FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dr Mark Merry On Tuesday the annual Dux Assembly was held to recognise those students who had achieved ATARs over 90 in the 2015 VCE year and to award the major academic prizes for the year. To continue the theme of commemorating the 50th year of the School all of the previous “Duces” were invited to return and join us at this assembly. Afterwards they were taken on a tour of the School. For some, this was the first time they had been back for decades and the tour proved to be quite an ‘eye opener’. One of the highlights of the assembly was the Occasional Address given by Mr David Robb, the first Dux of the School from the class of 1971. David, a Foundation Student, is the CEO of Iluka Mining, an ASX business and one of Australia’s largest mining companies. As David needed to attend a Board Meeting in Perth, he very kindly delivered his address on the big screen in the Performing Arts Centre. Our award winners were honoured with a certificate from the School and a number of prizes were presented by the Chair of Yarra Valley Grammar, Mrs Sarah Tipping. GENERAL EXCELLENCE AWARDS Each year, when we consider the School’s top awards, our final considerations involve students whose contributions in their final year have been outstanding. The criteria used are superior academic performance, significant contribution to cultural activities and sporting activities and outstanding leadership. Each year, Certificates of General Excellence are awarded to a small number of students. Certificates of General Excellence to: MARGARET DENNISTON CLARKE AWARD This award is presented each year to the Year 12 student who best fulfills the conditions of the Rhodes scholarship, that is, superior scholastic achievement, exceptional contribution to cultural activities, exceptional contribution to sporting activities and outstanding leadership. Scholastic achievements are judged by performance in School work as shown by grades achieved and by results on the external VCE examinations as reflected by the ATAR score. The qualities of contributions in sporting and cultural activities are judged after consultation with teaching staff that are well placed to make such judgments. In a similar way, with regard to leadership, the opinion of senior staff members whose positions provide a suitable opportunity for judging leadership is sought. The recipient receives an award of $1,000 from the School Board. For the academic year 2015, the recipient of the Margaret Denniston Clarke Award is Laila Halim. PRESENTATION OF DUX The term ‘Dux’ refers to the most academically successful student in a School or a division of a School. Our Dux for the academic year 2015 achieved amongst the very top students in the State. They received a Certificate of General Excellence, two subject awards and the Margaret Denniston Clarke Award. The Dux at Yarra Valley Grammar for the academic year 2015 is Laila Halim. I take this opportunity to acknowledge the achievements of the Class of 2015. Excellence is achieved partly through natural ability but largely through sustained hard work, motivation, persistence and a sense of purpose. This requires self-discipline, denial of short term gain to achieve long term goals. The Class of 2015 worked as a team, cooperating together to create a productive working environment. They ought to be proud of their abilities but more so proud of an achievement borne of purpose. Our Dux Assembly focuses on academic excellence both for our current students and in this our birthday year for the generations of students who have strived to: “Lift their eyes” and aspire to do great things. But I remember with great affection the contribution that the Class of 2015 made to the broader life of our school…the musicians, actors, sportsmen and women, debaters and friends. We celebrate their achievements but we also celebrate who they have been to us and who they have become as young adults.
REFLECTION Mr Paul Joy Chaplain THEREFORE, ENCOURAGE ONE ANOTHER Earlier today I got to spend time supporting and cheering for students at the Junior School Swimming Sports. It was a great day with plenty of proud parents and grandparents watching on which, together with the organisation of staff and excitement of students, makes for an electric atmosphere. A highlight for me was to observe the genuine encouragement offered to all our swimmers. I think we do that well here at Yarra. We sincerely want each other to do our best. The roar of the crowd around the pool, beautifully maintained by our ground staff, is testament to the supportive culture we’re privileged to be part of. But let’s not take it for granted, we need to nurture that culture. Earlier this week our Secondary School gathered together with former students and special guests to celebrate our Dux Assembly. It was a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge effort and success and to encourage one another in our pursuit to be the best version of ourselves we can be. Encouraging one another on the big stage is one thing, and we should continue to do that. How much more powerful, though, is a personal word of encouragement, a handwritten note or an individual acknowledgement! Intentional encouragement is even more powerful that broad sweeping statements. And while we ought not sit around waiting for individualised feedback, we could be more proactive in offering it. Imagine if, every day, each one of us was intentional about encouraging one other person. In a community our size, that’s a whole lot of positive words of affirmation and support that can only lead to growth. Try it for a week, I dare you! You’ll become so much more in tune to the wonderful things happening around you and the people who make them so. As you notice them, acknowledge them, individually, to the person; let them know, build them up, thank them, appreciate them, value them, encourage them. Just a moment of your time, an act of thoughtful and personal encouragement, can make an extraordinary difference to another.
Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. (1 Thessalonians 5:11)

