power. Due to sev-
eral major blazes, it loses all sense
of comfort. In 1955, Karl Gram-
shammer purchases the ramshack-
le building for the symbolic sum of
one Austrian Schilling, and rebuilds
it in the style of the time. The hotel
is the setting for several films and
the “Grand” regains its popularity.
In 1965, however, the walls start to
crumble. A storm tide causes further
substantial damage.

Depending on the season, around
120 members of staff are employed
at the GRAND HOTEL. Chef Bernd
Bereuter has been an important
member of staff for 25 years now.
The “Wunderbar” was located on
the sixth floor of the Imperial wing
between 1986 and 2000. Instead
of the bar, two luxury suites with a
fantastic view are now planned.

With the installation of electric
light, modern luxury reigns in the
“Grandhotel am See”. During the
summer, 25,000 overnight stays are
recorded. In 1918, after the break it
was forced to take during the First
World War, the hotel is sold to Karl
Pischkittl and experiences a brief
upswing during the 1930s.

In 1984, the hotel is owned by a
Swedish timeshare company. First
of all it is completely demolished
and then rebuilt as a suite hotel,
maintaining its original promoterist
architecture. In 1995, the timeshare
company opens composition pro-
ceedings. The Holleis family buys
the Grand Hotel and the neigh-
bouring Clima Hotel, combing the
two to make the GRAND HOTEL
ZELL AM SEE.

Empress Elisabeth – known as
“Sisi” – visited Zell am See and
the Schmittenhöhe on 9 August
1885. Carl Haschke built the
Elisabethkapelle in memory of her
between 1904 and 1905.
Zell am See had a population of
around 1,000 and 3,000 hotel beds
between 1928 and 1930.
In 2008, an exclusive spa area is built
on the fourth and fifth storeys of
the wellness wing. The GRANDSPA
combines tradition with the zeit-
geist, and its magnificent panorama
views are breath-taking. The imperi-
al Kaisersaal restaurant is extended
on a large scale in 2014-2015, and
the lake bar is erected. A new un-
derground garage comprising 84
parking spaces is also built. A new
era is rung in at the start of 2016:
the Casino Austria opens its doors in
the wellness wing of the hotel.
In 1998, the hotel – with the sup-
port of the new Imperial Café-Bar –
is once again given a new lease of
life in the form of the good spirit of
old Austrian hotel culture. In 2003,
Dr Holleis gets the famous Austrian
artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser
to build the Österreichbrunnen in
the hotel garden.

Alpinewell-being.
Crystal-clearmountain air.
A deep breath of clear mountain air between the blue sky, lush
green meadows and the earthy fragrance of the forests. The spe-
cial air which reigns amongst the impressive mountain backdrop
is not only a relief for most summiteers – it is proven to have a
positive influence on our health. The air on the mountain acts as a
tonic for the circulation and protects against heart disease. Why is
that? A holiday at high altitudes is the equivalent of a workout for
the heart. The low oxygen content of the air means that the heart
has to pump more blood through the body in order to provide it
with sufficient oxygen. The mountain air also has a positive effect
on those suffering from allergies. For all those wishing to lose a
couple of pounds: studies have proven that the mountain air sup-
presses the appetite. Take a deep breath and enjoy the healthy
effect of the mountain air!

The majestic mountains in Zell am See are a charm-
ing destination for all discerning alpinists. Countless
climbing routes and hiking paths take you through
the mountains and its multifaceted nature. Summer
cable cars make it easier to go on your alpine journey
of discovery. The adventurous can try their hand on a
downhill bike and fly across the trails downwards into
the valley. The highest e-motocross park in Austria
presents a special action highlight.
The adventure hiking path “Schmidolin’s Baptism of
Fire” is a very special hotspot for families. The idea is to
answer difficult questions, to pass daring tests of cour-
age and to master various tasks. Particularly adventurous
children try out “Schmidolin’s Feuerstuhl”, which is an
e-motocross trail for the little ones. Kids between the
ages of 6 and 14 whizz around safe roads on electric
bikes. Adults can also take a spin at an altitude of 1,400
metres above sea level – quite void of noise and envi-
ronmentally unfriendly emissions.
