It’s often said that friends who want to remain friendsshould never talk about politics or religion. If your friendsare BMW fans, then perhaps you might want to addChris Bangle to that list of hands-off topics. No one manhas done more to polarize and stir controversy within theBMW enthusiasts fold than Chris Bangle, former head ofBMW design.
Former you say? As you may not know, BMW has recentlymade some major changes in its design group. If you arehoping that this means that Chris Bangle is out thenunfortunately you will be disappointed. Bangle, a 47year-old American, has been promoted to Director ofBMW Group Design overseeing the design not only ofBMW but also of MINI, Rolls-Royce, BMW Motorradand BMW M.
The new head of BMW design is Dutch born Adrian vanHooydonk, 40, a designer at BMW since 1992 andpresident of DesignworksUSA, the Californian designstudio of the BMW Group, since 2001. He is responsiblefor the current 6 Series and 7 Series among other projectsincluding the Z8 and the controversial Z9 concept car.His philosophy? “A designer—a company—can't beafraid of customer reaction. The vehicles have to evokeemotion, good or bad, and the company must be ready tochange the look of its products at the moment of theirgreatest success.” 1
Looking at the letters section of the monthly BMW CCAmagazine, Roundel, it is pretty clear that the enthusiastfold has not welcomed Bangle or van Hooydonk withopen arms. But honestly, I don’t think BMW cares whatwe think as enthusiasts. We are not the intended targetfor these new designs. Rather, BMW is trying to attractyounger, more technically savvy individuals who are nowjust entering the luxury car market. The message? This isnot your father’s BMW.
And it appears that this strategy is working as theoutstanding sales performance of BMW in 2003 reflects:
Total units sold 981,151 (up 1.6% over 2002)7 Series Automobiles 57,889 (up 8.2%)5 Series Automobiles 185,481 (up 7.6%)Z Series Roadsters 47,049 (up over 100%)(BMW automobiles only)
Sales of the 7 in 2003 set an all-time record for that Seriesand the Z Series roadsters now command over 40% of themarket share of the segment. Only the 3 Series showed
volume declines (down 5.9% with 528,358 units sold)but a scheduled redesign in 2005 should change that.
In my travels with non-enthusiasts, I must admit that thisstrategy is working—at least in my small, statisticallyinsignificant sampling. On seeing a new 7 or 5 or a Z4,the target almost always reacts with an “ooh, what isthat?!” They don’t immediately recognize it as a BMWbut rather see it as a fresh, distinctive design. And they areenergized by it.
Those who have been an enthusiast of the marque forsome time realize it is not the first time that BMW hasstirred up the pot. The jumps from the 2002 to the E21 3 Series or the E28 to the E34 5 Series were almost just ascontroversial. And the same could be said for the E36 3 Series. It was a dramatic shift from the E30 but in time, the true genius of the design was realized and appreciated. The major difference now though with the new 5, 7 andZ4 is that BMW is a much bigger and more successfulcompany with a larger customer and enthusiast base. As a result, there is a lot more attention paid to what they are doing.
I for one relish the direction BMW is taking with theirnew designs. If they are to remain successful andindependent, they must continue to expand their customerbase and grow their overall unit volume. Nothing woulddistress me more than seeing BMW acquired by a GM,Ford or Toyota with their staid and boring designphilosophies. If remaining independent can be achievedthrough cutting edge design and technology, I for onesupport it.
Cheers,Geoff

Owners of BMW’s E39 5 Series, produced between1997 and 2003 usually have
high praise for their vehicle with onenotable exception—the cup holdersare terrible. Grudgingly added as anafterthought by Bavarian engineers, these cup holders do indeed hold acup—a small one—and it helps ifyou remain stationary. When in use, adjustments to the HVAC systembecome very difficult. And if thisweren’t bad enough, they are alsovery fragile – we are on our third pairin just as many years. But there is asolution, the TEC cup holder.
This extremely well made device
utilizes the small console cubbybelow the center armrest. Installationtakes all of a few minutes and reallydoes indeed look factory. To use, simply slide up the door and the unitpivots out, ready for use.
Using a large thermos style coffeemug, I test drove the unit and wasextremely impressed with its stability. My coffee was held firmly in placedespite some aggressive turning andbraking. TEC also includes a set ofsmall rubber pads to fine tune the fitof your favorite mug.
As an owner of an E39, I wouldrecommend the TEC unit. It is well
designed, easy to install, and most ofall, out performs the factory units. The only downside is that it holdsonly one mug. But that would ofcourse be for the passenger as youneed to keep both hands on the wheel.

group of E-36 owners kickedoff the New Year with a techday to address an area of rear
suspension wear we all had incommon: Rear Trailing Arm Bushings. This condition is not unusual withhigh mileage cars and especially thosewith lowered suspensions.
Worn bushings affect the rearsuspension geometry and, therefore, will affect handling. In my case I hadbeen noticing that the tight corneringhandling I prized so much was nolonger there. It had been a gradualchange but it was to the point thatthe rear felt very loose in corners, especially in wet, slippery conditions.Replacing the bushings has broughtback that big smile I used to sportwhen the road is full of curves.
This article will review the stepsinvolved in removing and replacing
the Rear Trailing Arm Bushings.Hopefully this information will beuseful whether you are inclined tohandle the job yourself, or decide toput your car in the hands of yourlocal dealer or independentmechanic.
A GARAGE FOR REAL GEAR HEADSShade-tree maintenance is fairlydifficult in early January, butfortunately Ken Kloes volunteered theuse of his garage in Columbia, Illinois. Not just any garage, mind you, but aheated work space with a lift and a fullassortment of pneumatic tools. The liftalone made the job easier and wasreason for us to be eternally grateful toKen for his hospitality.
John Cox coordinated the event whichled to 4 cars being repaired by eachowner working on his car with otherclub members sharing the wrenching.
Several members showed up just toobserve, learn or offer advice.
WHAT WILL IT COST?If, like me, you are financially driven(actually I’ve outright been called atightwad) you will first want to knowhow hard this will hit the checkbook. The bushings are the cheapestpart of the job at about $37 for theset. You can use the stock part foryour particular model year. Therecommended replacement part forall E-36s are 1996 or later M-3bushings (P/N 33-32-2-228-153).They are a bit beefier than theregular 3 series part. If you go to ashop, labor is where you can expectto get whacked. Although we averagedabout 2 hours per car, when I asked alocal dealer the shop book quotedabout 5 hours of labor, so expect a$400-$500 bill. Since the rearsuspension is being disassembled,

budget for a four wheelalignment as well.
WHAT IS THE RTAB?The Rear trailing arm connectsthe wheel hub to the bodyforward of the differential. It is,therefore, one of the keyelements of the rear multilinksuspension. The bushing isbolted into a housing which issecured to the chassis. This isalso an adjustment point forrear toe alignment. A wornbushing makes it impossible tomaintain the rear toe alignmentsettings within BMW’s twotenth of a degree tolerance.
The bushing itself is a beefyrubber donut with a metalouter housing and centersleeve. The rubber isolates thebody from road vibrations, butit will only last so long underconstant wear. I figure thatafter more than 100,000 miles,it was unreasonable to expectthe original parts to be inserviceable condition. Indeedall bushings were cracked nearthe center, where the loads aremost concentrated.
UGH-UGH, MORE LIMITING!My wife will testify that I justcan’t leave things the way they were and must make“improvements.” This must betypical male, “Tool Time” likebehavior because neither couldthe other people who workedon their E36 that day.
Although they are not a part ofthe OEM assembly, all four carswere also fitted with “BushingLimiters.” These are discs thatfit on either side of the bushingsto reduce any tendency oftrailing to arm to move andaffect the alignment underload. Limiters are availablefrom Turner Motorsports andGround Control. Each offers aslightly different solution tothis problem. Turner’s are madeof blue anodized aluminumand are attached to the bushing
mounting bracket with Allen bolts. These require drilling the bracket, but a template and all hardware isincluded. Ground Control’sapproach is a bit simpler. Theirlimiters are made of Delrin nylonand are simply sandwiched betweenthe bracket and the bushingrequiring no drilling of the bracket. The choice of either bushing is amatter of choice.
TOOLS REQUIRED:I suppose the job could be done onjack stands, but there is a bit ofpushing and shoving required on thecontrol arms. We had the benefit of alift, and the additional support itprovided shouldn’t be underestimated.I wouldn’t say the lift is essential, butit certainly is highly desirable.
The hand tools required are fairlysimple:– 10 mm socket (brake line bracket
bolts)– 18 mm socket (trailing arm
mounting bracket and bushingmounting bolts)
– Chisel and hacksaw (necessary touse the Bushing tool we had)
– Bushing removal and installationtool
– Torque wrench
Replacement of the bushing requiresa special tool to press the old onesout of the rear trailing arm and pressthe new one in. John Cox boughtthis tool through Victory ProductDesign (victoryproductdesign.com)and shared it with the group.
THE REPAIRAfter raising the car and removingthe rear wheels, the first step was tomark the location of the carriermounting bolts with spray paint or adab of paint. As was said before, theposition of the trailing arm relativeto the car chassis sets the rearsuspension toe out. Although analignment is required after the job,you will want to return thesuspension to as close as possible toits original position so you don’tdestroy the tires on the way to thealignment shop.

While the paint dried we began toremove the bracket that attaches thebrake lines to the trailing arm. This isessential since the trailing arm will bereleased from its mounted positionand will be moved beyond its normaltravel path.
Now begins the heavy lifting. Removethe three bolts holding the trailingarm bushing carrier to the undersideof the car. Next remove the bolt thatsecures the trailing arm to the bracket. All these bolts and nuts require an 18mm socket or wrench.
The bushing is now available forremoval. Penetrant oil sprayed on theedge of the bushing is useful here. Touse the tool we had available we hadto remove the lip on the outer ring ofthe bushing. The metal is softaluminum and a chisel and pliers canbe used to bend the material awayfrom the trailing arm and cut it off.The bushing removal tool is attachedso as to draw the bushing away fromthe center of the car. Installing thebushing is done by switching the toolto the inside of the trailing arm andusing the installation block providedwith the tool. A little lubricant on theoutside of the bushing will help itslide into the trailing arm.
The trailing arm bracket is ready to be re-installed at this point. Iflimiters are to be installed, that shouldbe done at this stage. Install the boltthrough the bushing and bracket andtorque the bolt to 81 ft. lbs. Next thetrailing arm and bracket assembly isbolted back to the underbody of thevehicle. The trailing arm and bracketassembly will need to be wrestled intoplace using some leverage. Beforetightening the bolts down, make sureto match the bolts to the paint outlinefrom the first step. Torque theattachment bolts to 57 ft. lbs.
Reattach the brake line bracket andyou’re almost done, or at least halfwaythere if you’re only on the first corner.Install the rear wheels and lower thecar. Don’t forget to torque the lugnuts to 85 ft. lbs. before confirmingthat your car has regained the abilityto make you smile in a sharp corner!

Iwant more power. It is realsimple. Some people don’tunderstand and that is OK with
me; I don’t understand them. Luckilyfor me, some people do understand, and they have spent their entirecareer trying to find a cure for myproblem. Although the condition Iexperience is not curable, themedication comes in the form ofMetric Mechanic: one of the oldestand most prominent manufacturersof aftermarket go-fast goodies forpre-90 BMW’s. On February 7th,the local self-help group (read: St. Louis BMW Club) went to Jim’sfacility like bugs drawn to light.
Upon arrival to the home and shopof Jim Rowe, owner and chiefinformation provider of MetricMechanic, we went on a tour of theprocesses he performs on a dailybasis. We began in a highlyorganized area of the shop thatcontains all of the cores. Considerthis room the source of all myproblems: engines with not quiteenough power, heads that don’tmove enough air, cams that don’tcause my hood to shake.
From this area, the inadequate partsare moved downstairs through acustom fabricated overhead conveyorsystem to a parts cleaner. And inclassic Jim Rowe style, if you can’tbuy what you want, make it. Theparts cleaner is designed and built byJim to fit his specific problem, ordisorder, whatever you choose to callit. He can stack engine blocks, heads,or transmission cases on each otherand shut the door. The custom
conveyor system transports them tothe next area.
The machinery in Metric Mechanicthen begins to work its magic. MetricMechanic is a machine shop; makeno mistake about it. A room full oflathes, tooling, flow benches, mills, and drill presses that he puts to workon hi-performance parts for BMWs.All types of metal working machinesbegin the improvement process. Acylinder-boring machine on a customwinch system enlarges cylinders inengine blocks for more power.Milling machines enlarge ports inheads to flow more air at a faster rate. All types of internals are modified towork with the new modifications tocreate what we want… more power.
Once the individual components aremachined to meet Jim’s requirements, the real beauty begins. Seeminglyinnocent tables transform into holygrounds for the assembly process.Transmissions are taken fromapproximately one million littlepieces into a single durable, power-loving package. The insides of
differentials, customized to meetyour needs, are assembled andchecked to make sure that they canhandle the awesome power they willput to the ground. Heads assembledwith special valves designed by thedoctor himself are manufactured andready to be bolted to their new home.
One-half of the equation is to be ableto develop quality and beneficialaftermarket products that BMW hasfailed to put on the car from thefactory. The other half is to be able tomanufacture those products in a waythat is profitable. Metric Mechanic isa great example of using ingenuityand experience to meld those twoequations together so that we, theconsumer, can have more power andbenefit from years of experience. Mythanks goes to Jim and his shop forletting us know that people are outthere fighting for the cure; and toJim’s better half for the awesomecarved turkey and ham lunch thatshe put together for us. That is theway to an addict’s heart.

Idistinctly remember what it feelslike to have a large chunk ofchocolate chip cookie stuck up
my nose.
Unfortunately, I also remember—like it was yesterday—what it feelslike as the novelty wears off and theteeth of panic grab hold when cookiedoesn’t seem to want to come out.Cookie is lodged in the nose. Cookieis now a part of you on a mostpersonal level. Cookie’s goin’ to sleepwith you tonight.
It scared the hell out of me. What if Iwent through the rest of my life witha rotting cookie up the schnozz? What if when I died, my last gasps ofair had the scent of melted, moldychocolate? What if—horrors, this—I grew up and people laughed at mebecause I was the Boy Who StuckCookies Where They Didn’t Belong?
“Mom,” I thought, “is gonna kill me.”
It’s 1983, I’m two, and my scrawnylittle butt is belted into the backseatof Mom’s ’76 BMW 2002. I’mwearing a rugby jumper. Thecarseat’s got me locked down and Ican’t move. Mom and Dad are inthe front, and we’re tooling alongdown some long-forgotten street.I’ve just shoved a piece of theKeebler family up my right nostril. It takes me a while to decide whatto do next. I pass the time by doingnormal two-year-old stuff. Staringout the window, talking to trees, wriggling. Mom downshifts acouple times going around a cornerand that sound is enough to makeme forget the cookie for a moment.I like it when she drives like that. Idon’t really know what any of itmeans, but I like it. The car soundslike the lions on my See-N-Say, theone that makes the noises of all theanimals and spins around when youpull its string.
Cars are so much cooler than a See-N-Say. Fisher Price ain’t got nuthin’on my mom and her car. Dad’s carisn’t even this cool. I want out of thecarseat. So much to poke at. Two-year-olds live to poke. Pokepokepoke.
Something pops into my head—thecookie’s starting to itch. I make upmy mind. I can’t get it out.
