UCCS RECEIVES GRANT FOR NEW MUSIC INSTRUMENTS Unity has instruments! Thescholars could not be moreexcited. Our music teacher, Ms.Wulff, has recently received newOrff instruments. Theseinstruments are part of the Orffapproach. This approach foundedby Carl Orff, combines music,movement, drama and speech intolessons. "With these newinstruments, we will be able tostart an Orff ensemble, organizea bucket band, and also helpstudents with dexterity andcoordination," said Ms. Wulff. Ms.Wulff has big plans to integratemusic into our curriculum tocontinue to help our scholarsgrow and expand.

OUR BEGINNING TEACHER OF THE YEAR NOMINEEEvery year North Carolina recognizes a beginning teacher with theaward of Beginning Teacher of the year. This year Ms. Sheila Goadnominated one of our 2nd grade teachers, Ms. Christina Wunder, forthis honor. Ms. Goad says, "Ms. Wunder strives to make learning fun forher students. Parents can feel how much she cares and wants to see allher students succeed." Congratulations to Ms. Wunder on this fantasticaccomplishment! (see page 2 for Ms. Wunder's reaction)

How did you feel when you found out Ms. Goad selected you?

ONE ON ONE with Ms. Christina Wunder . . .

1.When I found out Ms. Goad selected me, I felt very honored for this award! Atfirst I was a bit overwhelmed with being in the spotlight, but I am very proud ofmy accomplishment! I have put a lot of hard work into my teaching.

2. How did this journey begin?I started with Unity in the beginning as an Instructional Assistant! I was inkindergarten and then moved to second grade. When I started at Unity, I begantaking graduate courses to get my teaching certificate and license. I had theopportunity in the second year to teach as I was completing my student teachingand finally last year had my very first full year of teaching with second grade!

3. What makes UCCS special to you?I love Unity! The staff and students at Unity make teaching such a pleasure. Unity's curriculum has a lot ofrigor that allows the students to really dive deep into their learning. Unity is so special because of theconnections built here between everyone; I feel I am part of a family!
