Our Vision Students at DWD will graduate with a wide array of skills
and strong knowledge base in a culture of high expectations,
generosity, encouragement, and civility.
This spring students at Daniel and across the state will again have the
opportunity to display their skills, abilities, and knowledge on South
Carolina’s standardized assessments
for college and career readiness.
All third-year high school students (11th graders) will take the ACT on
February 28th or March 1st in order to evaluate their college readiness as
well as to enable teachers and parents
to better understand how prepared their students are for higher
education. These same students will also take the ACT WorkKeys between
March 22nd and March 24th in order to
help evaluate their level of career readiness.
Message from the Principal Mr. Josh Young
These tests, which are being given at
no cost to students or families, will show everyone where our students
are succeeding and where extra academic focus is needed. I know that
with your help and support our
students at Daniel will continue to perform at the highest standards
possible.
Please use the following link on the SC Department of Education website for
more detailed information on these
and other state assessments: http://ed.sc.gov/tests/high/

Did you know Daniel High School has a wonderful new addition? The Dan-
deLION opened up this past fall to serve our students confidentially with needs of
clothing, shoes, hygiene products, snacks, and school supplies.
The Military Ball and Prom are both approaching, and we would love to be
able to provide gowns, dress shoes (for both men and women), and other for-
mal wear for our students that are in
need at no charge in our “Prom Shop”. If you have any of these type of items to
donate, please bring them to the Guidance Office.
We also accept financial donations (payable to the Daniel Foundation) as well to use for specific DandeLION purchases. Please contact Maggie Bandy, [email protected], if you have any questions.

WorkKeys to be Administered to Juniors in March ACT WorkKeys is a job
skills assessment that measures real-world
skills. This assessment connects work skills, training, and skill testing for
educators and employers.
The testing program measures career
readiness by testing students in three areas: Reading for Information,
Applied Mathematics, and Locating Information. Students who
successfully complete these three tests
may be eligible for ACT’s National Career Readiness Certificate.
This is a great opportunity for our
students to take this test during the
school day at no expense. This year’s administration of WorkKeys will take place between March 22nd and March
24th. Juniors have been assigned a
testing date in advance.

Students were able to complete an actual gel electrophoresis lab in all Biology classes for the first
time this year due to a generous grant from the Daniel Foundation. Much of the equipment purchased can be
reused each year to better teach the newly expanded
standards on this technique that has relevance in the forensic science field.
Bringing CSE techniques to the
classroom gives students an additional opportunity to do
“real science” and complete a
lab that previously required assistance from outside organizations or could only be completed virtually.

This year 44 AP Environmental students collected water quality data, analyzed

AP Environmental Science students present research at college-level symposium
Second Place: An Acidic Environment’s Effect on Creek Health by Chris Aurich,
Spencer Dickey, Manav Jain, and Juan Salcido-Bravo.
Special thanks to Clemson University
graduate student mentors, Erica Linard,
and Lauren Garcia for organizing the WOW program this year!
On February 22, the AFJROTC “Flying
Lions” Cadet Corps earned the highest possible score on their Unit Evaluation.
Every Air Force Junior ROTC Unit is evaluated once every three years by
Headquarters Inspectors to verify the
program is operating in accordance with Federal law, Air Force regulations, and
School District policies.
Because the evaluation only happens once every three years, by necessity it is
a very thorough and all-inclusive
inspection. Every area of program operation was placed under a full day of
scrutiny. Thanks to months of preparation by instructors and cadet
leaders and strong “buy-in” from the
Cadet Corps, the top score was earned.
Of 27 units this Evaluator team has inspected so far this year, the Flying
Lions were only the 4th group to earn
the highest score. Evaluators identified several aspects of Daniel’s AFJROTC
program as the best they had seen to date in the entire Region.
Major Childress, Chief Preisch, and the
entire Cadet Corps want to thank the
entire Daniel Family for all the outstanding support and assistance
along the way. It was truly a #OneDaniel success story. Go Lions!
Congratulations Chess Club
Congratulations to our
chess team on winning second place in this year’s

year for this amazing group
of students.
AFJROTC Earns Highest Possible Score on Unit Daniel’s Interact Club completed two service projects including our
monthly Clemson Child Development Center day on
February 3. Twelve Interact
members created bulletin boards and spent time with the children on
the playground.
The second event was a Valentine’s
Day party at Clemson Downs. Students made cards, talked and
listened to residents, and shared cookies.