SENIOR SCHOOL Mr Andrew Hocking Deputy Principal, Head of Senior School KWONG LEE DOW YOUNG SCHOLARS PROGRAM The Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars program is an academic enrichment program designed to support high achieving Victorian senior secondary students. The program offered by the University of Melbourne is named in honour of Professor Kwong Lee Dow, an eminent scholar, leading educationalist and former Vice Chancellor of the University of Melbourne. The program commences in Year 11, continues into Year 12 and concludes in the student’s first year of university if the recipient chooses to study at the University of Melbourne. It offers recipients from all schools the opportunity to engage with the university and each other through an extensive range of activities and events at the university’s Parkville Campus. Following an extensive application process, students are admitted into the program at the end of Year 10 based on their academic performance, leadership and their involvement in a range of other areas of School endeavour. At the Dux Assembly on Tuesday of this week, it was with pleasure that current Year 11 student Finley Griffett was announced as the Yarra Valley Grammar student who has been accepted into the Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars program for the Class of 2016. Congratulations Finley
PARENT INFORMATION EVENINGS Thank you to the parents and carers who attended the Year 10 Parent Information Evening on Tuesday evening and it is hoped that the information shared and having the chance to meet your daughter/son’s tutor was beneficial. The final parent information evening is for Year 11 and will be held next Monday 15 February, 6.50pm for 7.00pm. Hugh Van Cuylenberg from the Resilience Project will be the guest speaker. He and members of his team will be working with the Year 11 students and staff during the course of the year. Parents and carers attending are asked to enter via the north foyer of the Performing Arts Centre. Queries can be directed to Kim Treganowan in the Senior School office. Students do not attend.
UNIFORM All students and parents are reminded that school uniform requirements are stated in the Student Planner. In summary, the school blazer must be worn to school each day. In Terms 1 and 4, students will be advised during the day if the blazer is to worn home. Students who are unable to wear the full school uniform on a particular day must contact the Senior School office and a uniform pass will be issued. Girls are reminded that red ribbons can only be worn and that ‘ballet style’ shoes are not to be worn to school. Your support is appreciated. CONGRATULATIONS TO…. Daniel Scholz (Year 10) who achieved the great figures of 7/32 in an Under 16 Stars versus Renegades Showcase match last weekend and also to Sam Harper (Class of 2015) who made his debut for the Victorian Bushrangers in their Sheffield Shield match against Tasmania last week. Sam is now the youngest debut wicketkeeper for Victoria and now holds the record for the most number of catches by a wicketkeeper on debut, taking 9 catches.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Mr Paul Cherry International Student Coordinator CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATION – YEAR OF THE MONKEY Xīn Nián Kuài Lè! 新年快乐! (Happy New Year!) Last Monday, 8 February marked an important day for many communities in Australia and across the world as the new moon heralded the beginning of the Year of the Monkey. The start of the Lunar New Year prompts wide celebrations in China and many other countries. Here at Yarra Valley, both international and local students joined together to mark the occasion with a lunch in the Sports Pavilion. The delicious lunch consisted of boiled and fried dumplings which are traditionally eaten as the shape of the dumplings resembles ancient Chinese money. Golden spring rolls representing gold bars were also eaten. Eating foods such as this is thought to start off the New Year in a spirit of luck and prosperity. This holiday is also called the ‘Spring Festival’ in China and it is a time of family reunion. The International captains, Charles Zhang and Serene Zhang gave a short speech informing students of the special significance of the time and wishing all a harmonious 2016.
If you were born in 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992 or 2004 then your Chinese zodiac sign is the Monkey. This
year in particular is the year of the Fire Monkey. People born in Monkey years are considered to be intelligent, adaptable and energetic. Good luck this year!
MIDDLE SCHOOL Mrs Julie Hall Deputy Principal, Head of Middle School ‘Working hard becomes a habit, a serious kind of fun. You get self-satisfaction from pushing yourself to the
limit, knowing that all the effort is going to pay off’ Mary Lou Retton
My quote this week comes from the famous gymnast Mary Lou Retton who won gold, two silver and 2 bronze medals at the 1984 Summer Olympics. I feel the sentiment embedded in this quote applies well to the discussions we are having at School about rigour, engagement, work ethic and best effort.
CO-CURRICULAR INVOLVEMENT 2016 We offer a number of activities that augment the learning, school experience and development of students. These activities which include sport, productions, music, debating and community links are collectively known as co-curricular points. The expectation is that all Year 7, 8 & 9 students will involve themselves in activities that collect a minimum of 30points each School year. Students are encouraged and supported to involve themselves in more than the minimum requirement and students that do so receive significant recognition from the School in terms of awards and Service to School certificates. The following points determine the Service to School Award level achieved: -
Bronze Service to School – 45 -55pts
Silver Service to School – 56 – 70 pts
Gold Service to School – 71 -85 pts
Platinum Service to School – 86+ pts
Documentation will be sent home via email for each Middle School student. Please read and consider with your child the co-curricular opportunities, print the final pages titled ‘Selection and Information sheet’ fill out with consideration to the activities your child would like to be involved in and with the awards and recognition they would like to work towards. The completed sheet needs to be returned to Mrs Carolyn Tait in the Middle School Office. [email protected] MIDDLE SCHOOL LEADER’S RETREAT

