One great potluck after worship deserves an-other! We had plenty of delicious food for over 30 guests from Renewal Ranch as well as our congrega-tion on July 14. On August 18 we will have another potluck, but this time we will only have one guest, Janet Marshall, from the United Methodist Founda-tion of Arkansas (UMFA). That day will also be a cele-bration of our church’s heritage and future. According to a brochure, “The UMFA is a non-profit organization that serves Arkansas United Meth-odist Churches, institutions and people. We offer the practical means for linking today’s hopes to to-morrow’s dreams. Our focus is fostering stewardship that not only strengthens and supports existing min-istry, but dares to dream for the future.” UMFA as-sists individuals with estate planning, serving as Trustee of life-income gift arrangements, revocable trusts and permanent charitable funds, and also providing counsel on giving alternatives. The Foun-dation serves churches by managing investment funds, creating permanent endowment funds, and giving loans for construction projects. It also pro-vides scholarships for seminary students who will be-come pastors in Arkansas, and for persons to attend leadership development events (some of our members have received these scholarships). Janet Marshall will make a presentation at the potluck on how the UMFA can benefit our church and its members. Join us for this special day in the life of our church. Pastor Steve

Breakthrough Prayer Initiative– August

“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us…(Ephesians 3:20).” Do we really believe the above verse? How often do we audaciously ask God to act in super-natural ways? This verse says that God is able to do more than we can imagine that he can do. And, I can imagine amazing things. But sometimes we don’t ask God to do that which is impossible (at least for mere humans). For most of us, we have at least one request that we have presented to God over a long period of time, but it has not been answered, or at least not yet. But sometimes, we don’t ask God about powerfully acting on behalf of ourselves or the church because we don’t really believe God can or will act. It is certainly true that God will never be badgered or tricked into an-swering a prayer that is not consistent with his will or purpose, nor will he answer a prayer that will not bring glory to his Name or Kingdom. But, let’s pray boldly this month. The prayer challenge this month is to offer a bold prayer to God that can only be answered if the God of the uni-verse acts. Are you or a family member enslaved to an addiction or habit? Do you or someone you love have a life-threatening health condition? Are you hoping and waiting for a child for you and your spouse? Do you need help with a financial problem that is so big only God can make it happen? Do you have a family member or friend who hasn’t allowed Jesus to become his/her Savior and Lord? Is our church functioning in the power of the Holy Spirit? Is our church being the voice, the hands and feet of Jesus in our community? What is your challenge? What is your need? What is the need of the church? Ask God to do “more than you can ask or imagine.” Then, I’m waiting to hear the tes-timonies of how God answers these requests. Artie Johnson

This summer the music ministry has been blessed to have a refurbishment project completed. The handbell rehearsal room was painted and new carpet and blinds installed. In addition, new carpet was installed in the music office. These pro-jects were made possible by special donations to the music ministry. On Wednesday, August 7th the chancel choir will resume their regular re-hearsal schedule at 6:30pm. Later, on August 21st the handbell choir will resume their regular rehearsal schedule on Wednesdays at 5:30pm. Please speak with Rob-ert about ministry opportunities for you in the chancel and handbell choirs. The worship services of our church are greatly enhanced by these groups praising God through His gift of music. As the body of Christ, our church gives wit-ness of Him through its various ministries. Sunday morning worship is one in which we can all participate. Let us keep in mind when we gather to worship Psalm 29:2 , Ascribe to the Lord the glory of his name; worship the Lord in holy splendor.

Speaking of Stewardship………

Jesus said:

“Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the king-

dom. Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not

wear out, a treasure in heaven that will not be exhausted, where no thief comes near and no

moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Luke 32-34

The God Who Gives to Man Blesses the Man Who Gives to Him

How and what shall I give this year to and through my church?

IF I GIVE NOTHING: I cast a ballot in favor of closing my church and I discourage others.

IF I GIVE LESS THAN LAST YEAR: I show my disapproval of the work that has been done. I favor

curtailment of the work at home and abroad.

IF I GIVE GRUDGINGLY AND OF NECESSITY: I shall find no joy in my giving. I shall not receive

the Lord’s richest blessing; for it is written that the Lord loves a cheerful giver.

IF I REFUSE TO MAKE A GENEROUS PLEDGE: I make it difficult for my church to make plans for

the year.

IF I GIVE LESS THAN ONE-TENTH OF MY INCOME: I do less than that which was required of the

Jews before Christ.

IF I GIVE PROPORTIONATELY: I shall be blessed in my giving, whether the gift be large or small.

“For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath and not according

to that he hath not.” I shall probably increase my pledge this year; I know the cause of the church

increases. I must ask myself whether or not my giving to the church is in proportion to my in-

come and my self.

IF I GIVE SYSTEMATICALLY: I make it possible for my church to plan in advance. I make it easier

on myself, for I know from experience that the accumulation of small obligations soon become

burdensome. How and What shall I give this year to and through my Church, Hope First United

Methodist?

Never Alone

READ Psalm 1:1-6

Keep straight the path of your feet, and all your ways will be sure.

At the beginning of the 8th grade, I played sports, had friends and a girlfriend, and made good grades. However, toward the end of the school year, my friends began venturing into behaviors that made me uncomfortable. Because of their new interests, I began spending less time with them. I went straight home after practice and stopped seeing them on week-ends. Even though they had been my closest friends, I had no desire to join them. I was hurt by the loss of my friendships and until the end of my 9th grade year my days were lonely. I went to school and to sports practice, studied, and slept. I had gone to church my whole life, but I had never yearned to know God more than I did during those two years. God was revealed to me more each day. In the evening, I loved going to church events where I learned about God and made new friends. I stopped hating my old friends and began praying for them. In those two years, God showed me that I was never alone. I didn’t have to conform to the world to find community; I just needed to open my eyes and sur-render to God.

Prayer: Dear God, we thank you for your mercy, love, and understanding. Thank you for comforting us in every circumstance. Amen From the Upper Room, July—August, 2019. The current Upper Room is available for everyone and can be picked up in the church.

It’s hard to believe it is already August and preschool will soon begin! We will

have our Open House the last week of August and school will begin on Tuesday,

Sept. 3rd at 8:00am. We are looking forward to seeing some of our kids returning

to FUMP and lots of sweet, new faces.

Our teachers are:
