Gastrak® Economisers
Reduced weld process gas consumption and improve weld quality
30th January 2015
Weld Process – Gas Wastage
• The weld process gas (or shielding gas) is often wasted through:
• Leaks – pipeline, poorly maintained equipment, damaged hoses, etc
• Preweld surge (next slides)
• Excessive flow rate(next slides)
Preweld surge
• Often a surge of shielding gas can be heard at the start of each weld?
• This is a common and very wasteful phenomenon called ‘pre-weld surge’.
• This is caused by poorly performing gas control equipment. Gastrak® economisers minimise pre-weld surge.
Excessive Flow Rates
• Many welders believe that a higher gas flow rate gives a better weld. This is not true.
• There is an optimum flow rate for each application.
• Gastrak® economisers ensure that optimum flow rates are used.

Summary Of The Range
Adjusting & Locking Facility
• All units should be set-up by an Application Specialist to ensure the optimum settings.
• The Classic and Flow versions of the Gastrak® economisers are adjusted using a ‘snake-eye’ screwdriver bit – this would be set-up by an Applications Specialist
• In the future, it will be possible to cap-off the snake-eye. This will be locked with a blue tag by Application Specialists, but a workshop supervisor will be provided with green tags. This will help identify if the settings have been changed and by who.
Applications
• Gastrak® economisers should be targeted towards larger users with Bulk or CryoEase® piped gas installations:
• Defending existing business – reducing the gas spend at customers without the need for lowering the gas price to match a competitor
• Winning new business – allowing Air Products to achieve a higher price and to increase the saving for a prospect. This approach helps to demonstrate Air Products’ technical competence and understanding of a prospects process
Selling The Benefits
• Part of your toolkit is about getting onto into the workshop and using your knowledge of the benefits of the Gastrak® economisers to ask the following ‘high-gain’ questions…
Which welding processes are you using?
How do you measure flow?
How often do you check for your welding equipment for leaks?
What are your current flow rates?
• How much gas do you think you waste through preweld surge?
•How do you set your gas flow rates?

Gas Efficiency Survey
• Use your high-gain questions to get agreement to conduct a gas efficiency survey
• Conducted by an Applications Specialists the assessment will…• Record the current flow rates (using a calibrated digital
flow meter)• Recommend optimum flow rates• Identify leaks• Document gas-related safety issues• Recommend which Gastrak® economisers to use• Estimate the potential savings achieved through Gastrak®
economisers

Gastrak® Economisers - Commercial
• Our standard approach is to rent the economisers
• Always complete a Supply Agreement Addendum to record the number of units deployed
• The standard monthly fee, per unit, includes the care of the unit and periodic Safety & Efficiency Assessments:
• £5.00/€6.00/$8.00/50CNY per unit, per month
• Air Products would rather rent the unit for ‘free’ than to give it away – as we can suggest removing ‘our’ unit if the user wants to cease being a customer of Air Products
• Approval from Sales Manager if need to discount from above
• Addendum still required if economisers are supplied on free rent as this records how many the units are held by the customer
Supply Agreement Addendum
Customer details and date
Quantity of units at customer site, plus monthly charge
Summary Process
1
•Agree with customer/prospect to install Gastrak® economisers
2
•Complete supply agreement addendum•(
see previous slide)
3
•Initiate and set-up MSC
4
•Supply Gastrak® economiser to person setting-up the unit (e.g. Application Specialist)
5
•Install and set-up the Gastrak® economiser at the customer site
Gastrak® Economisers Packaged
• Gastrak® optimisers are set to an optimum flow by an Application Specialist
• This flow is agreed with the workshop supervisor
Gastrak® Economisers - Setup
• Using a special tool attachment, the Gastrak® classic optimiser and the Gastrak® flow optimiser are locked and cannot be adjusted unless the tool is used
• The special adjusting tool is left with the workshop supervisor
• Supervisors can still adjust the flow using the special adjuster
Summary
1. Agree with prospect to carry out an ‘gas economy survey’
2. Application Specialists accompanies BDM with digital flow
measuring equipment completed Gas Efficiency Survey
3. Prospect agrees for Gastrak® optimisers to be installed
4. BDM and prospect completes and signs Supply Agreement
Addendum Form (see next slides)
5. BDM orders Gastrak® optimisers via the workbook for
delivery to the GIS team or Application Specialist
6. The Application Specialist sets-up the units to the optimum
and agreed flow
7. BDM to advise Customer Services to charge a MSC for the
Gastrak® optimisers (or increase the charge accordingly if the customer already has an MSC).
8. Applications Specialists to add periodic reassessments to
stewardship plan