SPORT Mr Bryan Harper Director of Sport SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN SPORT ADMINISTRATION There have a couple of keys changes to the administration and management of sport.
1. Jarrod Carlson has been appointed the Boys Sports Coordinator. Micahl Creamer remains the Girls Sport Coordinator as does Bryan Harper the Director of Sport. This means all communication about boys sport should go to Jarrod Carlson including communication about injury, illness and requests for exemptions.
• [email protected] / or phone the school on 9262 7700 • Saturday communication with sport. Phone 0409 413 009. Please use this number for
assistance or to communicate unavailability due to illness on the day. Someone will be answering this phone from 6.45am onwards.
2. Adjustments to fixtures due to weather or cancellation will be communicated via the Yarra Valley
Grammar website / sports section. This is a more efficient way of communicating and can be updated more easily and quickly than a phone line.
3. After school training nights for summer and winter sport will be Tuesdays and Thursdays in 2016. This will include Firsts teams, athletics and any other training for development squads or the like. Swimming has a unique program in order to offer students the chance to manage all their commitments at the school. Please note that if a sports training is called on another evening and it clashes with another school activity, the other school activity will take precedence.
SWIMMING PROGRAM The AGSV swimming season and training preparation is in full swing. Thanks to Brooke Norman and Steve Treadwell who are overseeing the team’s preparation this summer. For further enquiries please contact Steve Treadwell at the school. AFL EXTRA SKILLS DEVELOPMENT PRACTICE To all students in the Yarra Valley Grammar football teams from year 7 through 12. We are conducting skill sessions with excellent coaches on Thursdays after school in term one. The first session is Thursday February 18. Details: Patterson Oval from 3.40pm, bring runners, boots and drink bottle. EXTRA FITNESS SESSIONS IN TERM ONE IN PREPARATION FOR WINTER SPORT Students preparing for winter firsts sport teams are encouraged to attend extra fitness sessions being conducted on Monday and Wednesday mornings in the Fitness room. Arrive at 6.55am with drink bottle. Qualified Exercise Physiologists are running the sessions. TENNIS PROGRAM All Yarra Valley Grammar students interested in quality tennis coaching and involvement in the game should speak to Head Coach Chris Guy. Chris has been an outstanding coach at Yarra Valley Grammar and recently has worked with Sam Groth on tour. Chris is one of the leading coaches at Tennis Works. Contact Chris on 0412 238 452 or email [email protected]
2016 SPORTS DATES AND INFORMATION The website has been updated today with the latest Information Booklet and more detailed sports calendar. We provide these documents to assist you in planning your involvement for 2016. Any queries should be directed to Mr Bryan Harper on [email protected] DOGS AT AGSV SPORT The School appreciates that some families like to bring their dogs to AGSV events and other sporting activities at the School. However, in doing so, the School expects that families will be responsible for their dogs at all times. This means that the owner should always be in control of the dog and pick up after the dog so that no mess is left on the playing fields, etc. If parents have any questions about this or would like further information, please contact the Director of Sport, Bryan Harper.

JUNIOR SCHOOL Mr Chris Lawson Deputy Principal – Head of Junior School Our children have settled in well, with ELC children now up to full day attendance and our Preps still having Wednesdays ‘off’ until their initial testing is finished. I remind parents that no students should be on play equipment before or after school and that all students should be collected (or on buses) by 3.55pm. If parents require Afterschool Care they should contact Camp Australia directly. Our Year 3 - 6 children participated in the Annual House Swimming Sports today and given the closeness to the start of the school year, we were pleased with their efforts. A full report will be in next week’s Valley Voice. On Monday, we will be presenting Class Captain badges to our Term 1 leaders from Years 3 – 6 and these students will form part of our SRC. JUNIOR SCHOOL ASSEMBLY - MONDAY 15 FEBRUARY AT 2.40PM IN THE PAC Congratulations to the following students who have been elected to the Junior School Council. They will be presented with their badges at the Junior School Assembly.

Collectively, this group forms the Junior School Council, a student representative body that meets once a week at lunchtime to discuss issues and concerns pertinent to the Junior School. The meetings have been responsible for a number of significant and important improvements to the Junior School over the years. The benefits of the leadership opportunities provided are many and varied. We wish our leaders every success as they carry out the many duties entrusted to them.

JUNIOR MUSIC NOTES Mrs Rachel Schmidli Junior School Music The Year 5 instrumental program began with a flourish this week!
The students attended an Instrumental Expo and were entertained and enthralled by demonstrations of brass, woodwind and string instruments. Then we divided into House groups and took turns to experience the instruments up nice and close. Next week the students start will learning how to play these beautiful brand new instruments. Thank you to our 'Musical Maestros' Mrs De Castella, Mrs Legge, Mr Turner and Mr Templeton and to the sensational parent group YARRA MUSIC for donating the instruments.
All Junior Music ensembles are now up and running! If you have a new student to the School who may be interested in joining an ensemble please contact Mrs Duck or Mrs Schmidli