“Mommy?”“Yes, sweetie?”“I got cookie up my nose.”“What? Oh, Sam...,” she shook her
head. The car stops. Woo...never got her to
do that before with just a cookie.“Why did you do that?”“I dunno...” (Really, I wanted to see
if I could make myself sneeze andhave cookie fly out, but telling herthat doesn’t seem like a good idea.)
Fingernails, a mom’s Swiss armyknife, come to the rescue. Aftermuch digging the biggest booger I’veever seen is freed from my nose. Itstill looks like a cookie. Being two,I’m pretty disappointed when Momthrows it out the window.
SPRING 1998Matt tosses his ash on the ground,re-lights the citronella that just wentout, and looks over at me.
“I’m outta cigarettes, man.”“Your point?” I ask.“We should go get some.”“You have a car.”Seth chimes in, “He has no gas,
dumbass.”“I’m supposed to know this?” I toss
my cards on the table and fold thehand. Seth picks ‘em up again andstarts to shuffle.
“I say we run to Convenient,” hesays, “and I say you drive, ‘causewe haven’t ridden in your new caryet, you dork.”
“Right. Screw that. I don’t feel like
driving,” I mutter. Matt looks at me funny. “What, like
that matters? Grab your damnkeys.”
I stick my hands in my pockets, sigh, and start rooting around for the keys.I’m sick of sitting here anyways—that candle doesn’t do any good andthe bugs are making meatfields outof my legs. Mid-root, Matt’s facesuddenly lights up with that Cheshirecat grin he keeps around all the time. His arm whips up, and the glint inhis eye matches the one in his palm.
My keys. The bastard.
Seth just laughs, and they both jumpout of their chairs, walking towardsmy car. I follow, knowing there’s noway in hell I’d let Matt drive it. Hell,Matt scares the crap outta me justwalking next to him. We get to thecar, he tosses me the keys, and Iunlock it. Matt, the skinny guy, flipsthe passenger backrest forward andlaunches himself into the backseat.Seth, built like a rugger, flops intothe front. The doors shut with thatfamiliar German heavy padlockthwack. These guys are my friends, and strangely enough, we fit the carthe way three high school guys aren’tsupposed to fit small Germansportscars: well.
It’s the same car, almost, that I gotthe cookie stuck up my nose in. A’74 BMW 2002tii. Two years older, metallic blue instead of gray, andfuel-injected instead of thatobnoxious little Solex downdraft. The injection adds the suffix “tii”onto the name. It rolls off yourtongue: tii.
I put the car in gear, and the roadtears off beneath us. Seth just looksover and starts searching in hispockets for loose change. Matt latchesan arm onto the grab handles that

hang from the door pillars, and I seehis head sway from side to side in themirror with the movements of thecar, shifting each time it takes a set inthe corners. How to get there... TheLong Way? The Long Way. It goesdown through a valley. More charisma.Roads need charisma. Charisma isgood. I pick up the pace.
Thanks to some things the previousowner did before I bought it, the carcorners flatter than a 25-year-old2400-pound sedan with three peoplein it ought to. Even given that, though, we’re going a bit faster thanprudence and my lame-o sixteen-year-old’s driving skills should allow.Still, we keep pressing on, and Ilaugh under my breath, grinning.
We come a bit faster than expectedinto one corner, and my overconfidencedoes everything but quell the tinglesbuilding on my skin. No matter. Thecar just picks up and tracks rightaround. A little tire noise, but nocomplaints whatsoever. Saved, and Ihad nothing to do with it. Mustnot’ve been going that fast after all.Surprises the hell outta me.
“This car...,” says Matt, taking abreath, “this car is pretty cool.”
