THE RESPONSIBLE LEADERLeaders must remember that they are the custodians of society’s most powerful institutions.

They must therefore hold themselves to a higher standard.

Leadership is about change, hope and the future. Display a commitment to learning and developing yourself.

If you aren’t educated, you can’t help the uneducated; if you are sick, you can’t minister to the sick; if you are poor, you can’t help the poor.

Develop the ability to put personal performance into perspective. Over your long career, you will experience both success and failure. Humility in success and courage in failure are hallmarks of a good leader.

Be ready to invest in the development of other people. Be unstinting in helping your colleagues realize their full potential.

Realize the importance of loyalty to organization, profession, community, society and, above all, family. Most of our achievements would be impossible without our families’ support.

Assume responsibility for outcomes as well as for the processes and people you work with. How you achieve these results will shape the kind of person you become.

Balance achievement with compassion and learning with understanding.

Be conscious of the part you play. Be concerned about the problems of the poor and the disabled, accept human weaknesses, laugh at yourself – and avoid the temptation to play God.

Leadership is about self-awareness, recognizing your failings; and developing modesty, humility and humanity.

Dear Students, Parents and Alumni,

Welcome to the 2012 European University Barcelona Commencement Ceremony. First of all, I would like to thank you parents for your support of the students; students for your hard work; and all of you for your passion and dedication.

The world today is changing at a rapid pace. Neither I nor those of you who are graduating today can predict with total certainty what the world will look like in 12 months, much less in five years. I got my degree in 1973. Most of you parents will remember that as the year of the largest Oil Crisis in history. The future seemed especially uncertain and many mornings, we couldn’t use our cars because the gas to run them was simply too expensive. But here we are today – most of us car owners – celebrating this joyous occasion, demonstrating that the challenges that in their moment seemed so daunting eventually fade into distant memories.

It goes without saying that although all events – good and bad– inevitably pass, success always comes to those people who are prepared and ready for anything. For this I would like to advise you to always follow the three Ds: 1. Make the Difference; it is as much about being different as it is about making a difference in the world. 2. Be Diverse; do not put blinders on and shut out everything else. It is most important to know a little about everything – one never knows when those accordion lessons may come in handy. 3. Distinguish yourself; as the world grows it also shrinks, clients want special attention from a knowledgeable expert so specialize and find your niche.

Keep this advice in mind and you will possess the basic tools to prosper in this world.

Please stay in touch with us.

Sincerely,

Dr. Dirk CraenPresident

DISTINGUISHED GUESTSMr. Jochum HaakmaGlobal Director of Business Development, TMF Group BV“Doctor Honoris Causa” “Leadership Award”

Mr. Michel MiserezArea Vice President, Marriott Hotel Group, Western Europe

Mr. Jochum Haakma is a lawyer, former career diplomat; and an expert in the field of Trade and Investment Promotion. In 1995, he followed a postdoctoral course at Harvard Business School. From 1997 to 2006 he served as Consul-General in Hong Kong/Macao and Shanghai. In 2006, he was appointed Managing Director of The Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency under the Ministry of Economic Affairs in The Netherlands. He moved to the private sector in 2007 and was appointed Global Director of Business Development of the TMF Group BV in Amsterdam, where he is currently responsible for the business development and branding of TMF worldwide (with more than 120 wholly owned offices in over 75 countries and with headquarters in Amsterdam) Mr. Haakma is also an advisory board member of the Cathay Pacific China Trade Award and numerous institutions and organizations with a Far East link. Mr. Michel Miserez, Area Vice President for the Marriott Hotel Group, Western Europe exudes the confidence, calm and security that only someone who has been in the same company for over two decades can possess. He began working with Marriott after completing his MBA at EU in 1988. The position was fairly entry level and he knew that in order to excel he would need to learn the hotel industry from the ground up. He recalls, “They told me, ‘you don’t have a hotel degree and don’t have much experience so why don’t you get dirty and start in night audit?’” After nine months with Marriott, Mr. Miserez declined a career opportunity with Westin Hotels, convinced that the Marriott culture would serve him better in the long run. His decision paid off and it wasn’t long before he began moving from place to place with the company. He held positions in Amsterdam, Budapest, Paris and Hong Kong. In 2006, he became the Vice President of Finance for Continental Europe in Frankfurt and in May of this year left finance for a position as Area Vice President for Western Europe. His advice to students: “Get as much practical experience as early as possible within actual companies, in any area of accounting and finance and working with the basics. Then be the best in what you do.”

The sole mission of Make-a-Wish® Spain is to grant wishes to children suffering from life-threatening illnesses between the ages of three and 18. By granting these wishes, the children and their families are given a temporary escape from the most difficult time of their lives. By experiencing laughter, joy and excitement for a few days or even a few hours gives many the strength to carry on and keep fighting.

Ms. Sonia Valero UreñaCEO, Make-a-Wish® Spain “Social Responsibility Award”

A var ied backg round in business administration, marketing and management has prepared Ms. Valero Ureña for her current position as CEO of Make-a-Wish® Spain, where she is in charge of management and governance, the growth and organizational effectiveness, the human resources and the fundraising and works in close collaboration with the president and the board of the Foundation.

Have you ever made a WISH come true?

Most of us are lucky and have the opportunity to transform our wishes into reality. However, some children will never have this possibility. They are children who suffer from serious illnesses, undergo lengthy hospital treatment and fight every day for their lives. In Spain every year more than 900 children are diagnosed with an oncological disease and many others with other serious illnesses.

FundaciónFundación Ilusiones®/Make-A-Wish® Spain was founded in 1999 to help these children have their wishes come true.

TheThe work that we do at the Foundation, the involvement of the child and family and the personal effort that they themselves bring to make their wishes happen, produce amazing results. Beyond the special moments that remain forever in their memories, it is really true that a positive reaction can be seen in their systems to respond to the disease. Today seven out of ten children beneficiaries of the Foundation are derived from their doctors.

FromFrom 2009, Fundación Ilusiones/Make-A-Wish Spain is part of the international Make-A-Wish® Foundation, sharing mission and values with 100 affiliate offices, distributed in 48 countries around the world.

Multi-Functional Like You !

The first WENGER multi-functional Swiss Army Knife featured a sharp blade, screwdri-ver, reamer and can opener. It became an essential tool for soldiers whose survival depended equally on food and a working rifle. To this day, this same knife is the inspiration behind WENGER’s mission to create multi-functional equipment for the outdoor enthusiast.
