ANNUAL REPORT 2011
Full Circle Fund’s mission is to cultivate leaders and drive positive social change in the Bay Area. Our organization accomplished an incredible amount in 2011 and we’re excited to share it with you in our first formal annual report. As you read on, you’ll see that together, we can truly do more. It’s what happens when you bring together a community of smart, talented people with varied experiences and backgrounds, united by a shared passion to make a difference. We started 2011 with the question —“What are the most pressing problems?”— and our Members went to work to explore the issues and identify solutions. In Education, we focused our efforts on child advocacy, blended learning, and teacher performance and evaluation. In Global Economic Opportunity, we dove into entrepreneurship, community engagement, and anti-poverty efforts. In Environment, we joined the collaborative consumption movement to further advance this redefined approach to sharing. Together we identified and invested in eight innovative organizations we thought could make a profound impact. A healthy mix of early stage to more mature enterprises, they represent some of the best and brightest in the Bay Area. Members leveraged their time, talent, and networks to help these nonprofits advance their critical work. We’re proud to present some highlights in the upcoming pages. This year was also a time of transition. We embarked on a strategic planning process to evaluate our grantmaking initiatives, programs, and our Members’ needs. We learned a lot. We said farewell to longtime leader Amy Lesnick, and added four new Directors to our outstanding Board. We’re proud of our accomplishments, but we have much work ahead. As we continue to refine our model and programs, we are committed to creating the best possible experience for our Members, and to leveraging the most resources for our grant partners so they can impact the community. You’ve made an investment in Full Circle Fund to help accelerate positive change. We thank you for your support and hope you will continue to join us in this effort. Together, we can truly do more.

campaign to enlist employers and commercial property owners to increase the number of charging
stations downtown. www.bc3sfbay.org
CHILDREN NOW is a national organization for people who care about children and want to ensure
that they are the top public priority. We supported social entrepreneur Ted Lempert and evangelized
their efforts with key stakeholders in California. www.childrennow.org
ED100 is an online resource to help individuals develop knowledge and perspective as leaders in

attention to important developments and put them in the context of the big picture. www.ed100.org
FAMILY INDEPENDENCE INITIATIVE (FII) is a national center for anti-poverty innovation
offering asset-based, community-driven solutions. We lent our expertise in the strategy, design, and
launch of their new online community. www.fiinet.org
IDEX (INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT EXCHANGE) promotes sustainable solutions to poverty
in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. At a key inflection point in their growth plan, we developed a donor
messaging campaign across multiple mediums to expand their reach. www.idex.org
KHAN ACADEMY was founded by Salman Khan with the vision of providing a free world-class
education to anyone, anywhere. By creating an instructional toolkit for classroom teachers, we
advanced Khan’s proof of concept in two pilot districts. www.khanacademy.org

Bay Area. We helped successfully launch ExitTicket, an innovative blended learning initiative for
students to leverage mobile technology in the classroom. www.leadps.org

OUR 2011 GRANT PARTNERS
“Khan Academy is excited about working with innovative organizations like Full Circle Fund who aren't afraid to challenge some of the basic assumptions in education in order to meet individual student needs. Their Members developed an online toolkit that is now helping provide inroads for classroom teachers who want to utilize our lessons in a blended learning model.”

OUR IMPACT HIGHLIGHTS: Education
LEADERSHIP PUBLIC
SCHOOLS (LPS)
PROJECT Launch ExitTicket, a new application designed to help low-income students leverage mobile technology in the classroom. Members played a critical role in the initial research and strategy sessions, implementation, and ongoing counsel. IMPACT LPS reported Members’ “brain trust and thought leadership were invaluable” and saved over 200 hours of staff time, valued at $25,000. Full Circle Fund’s work was instrumental in LPS receiving the Next Generation Learning Challenge award, and an anticipated $100,000 grant from The Stupski Foundation for ExitTicket. 150 student lives have been touched and the number is projected to reach 1,500 students by the end of 2012. By 2013, over 3,000 students will be reached.
“It’s inspiring to see the convergence of technology and education in action. Our team was able to be a part of an
exciting new initiative that is changing the way students learn in the classroom.”
AARON MCDANIEL | MEMBER Senior Director, Business Development & Global Strategy AT&T
PIVOT LEARNING PARTNERS
PROJECT Help Pivot lead 11 Sonoma County school districts through a change process to improve outcomes for thousands of students and provide a more professional and fulfilling working environment for teachers and school leaders.
IMPACT Reached 95 educators in 11 districts, serving more than 43,000 children. If half the districts take the next step to redesign their systems, over 20,000 California students will be directly impacted. Members contributed 160 staff hours, saving Pivot an estimated $20,000. Pivot secured $15,000 of additional corporate funding from State Farm and four new fee-for-service contracts including Moreland Union School District, Novato Unified, Fremont Unified, and the Sonoma County Office of Education.
“We truly benefited from Full Circle Fund’s action-oriented
philanthropy. They provided the financial support to seed 11 new
district teacher evaluation redesign projects, and worked shoulder to shoulder with us to curate and facilitate four very
effective workshops.”

OUR IMPACT HIGHLIGHTS: Environment & Global Economic Opportunity
BUSINESS COUNCIL ON CLIMATE CHANGE (BC3)
PROJECT Produce an actionable strategy to help BC3 address “range anxiety” and to increase the availability of Electric Vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in commercial buildings throughout San Francisco. The fear of running out of electricity and being unable to charge is the greatest barrier to EV consumer adoption.
IMPACT Members armed BC3 with the contacts, strategy, and outreach plan to reach building managers, tenants, and owners in over 100 commercial buildings in downtown San Francisco. Tools and resources created by Members will help BC3 fundraise for their EV program. Member support also opened the door to relevant potential funding opportunities. Full Circle Fund saved BC3 at least $10,000 of staff member time and up to $3,000 on design for print and online materials.
“Full Circle Fund goes far beyond traditional grantmaking. BC3
received much needed financial and in-kind support for this important initiative, and developed strategic relationships with a diverse and
accomplished team of professionals."
KATHERINE MICHONSKI
Director Business Council

“The Environment Circle was excited
to take on a project that would
help increase Electric Vehicle usage in the city. It was very gratifying to work with members and an outstanding grant partner to address climate change in
this way.”

FAMILY INDEPENDENCE INITIATIVE (FII)
PROJECT Scale FII’s reach from a few cities up to 60 through the conceptualization of UpTogether, a web-based community-building site. The team lent expertise in the strategy and design of this online community to encourage nationwide participation and reduce poverty. IMPACT Members’ time contribution saved the organization two thirds of a full-time staff member. Full Circle Fund’s team increased the beta supporter community enrollment by 50% and put a structure in place to officially launch by mid 2012. Members saved FII over $3,000 by connecting them to a leading design firm that conceptualized and designed the UpTogether website.
"We unequivocally gained incredible value from our engagement with Full Circle Fund. The team brought to light strategic issues we probably would not have considered, and helped us gain access to real market data from supporters."
JORGE BLANDON Vice President Family Independence Initiative
“Partnering with FII was extremely rewarding, both professionally and personally. It provided an
opportunity to interact with a diverse and talented team of members, with the common goal of helping a great non-profit achieve greater scale and impact."