I laugh again, up the speed a notch, and do things with the wheel andpedals I probably shouldn’t. Thewinding, twisting road eventuallycomes up onto the crest of a hill, straightens out, and elbows aroundthe C-store we’re headed for. We pullinto the parking lot, come to a halt, and I turn the key off. Matt and Sethamble in with that familiar slacker-highschool-gettin’-the-cigarettes-gait.I just stand in front of the hood, hands in my pockets, staring at thegrilles, listening to the exhaust tick asit cools. The car looks back at me,smiling, as if to say, “Ok, what next?”
SUMMER 1999There’s something to be said aboutextra-legal speeds on Appalachianinterstates. Legal or not, they’re a hellof a lot of fun. You can’t really sayyou know your best friend until you’vespent some serious time grinning like
idiots at each other across the lanes atninety miles an hour while the road—with a speed limit of 70, mindyou—crests mountaintops and goesplunging back down into green-blanketed valleys.
Not craziness, or stupidity, or racing, simply just good old-fashioned High-Speed Travel.
We’ve decided to go tearing down toSouth Carolina for a pilgrimage tothe BMW factory in Spartanburg.Through the internet, a hasty groupof 2002 owners was thrown together, and there’s supposed to be a barbecue,a factory tour, all kinds of great stuff. We bomb down Highway 85, firstme leading, then him, then me –both of us in 02s. His a ’69, mine a’76. Both cars look a hell of a lotolder than they drive, which is whatmakes ‘em so great. The element ofsurprise.
Seth had just bought his. We foundit in AutoTrader – that weekly ragthat costs a dollar-fifty in the tabloidaisle of the grocery. Anybody can putan ad in there for free. This is both agood and a bad thing. Finding decentcars there is akin to trying to drinkhot coffee through your nose (it canbe done, but only if you’re reallycareful and have got a lot of time totry). He got lucky.
It took a year of riding right-seat withme up and down the back roads ofLouisville, but Seth finally succumbed. He still had the grocery-haulin’pizza-deliverin’ cruise missile of aVolvo 745 he always had, but he’dsomehow also wiled his parents intogiving him the spare garage bay tohold the 2002. He found the money, cleaned out the garage, and suddenly,by God, Blau-mit-Weiss had claimedanother. What possessed us to wantto drive six hours through theAmerican south in the August heat, with no air conditioning, no fifth gear, and barely a radio each I’ll never know.
The mountains around theNorth/South Carolina border are sodense that you rarely go a mile on theinterstate without passing through a
tunnel. The noise alone is worth it—back when cars growled straight offthe showroom floor, the ’02 wasn’tmuch of a growler. But today, in aworld of appliance-quiet toastermobiles, the song of two uncatalysed, non-strangled 2-liter fours side by sidethrough a fifty-yard concrete tube isface-slappingly real. Just when youstart to get used to it—WHAM—you explode out onto the other sideand the noise dissipates into the air, replaced by the rush of air aroundthe vent windows.
I glance down at the gauges. We’rehalfway through the small finger ofNorth Carolina that separatesTennessee from the rest of the civilizedEast. Temp’s right in the middle;always a happy thought. Up the nexthill, my foot finds the floorboard, andthe car surges forward. Seth, sidelinedfrom such antics by overheatingproblems, gives me the finger andlaughs as my car sings. I watch, absentmindedly, in the mirror as hegets smaller and smaller, then finallydisappears from view.
All of the sudden, I’m alone. I burstout of a tunnel again, and there’s noone—no one—on this highway withme. Guardrails to the right, a fifty-foot drop below, stone cliff to theleft, and me. All alone with the car. Ithums along, unfettered. A single-minded purpose: motion.
A moment later, I snap out of it andrealize I just blew off my only travelpartner for this trip. It takes me aminute to figure out I just left Sethfarther behind than I thought—mylittle driving trance must’ve lastedlonger than it seemed. I slow downand ease off onto the shoulder to sitfor a second. The car waits, and idlessmooth as glass—almost as if itknows better things are yet to come, and it had damn well be ready. A fewmoments pass. Almost as if on cue,Seth comes storming up in themiddle of a clump of traffic. I putthe car in gear, and it occurs to methat right now, there’s no place I’drather be.
