Gibson Dental Designs is excited to let you know about the new
technology in our lab. Since the beginning of August we
have been using the 3Shape Scanner D710 and it is going great!
The D710 3Shape scanner in todays market has the most extensive range of dental scans. This scanner is optimized for 3D
s c a n n i n g o f b o t h impression and gypsum models and they surpass all performance norms for scan speed, precision and detail level. It’s also
capable of multi-die scanning. The 2 cameras with reduced angle enable impressions, deep inlays and full
undercuts to be scanned effectively. The 3-axis motion system allows the dental object to be tilted, rotated and translated facilitating scanning from any view point enabling scanning of more than 350 degrees of a sphere. The scan parameters are automatically adjusted to the objects material for accurate color capture.
For now we are only using this system for zirconia cases. In the future we hope to mate it to an open architect printer that will allow us to print wax copings and even zirconia copings in the green state.
We have trained technicians in our lab that know how to use this system to its fullest capacity. Since this system is new to us we are tracking the cases that are made from the D710 scanner and as with the COS
follow up that is on page 2 we will let you know how things are going with the 3Shape scanner in our next newsletter in the Winter 2011 edition.
If you would like more information on the 3Shape scanner please contact Wayne Burrell at Extension 239.
We are now using the 3Shape scanner!

Lava COS: Chairside Oral Scanner Update
The Chairside Oral Scanner, or COS for short, that we told
you about in an earlier newsletter has really began to
pay off.
Our doctors and technicians are very excited about how well it makes their individual work mesh together to produce a great restoration. As of date we’ve had no remakes on cases done using the COS for impression taking. The accuracy of the margins and the integrity of the margins created using the scanned models have been excellent.
As with every product there are some drawbacks we’ve found, but they are minimal. The doctor will find that it takes a little longer to take an impression using the COS, than with convent ional impress ion materials and techniques. Most
Doctors who have given the COS a good time trial believe the extra time is worth the results.
The lab technician will discover that because of the way a model for a COS impression is manufactured there is the possibility of the die having slight movement to either the mesial or distal. To correct this simply add a solid model and make sure the contacts fit the solid model. We actually do this already with every case, no matter how the impression is taken or the model is manufactured.
We recommend the COS because of what we’ve already discussed, but also because it’s format is considered as open architecture. This allows it to be mated to other open architecture systems, such as printers. If you would like more information on the Lava COS and to take a look at it in your office setting contact 3M ESPE, 800.634.2249, Ext. 1, or go to their website at 3m.com.

Here in Gainesville, Georgia the leaves are just starting to turn their beautiful fall colors and decorate our yards. It’s time for cool weather, backyard
cookouts, tailgating and football. It’s also time for fall allergies and sinus congestion as well. I don’t know about you but fall is one of my favorite times
of year, if I could just get by the allergy part! As a sinus and fall allergy sufferer here are a few ideas that have been helpful to me over the years.
1. Wear a dust mask outdoors when cutting grass, raking leaves, or any activity that may create dust or stir up leaf mole spores.
2. Try using a nasal irrigation (ex. saline solution) after working or playing outdoors, especially in the spring or fall when the pollen tends to be higher.
3. Drink more water. You can also add fruit to it for a different taste!
4. Run a humidifier in your bedroom at night. This can help keep your sinuses moist and reduce congestion.
5. Keep the air filter on your furnace or air conditioning system changed on a regular basis. Window air conditioning units need theirs changed as well.
6. Enforce a NO smoking zone. Don’t let family or friends smoke in your
home. Designate an outdoor area for that if it’s necessary. Cigarette fumes are terrible for your entire body!
7. Try finding honey gathered by a local bee keeper. Take 1 teaspoon a day. It will help build the immunity to the various pollens in your area.
8. Don’t forget Vitamin C! It’s still nature’s best medicine!
I hope these hints are helpful, so you and I can enjoy a wonderful fall season.
And just for laughs, Christmas is only 3 months away, the way I put shopping off, I’d better start now. Have a great rest of the year.
